Before you update to Nvidia Driver 418.19

SotoSoto Posts: 1,450

Just a warning that it is messing DAZ Studio big time for me. It renders SLOW (like CPU slow), chokes my PC every 10 seconds and Post Denoiser simply won´t work. I had to roll back and now everything works great again.

Just a friendly warning from my experience here. Not sure if it was discussed somewhere, tried to search but saw nothing.

There's a recent thread about this issue a page or so back.

Why I am using the WHQL ones that come via Windows 10 Update, currently they are the 399.24 drivers..

  • I’m still using a driver from May of last year because of some the newer drivers mess with DS. I don’t game so I don’t need the gaming experience part of a driver but I’ I’m one for if it ain’t broke don’t mess with it.

  • 417.71 seems safe.

There is a new driver available for me this AM!  Version 419.17! Release date 02/22/2019

  • Does that 419.17 fix the problems?

Yes. I just downloaded the driver and tested it in Daz 4.11.0.236 (beta) with 2080ti.

Very interesting topic, reason being.  I had Nvidia v388.18, approx two weeks ago, W10 update, afterwards my renders were very slow, some scenes didn't render at all, froze for 10 minutes or longer.  I download Nvidia v418, restart computer, render back to normal.  Then I see this, I'm thinking Huh ?  Then I recieve update notification for Nvidia v419 this afternoon, installed, all is well.  Happy to see this thread incase I had issues pirior to v419 release.  Enjoy new drivers everyone smiley

    Yep it's working for me.

I installed today's updated driver and it works fine for me. I have a GTX 1080 and an RTX 2080. Everything seems to be faster including navigating the viewport preview (NVIDIA Iray) mode.

I thought you were a Mac user not a PC ?

Yeah I have just installed the 419.17 drivers, also a mobo bios upgrade (very nervous with that one) and well so far so good..

  • Since everyone seems not to be having issues with this driver and the benefits it seems to be giving to many I may update to this driver yes me mr. "if ain't broken don't fix it". However, it seems that one problem I have with Win 10 is that it wants to default to the older driver version. I delete the older drive,r restart the PC and install the update but it seems like, at least to me, that Win 10 has defaulted to the version I had installed 397.93. IS this a windows update thing?

Just a side note I'm always a bit paranoid about updating drivers because of all the issues they may cause.

    Thanks!

How was the previous version installed? Do you install a package from NVIDIA (standard version) or from Microsoft Store (DCH version)? Apparently you can't install one over the other without completely uninstalling the existing drivers. You can check on the NVIDIA control panel, System Information. The second entry is Driver Type: Standard or DCH. You can get the DCH version from NVIDIA, also.

I've got a 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (Gigabyte) Installed new driver today, restarted the computer, opend DS, switched from texture shaded to Iray and my computer Blue Screened. Should I open my own thread?

I just opend DS and tried again and didn't get the blue screen but everything seems slower. I've never checked before but due to the speed I had before I would assume it was rendering off the card in the past. I just did a test, CPU at 100% All I have in the scene is single low poly hat with shaders and two lights. DS is forcing the CPU to render. I'm thinking I have it set correctly to render from the card. This is probably user error, any help from anyone is appreciated.

That setting looks okay, and the scene is trivial in size, so the GPU driver might be failing.

Try to catch the first lines of the status box (when it starts rendering you have a few seconds to click at the start of the messages, or click and drag upwards until the top, quickly copy, and paste into notepad or something), or stop the render and open the Studio log file (menu -> Help -> Troubleshooting -> View Log File) and go to the end of the file.

In either case, there will be some lines like this if it works properly

    Rendering in NVIDIA Iray
    Compiling Shaders - 0/1
    Rendering image
    Rendering...
Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.3   IRAY   rend progr: CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1080): Processing scene...
    Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.10  IRAY   rend stat : Geometry memory consumption: 4.20454 MiB (device 0), 0 B (host)
Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.10  IRAY   rend stat : Texture memory consumption: 151.251 MiB (device 0)
    Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.10  IRAY   rend stat : Lights memory consumption: 196 B (device 0)
Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.10  IRAY   rend stat : Material measurement memory consumption: 0 B (GPU)
Iray VERBOSE - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.10  IRAY   rend stat : Materials memory consumption: 59.3867 KiB (GPU)
    Iray Iteration: 1
    Iray Iteration: 2
    Iray Iteration: 3
    Iray Iteration: 4
Iray :Render target canvas was written.
    ...
    etc.

If it does not load properly, the log will show error messages instead.

What version of driver are you using? There was an update yesterday to 419.17 which was supposed to fix things, but I am not 100% sure if all 9x0 series cards are covered.

  • It installed fine I don’t know what I was seeing at first I always get my updates from Nivida. So all is well everything is working as it should.

  • I just turned the computer back on, loaded a simple cube, rendered fine, rendered from the card. Loaded a character with hair and complete outfit and lighting, rendered just fine from the card. Hopefully it's all okay now. Rendered quick too, faster than usual. 512 x 1024 image rendered in 12 minutes 33 seconds.

I suspect it will be fine; I was experiencing issues where it did some renders, but not others and it seems to have been fixed by restarting.

Yeah, everything seems fine with the new driver :D

I thought you were a Mac user not a PC ?

Both. I work on the Mac while the PC renders.

I haven't updated yet so are they both failing ?

Always reboot after installing a new GPU driver.

Not meaning to go too far off topic, but do you have any advice on what Nvidia web driver and CUDA driver version work best on Mac OS 10.13.4 (High Sierra), @Hellboy? I can render in DS fine - maybe a bit slower than it should be - but trying to use dforce causes DS to crash. I think it may be a driver problem, since I could use dforce (though it was painfully slow) before updating my system from Sierra to High Sierra and installing new drivers. Right now I have CUDA Driver Version 410.130 and NVIDIA Web Driver 387.10.10.10.30.106, which the driver manager claims is up to date.

dforce is openCL not CUDA so it'sdefinitely not a CUDA driver issue.

Exactly !!  Noticed after Win10 update, Daz would start acting up, Iray preview would freeze up, renders were slow, some scenes didn't render at all etc....  Thought I had Nvidia updates, but when I checked I had v388, Win10 must have messed someting up.

I only have an Nvidia graphics card on the PC, so all I know is the previous driver was a mess but the current one works like a charm!
