A problem when parenting props

PetraPetra Posts: 1,157

Up until tonight, I could always parent props with no problem.

Tonight I worked with some cubes which have letters on them, I was arranging them side by side to spell a word with them.

After arranging them I wanted to parent all cubes to the first cube to be able to resize and move them all together.

What happens now is, when I parent the second cube to the first one, it just disappears into the first cube and I can not move it out and away from the first cube.

This never happened before.

I would appreciate any help :(

When you select the parent there should be a check box for parent in place. See if that changes anything when checked or unchecked.

If all else fails, create a new primitive plane and parent all the letters to it and then just turn down the opacity.

Or create a new 'group' (which links all the items in it - like parenting to a null) from all the items.

I agree with Silent Water. I seldom parent things these days... grouping is much easier and less problematic.

How do you do, parenting to a null from all items?

Select the items in the scene pane first, then create the Null (or Group). In the create dialog, you'll see an option to parent in place. Check that and the selected items will be parented. Of course, you can always drag more items later, or remove them from the Null.

Be careful lately I've found if I position items where I want them and then create a NULL and parent the items to the NULL they all pile in a lump to the NULL then I have to go to the scene tab and click on each item to move it back to where I want it to be , So either create your NULL and parent the items to it first then pose/position them or try grouping instead

That sounds like having Parent In Place off.

^This - you can use the icon to 'Create Group' (on my layout  it's next to the create primitive icon, in the menu bar), or you can go to the top menu (File|Edit|Create|...|) click on 'Create' and select 'New Group' from the drop-down menu there - then you can rename the group to something useful in your scene :)

  • Parent In Place is also in the Scene pane option menu - the lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab.
