These people do not exist. Why websites are churning out fake images of people (and cats)

Check out the images. They are pretty incredible!

    These so called AIs are just programs that combine two images together, the algorithm behind can identify a set of "landscape" or in this case facescape markers and calculates them to make a new images from them. The algorithm was first developed and published by NVDIA, others followed. The segment wich is titled AI is the part where the program is supposed in the same go to  identify which images are fake and from real images, and in the next iteration include the aspects by which the image was identyfied to the next markers.

    Wht these algoriths can't do is work creative, they are still doing only what they are programmed to to. there might be a chance factor how much one maker will be weighted from one original image to the other but its still not a creative process. 

    So no its not and it's certainly not better

    It looked more realistic to me but it’s unclear whether these are based off real photos and if they are, they would need to get the rights unless they are using paid stock photos. Of course we can do a lot more, but for a simple realistic face closeup, I think they have 99% of us beat for realism and theirs is done in seconds!

    I agree they look more real. If they are combining a lot of faces and the final does not look like any of the sources, then I don’t think they have to stick to stock photos.

    @Wonderland, yes the article from the link is unclear about the sources, I read up on the topic some days ago (unfortunately I don't remember where, else I would post the link) anyway, they explained in more depth what is done and how it works, and they didn't cut out all the areas where it didn't work all that good. If you click on this link https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/ you get a new "fake person" every time and you can see that it sometimes doesn't work all that well, has diffuse areas etc (they posted links to the way the algorithm works on the site so you can follow that up) .

    Sure the realism of it is stunning but I think to say they beat the artists here is comparing apples to bananas ;)

    Yeah, I'm not doing basic smiling faces and nothing elses, with no ability to pose or change lighting or clothing or hair...

    It's neat, sure.

    Indeed a neat trick,
    However I will be more impressed by" AI's "when they can formulate
    engaging& inspiring original animated films, 
    like this one by three french Canadians
    using the discontinued Autodesk Softimage software.

    ...and it doesn't necessarily have to be photos either. What about digital characters, like those created by Pixar, Dreamworks, ILM or even us? 

    While doing research for my Merida project, I came across some "provocative" manipulations (not 3D recreations) of Pixar characters (most notably Elsa, Emma, and Rapunzel) on DA that look as if the they were ripped right from the films.  Not sure what software was used.

    The images are basically robot Photoshop jobs. I read the how its made and the AI takes the lowest resolution details and works its way up, adding new parts of different photos at higher resolutions that might fit. Then a second AI judges if the result is real or fake, and the ones that get judged as real get posted on the website.

    It also states the original AI used photos of celebrities as its sources. It doesn't say where the newer database comes from, but the features the fake people have are indeed based on source photos of a real person.

    So called deep fakes will certainly become a real problem someday. They will be able to make anybody appear to be in photos or videos they may not want to be in. Any famous person could be an obvious target, but with so many people posting photos on social media it is possible to do that with anyone who has pictures online.

    For some reason I would really like to see an AI version of those Conan O'Brien "What if they mated?" segments. (Which has actually existed already for some time.) But I want one that intentionally makes the resulting baby look somewhat comically terrifying like the show did. Now train an AI to do that...comedy.

    Yes, creativity is based on emotion, desire, and imagination, human properties which AI systems don't posess and probably never will. Therefore, unlike humans, they don't have any motivation for doing anything on their own.

    The apparent motivation behind what these systems are doing just reflect the mind of the programmers and what they design them to do. They're just extensions of the human mind, and they are in fact far inferior to the full capacities of the human mind. These capacities are demonstrated by autists who can have different unusual abilities like being able to solve extremely complex mathematical problems faster than a computer, or reproducing a piece of music on a piano perfectly after having heard it only one time, and things like that. The human mind is really an incredible thing, and we'll never be able to create anything that's superior to it for you can't create anything that you can't imagine or understand.

    Imagine the chaos if someone made a fake missing person poster of one of these and starting posting them all over in a small town. of course once "they" caught up to you, you would be good as smollett.

    Deep Fakes are scary stuff.  The long term consequences haven't even started to show yet.
