Studio not seeing Titan on Mac - help please

I've got three 3,1 macs, two with GTX 780 cards (that seem to work fine and are recognized) and the main box has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN Black but is not showing up in the render settings as a choice. The Titan shows up in the Simulation settings though. I'm not sure what is different besides the card which was previously one of the 780s and worked fine.

The mac is running 10.11.6, Nvidia driver is running and as up to date as they can get on this OS and box. Not really sure what would be different.
Would it be the version of DAZ?

I basically use the other boxes as support render machines, for example, one box renders out frames 1-30, next renders out 31-60 and/or the main one renders out frames 61-90.

Any help would be great. Worst case scenario is that I can move cards round again. I just have some projects to crank out and could benefit from the faster card. Thanks in advance.

What version of MacOS are you running?I assume not the newest or you couldn't have installed an Nvidia driver at all.

Have you checked the Nvidia control panel to make sure the card is set to be used by DS?

The mac is running OS 10.11.6.

Where is the Nvidia control panel? Is there a setting in Studio? That might just be a Windows thing. The Mac system preferences don't really allow a lot of options.
I did try downgrading the cuda panel but everything stayed the same so I re-upgraded it.

    Thanks, Ken!

System Preferences on your Mac; look for Nvidia and CUDA

Thank you, Nemesis. I don't think there is an Nvidia control panel like on a Windows machine.
I've already explored the Mac Cuda and Nvidia panels. That was one of the ones I re-upgraded. The only thing I could really edit was checking the double-precision box and that made no difference.

It just doesn't make sense to me that an Nvidia card won't be recognized in the render settings panel but still be available in the Simulation settings panel.
    That's a very disappointing purchase.

Could it be the version of Studio that I'm running?

  • CitizenMCitizenM Posts: 39

    I've included three images.

The one with the checkboxes checked is using the GTX 780, Mac OS 10.11.6, Daz Studio 4.8.0.59 - Works fine.

The one without checkboxes to check is the GTX Titan Black, Mac OS 10.11.6, Daz Studio 4.11.0.383

The third image is the Titan being recognized in the Simulation settings. Ugh.

I don't know enough to really diagnose the issue or what I'm missing.

Simulation uses OpenCL, not CUDA, so it is genrally easier to access (even AMD cards can be used). Isn't the Titan Black fairly old - it's possible that its family of chips is no longer supported.

    Thanks, Richard!

My 780 and Titan are both fairly old.  The 780, which works fine, is from Q2 2013 and the Titan is actually a bit newer from Q1 2014.  So close in age, I had thought this would be a seamless transition.
I'm frustrated about it seeing it on one and not the other. You know it's there, computer - use it!

Looks like I'll likely just swap the cards to get back to work.

Yes, it seems to be a Kepler card so it should be supported.

    Yes, there is.

Are you using old Mac Pro's or external enclosures for each?

  • CitizenMCitizenM Posts: 39

They are each in a 3,1 Mac Pro. Nothing external. Studio sees the Titan but just not for the Cuda rendering.

The cheese graters are over 10 years old. Your best bet is to do a clean install of everything you can and see if that fixes the problem.

So I zipped up the Daz Studio 4.11 version and pulled over the Daz Studio 4.8 version from the other machine. It sees the Titan Black under the render settings panel. So that's good. It is taking a while to upload the runtime so I haven't been able to test it out yet. If I'm not using D-force, which I really haven't been able to anyways, this should work for what I need right now.

Still would rather be able to use the latest version if there are any other solutions out there, please don't hesitate to offer them.

Thank you, everyone, for considering my dilemma.

So Daz Studio 4.8, while it sees my Titan and can render with it*, it doesn't seem to be able to connect with my networked runtime. Just beachballs. So I reinstalled 4.11, a fresh download, and it still cannot see the Titan. So I can't do anything with either version. Just wasting time and money. I put a ticket to Daz but haven't heard back yet. Very frustrating. Sometimes this can be fun.

*Very quick too. A bit more than I was used to with the 780s. It was almost successful.

Pull the Titan and switch the computer it is in. See if its detected on another machine. There could be a hardware problem.

So I've got the Titan showing up in Daz Studio 4.10 on two of the machines including my main one (although it didn't earlier, so something seems to just be fickle.) Been moving cards around as Ken suggested.
I'm going to stop there for now and attempt to do some work from there. These machines may be reaching their lifespan but still, need to get a few months out of them.

    Thanks again, everyone.

Still nothing back from the helpdesk.

If those cheesegraters have been in use steadily since 2009ish then it is no surprise that they are starting to get flaky.
