Hair that looks nice without opacity maps (or doesn't use any): Recommendations?
As the title says, I'm looking for hairstyles (for G8 in particular, though just about anything adapts well to it with enough elbow grease) that aren't overly reliant on transparency/cutout maps.
Essentially, the kind of hair you can change the surfaces of to stone and stick on a statue. (Because that's exactly my intent, haha.) Applying the ordinary cutout maps doesn't always herald the best results and doesn't help with the depth. (Plus, with how UVs work on them sometimes, the textures don't look convincing so I utilize an Iray Decal which makes me unable to use Cutout...)
Will compile a list in this post and add to it as the suggestions roll in. :D It's not exactly something you can easily search for, so any help on the matter would be most appreciated!
- Toon Generations Hair
- All the "Anime" hair styles for G8F
- OOT's "Stylized" hairstyles for G3F
- Star Hair (kinda)
- D4M Hairs for G3F - Charity, Faith, Mercy (particulalry medium and lores)
Also, any tips for adding true solid depth to said hair would be most appreciated - I've been mostly finagling with using the cutout maps as displacement with high SubD...to some limited success. Can't seem to get them to look softer even after changing how the SubD stuff works (e.g. increasing the levels and changing the softening technique to also include edges.)
Thanks!

Strand based hair, new for 4.11 seems to give great depth and body. It takes some getting used to, and can be tough on resources, but I do like it.
Ooh, great call! A friend recommended the D4M hairs (particularly the medium and lo-res versions) a couple of months ago and I forgot about them! Adding now.
Also a good idea! Though I don't like how, I guess, thin the strands are; is there a way to make the hairs themselves thicker? Really helps to sell that "solid mass" feel, and going through the surfaces tab was an exercise in confusion.
