Difference between IDG Iray Essentials and DA Horse 2 Iray Material Presets?

I recently picked up the Daz Horse 2 Pro bundle, and I was trying to figure out what key differences there are between two Iray products for the Daz Horse 2:

IDG Iray Essentials - Daz Horse 2 and Centaur 7

DA Horse 2 Iray Material Presets

Are they both meant for making the horses look better in Iray (but with IDG IRay Essentials also having options for centaurs)?

Is there a key difference I'm missing?

If they're mostly the same, which do you prefer using?

I use both, and they both look good (for non LAMH products). However, IDG Essentials offers a lot more options for Horse 2, with the added benefit of working easily with Centaurs, so if you had to chose one, then Essentials would be my choice.

The Iray Material Presets does offer a "Course and Furry" option, which Essentials does not. This looks slightly more realistic in close up than Essentials.

    I hope that helps. (Frank)

Ah, I see. Yes, that does help. So if I want a more realistic close-up the Iray Material Presets would be good, but IDG Essentials offers more options. Cool. I shall keep that in mind while deciding between the two. (Eventually I'd like to get both, but need to stick with one or the other while on a budget, unless they both have a really good sale).

    Thanks!

Most importantly, none of the two will give you additional fur colours, but use the coats from the DAZ Horse 2 Pro set.

The DA set has a bump&normal map, while the IDG one has only extra bump maps. The rest is really preference, IMO.

Noted. Thanks for the additional clarification. :-)

I've gone ahead and picked up IDG IRay Essentials since it worked well with today's sales. But if it's not quite doing what I want for close-ups, then I'll definitely be looking into testing out the DA Materials Preset one if it goes on sale. Was leaning toward that one except that the other reached my current budget first.

In the meantime, I now have a render running to test the difference between the original shaders with the IRay Uber shader applied versus the IDG shaders.

    Thank you both!

I thought the IDG product looked good in close ups. I didn't feel a normal map was needed because I didn't see any significantly noticeable difference in test renders with having a bump and normal versus just a bump.

Anyway, shout if you have issues.

Thus far I've been happy with how the IDG one looks, though I haven't had a chance to do much work with close-ups yet. But I'm looking forward to doing more testing with it. :-)
