Paypal refused my payment for Gumdrop!

WilmapWilmap Posts: 2,917

Paypal has just refused my payment for Gumdrop - Candy Base and Patchwork Guard for Gumdrop.

They say

" Unfortunately, this transaction has been declined after we found a risk associated with your payment. We are therefore not able to complete this particular transaction."

What on earth is wrong with it? I just don't understand their reasoning.

I'm not sure what is going on with PayPal but a simple workaround would be to buy a gift certificate using PayPal and use that to buy the items.

ETA: since Gift cards are currently discounted your net cost would also be less this way.

Maybe "Candy Base" frightened the algorithm? You could contact Daz, or Pay Pal even.

The AI probably confused gum-drop and gun-drop.  surprise

Well I am very annoyed.  It was only a small amount to pay too. Perhaps they should investigate further into the items we are buying before cancelling the order.

That's very weird. And doesn't seem like it should be legal. It's your money, you should be able to spend it on whatever you want (as long as it's not something illegal).

Are there any discrepancies in your account or payment details that could trigger a red flag on their end? E.g. if you're using a UK email address but your payment is through a US bank? Sometimes the anti-fraud code can produce false positives.

Ultimately, contacting PayPal to find out what's going on would probably be best.

P.S. Thanks for all the wonderful work you do! yes

I wonder has PayPal increased the sensitivity of their alert system or has Daz been flagged on it in some way. I currently have an order 'pending' because PayPal has apparently flagged it for review. This is the message they sent me:

    Dear xxx,

    Your payment is temporarily pending.

After an initial review, we found that your payment may not be in agreement with our Acceptable Use Policy. Because of this, we need to put this payment on hold until we can make sure it meets our requirements.

Login to your account for details.

You don't need to do anything now. We'll contact you within 72 hours with the outcome of our review. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

For more information, see goods or services regulations.
    Best regards,
    Your PayPal team.

I was only buying four hairs (Talisken, Portia, Rievel 2 and Havana) and Stonemason's Streets of Old London so I don't know what would have triggered the alert for potential non-compliance with the Acceptable Use Policy. I've made dozens of payments to Daz via PayPal previously, and a couple more since, without issues.

Actually, just thinking - I wonder whether it was the Havana hair that prompted the review. It wasn't on my radar because I'm in Europe rather than the USA, but am I right in thinking there's a USA-Cuba trade embargo? Funny if that's what caused it to be flagged! smiley

    Wilmap is in the UK

And I'm in Europe too. (The Havana hair was in my order rather than Wilmap's.) But it's the only thing I can see in my order that could have raised a flag - e.g. if PayPal is trying to ensure they don't facilitate US-Cuba trading, and in an order for a US company (Daz) there was a keyword that suggested a Cuban connection.

Wilmap's order - I can't see what could have been the trigger unless there's some drug-related slang I'm not seeing - e.g. 'candy base' as Richard suggested.

  • A belated reply, but for anyone else who comes searching.. I got dinged by PayPal in the same way, with the Havana hair being one of the things I tried to order. That's gotta be the problem.

According to the Urban Dictionary, Gumdrop can refer to a psychedelic drug similar to mushrooms. Maybe that's what flagged it.
