If you use Install Manager you can have a release and a beta version installed at the same time. I don't think there is any supported way to have two release verions installed at the same time.
I've currently got 4.10 release and 4.11 beta installed. You can probably still get the 4.11 beta if you want to try it while keeping 4.10. You have to "buy" it through the store but you don't have to pay any money for it.
If you install Daz Studio through Install Manager then whenever there is an update Install Manager will tell you and give you the option to install it.
If you don't want to use Install Maqnager you can download the installer from your product library and run it, but this will overwrite your 4.10 installation.
Cool. Thanks for the theory ManFriday. I figured that maybe it was because the process was being accelerated. Ive also obderved that both launching and quiting iray is much, much faster than it was in 4.10.
Lol. I kind of wish Device Manager would just give me a message that says something like, "Mmmmm, could be...?" as opposed to lying to me and telling me that everything is in the clear.
I didnt even know that such a thing existed. Thanks, ill check it out.
Pfffft. You can have as many different release versions as you want. But you need to do the driving yourself.
The new version will only overwrite the old one if the old one is where the installer wants to put the new one.
Mind you, I install everything manually so if I mess something up, I know who to blame. But in this case, once I figured it out it was pretty simple. Note: I'm on a Mac, so things may be named differently in Windows or other OSes.
Make sure that your old version is in a folder that says what version it is. Drag the old version's program folder out of the Application folder, and put it in the Trash. Don't uninstall it. Just drag the whole folder into the Trash, and don't empty the Trash. The Trash is a shielded folder, installers can't find anything in there to mess with it.
Install the new version. Label the folder with a name that says what version it is.
Open the Trash, and drag the old version's program folder out and put it back in the Applications folder. Voila! Two different release versions.
On a Mac, put the icons in the Dock to launch them. It's up to you to remember which is which because they look just alike. I'm assuming that Windows has some kind of equivalent arrangement to the Dock.
You may or may not need to redirect the content manager to where your content lives. I found tht the new copy of 4.11 had copied the settings of where my content libraries are from the information in my user's files.
Eventually I'm going to need to reninstall my 3rd-party plugins, but I'll wait on that until any necessary updates have been posted. After all, I still have those installed in my copy of 4.10.
The Iray Preview problem is still an issue. My laptop, Nvidia 960m, works with 4.11 just fine - in fact it is surprisingly fast. However, my desktop, Nvidia M6000, does not show an iray preview no matter how long I wait with 4.11 - it is giving a black screen upon rendering as well. I updated the drivers and am attempting other suggestions listed above - but nothing has worked so far.
@JOdel: oh wow, super useful to know! Thanks!
Richard Haseltine :
Thank you, Richard, for your help with the .daz to .duf issue. Re-installing 4.5 worked perfectly, and I am even transferring DS3 .daz scenes to updated .duf for use in DS4.x (had to coax the 'data' folder outside of 'content' folder to make work).
Thanks again!
So can we use 4.5 togetther with 4.11 ? Don't they conflict ?
I'm not sure about 4.5 as I've never installed it, but I currently have three versions installed, including the beta: 4.9 release, 4.10 release, and 4.11 beta. I used the directions @JOdel provided just six posts up to add 4.10 a couple weeks ago, (the day after JOdel posted the how to!)
Daz Studio stores important information necessary to run the program in your Users appData, (for Windows, don't know about Macs,) and that information is shared by all the installed release versions as the paths are the same. If you change something in one, such as adding a custom action, it will be there in the other(s). The beta has a separate location for the same information. Changing anything in beta, such as adding a custom action, will have no effect on the release versions. and vice-versa.
I will just qualify mine -- I did not install 4.5 alongside 4.11, or any other DS version. I re-installed on an old XP laptop where it once resided where most of my original .daz scene files are.
I was up to 4.9 on that laptop for cloth sim usage with VWD, and NPR usage with LR9K (LineRender 9000).
I wouldn't try to mix those two, or 4.5 with any latest version due to the fact that 4.5 is using the old Valentina CMS, while the new versions use PostgreSQL CMS.
I knew this going into the re-install, and I deleted both DS4.9 and the PostgreSQL CMS for a clean install of 4.5 that auto-installs Valentina CMS -- I am even using my old batch script which started/stopped DS4.5 with Valentina, otherwise Valentina CMS is an 'always on' CMS whether you are running DS or not.
Maybe 4.5 can work with PostgreSQL, but I do not know, have not tried, and probably won't be trying. I will be trying JOdel's trick though with 4.9 (installed - different system) and 4.11 -- Thank you, JOdel!
Thoughts, Richard?...
EDIT: Bad proofreading...
Thank you @DaremoK3 and @L'Adair .. I'm not sure the @JOdel trick is safe, what about the registry ? Well I guess if I'll need to convert some old daz files then I'll get 4.5 on a vm that seems the easier way to me.
I think there is a bug in 4.11. If I delete a figure, DAZ freezes.
When it 1st came out, I tried it on my 1070 laptop iray preview was all blurry & had the mouse jump issue went back to 10. Last week I tried it on my 10 core 1080TI beast had the mouse jump but the preview was working. I had a crash while saving a render after that the preview was bugered up again and had issues like undo would skip steps. I went back to 10 until 11 becomes more stable. It did not render any faster. I think it may have been slower in my case..
That sounds as if you have some other issue, I haven't seen any other reports like that (and 4.11 is unlikely to change - the Public Builds are already 4.12.0.x).
Render speed did slow, due to fixing an issue with normals that requires more checking I believe.
I had that happen in 4.10, so probably not new. Saving a scene subset saved me a ton of grief.
