Hair roots

Is there an easy, lightweight way to get realistic looking dark roots on light hair? 

In one picture, I doubled up on the Short Cropped Hair by Redzstudio, with a dark shorter version and a longer light version.  In the other I used the same dark base again and Redz' The Business Hair is the light one.  It's what I'm looking for, and it's kind of easy, but it's hella heavy.

    If it’s UV mapped use a texture with dark roots

    Make the dark root much, much glossier than you are doing as they will be much more oily then further out on the hair shaft.

    Aren't there some hair shaders that have color masks for roots?
