Grass for iRay

I have just gotten back into using iRay for many a reason after keeping clear of it for again many a reason, and have come up against an issue.. For a while now I have been using https://www.daz3d.com/grass-shader-for-daz-studio which is really good for 3DL for doing great swathes or grass, but unfortunately it does not work as intended under iRay.. I was wondering if there was something similar for iRay or am I out of luck?  As so far all I am finding is just grass models which for what I want to do would take a lot of fiddling around.. :(

There is a great FREE Iray 3D grass system (and more) at Erock3D.

..thanks. I know there are grass shaders for Iray useable in other programmes.  Finally one we can use.

Cool thank you for that, as it is hard to find something that can do lots of grass quickly for iRay, a shame the product I link does not have an iRay version and can only gather that it is a limitation of iRay in Daz Studio..

The Erock grass is not a shader. It has props and materials. It works well for me. It is fun to mix in the free Erock dandelions, too.

It's very good yes, I gave it a try when you linked to it in another tread a while ago. Here's a couple of test renders I did, AFAIR I put 3 layers on top of each other to get it that dense, though.

Eek, the jpgs looked terrible because of forum recompression, so I've replaced them with the original pngs.

I like this, although it takes some getting used to; not had much use for it yet mind-you. I am working on one atm.

... It does, however, have the worst name ever for a dforce grass system. :D

The products should have some kind of short description telling what it actually is (like "grass object" in this case), it's often impossible to figure out what type of product it is from the the product name alone.

Something like that yes, would only take the vendor a few seconds to add.

I created a new library for the strand-based products, so I'm constantly reminded I have it as it is in the props, which is all that exists other than Animals and People. Not used Oso's cat yet; it's on the list). Makes it easier to find these new products.

I have about everthing from MartinJFrost. Here's a couple.

    https://www.daz3d.com/long-grass--essential-grassland-flowers-and-plants
    https://www.daz3d.com/the-imperfect-lawn--essential-grassland-flowers-and-plants

https://www.daz3d.com/g3d-da-grass-and-plant-pack  (Design Anvil - have to convert this to iray)

These products place clumps and you have to do them by hand, so you could add instancing. There's a couple for sale here. Not cheap.
There is instancing in DS, but it's tedious.

I used G3D-DA Grass for this, and it was tedious, though worth it ultimately. But I'm excited about the Erock3D Grass. Thanks, barbult!

Nice image. Erock grass should work easily on those rectangular plots of grass.

I think I have found a good compromise, in Ultrascatter Pro in that it can limit seeding to certain areas, trying it out now and see how I go.. :)

The worldbuilder reminds me somewhat of ecosystems in Vue from back in the day.Just add your atmo and voila (well, almost). I would like to get the Ultrascatter Pro, but I'm out of pennies. They also have an update for it (more pennies).

I downloade the one from eRock 3D Grass and am trying to find time to give it a go. Thx!

    Great, thanks for the link.

  • I had this same problem with Unreal Engine.  And it persists...  whenever I ask about grass, I get a wall of meadows.  That's nice, but what I actually want is cut grass, you know actual lawn grass (that doesn't look too tiled), for archviz and similar, not some overgrown patch from a meth addict's front garden.

    Is there anything?

    Cut grass.

You are going to find, that the products sold here are made for Daz Studio and can be exported and used in Unreal, not made for Unreal or associated programs like for archviz. For something like this, you are probably better off looking at a store that makes and sells products specifically for Unreal or Unity.

No, I meant in general across 3D it's not easy to find something like this.  Apparently nobody wants to sell it to me, Unreal or Daz.

Ah, renderosity links never work for me but found it anyway.  It's not bad is it.   Hmmmmmm.

You have to reload the pages, they never work straight from the link.

  • I bought it.  Going to play with it for a bit.  May post a picture...

I'm glad to hear im not the only one having trouble with Renderosity. For a decent stretch, even attempting to open something from their main page would lead to never ending failure to load.

  • Bah.  It's not like fibremesh and shaders or anything like that.  Not really very good at all.  Waste of a tenner.

  • richardandtracyrichardandtracy Posts: 7,135
No, it isn't shaders and it seems to be actual models of grass sprinkled over the areas. Can I ask: What you you were hoping for? On the face of it, the Flinks system seems to be pretty similar to what you were looking for, it'd be nice to know why it's not right. Regards, Richard.
