My Daz Content library only uses 87 gigabytes of my 500 gigabyte C drive

I Dont expect it to grow much going forward

since I make all of my  new content on per project basis.

One thing I wish I could tell anyone starting out with 3D content is to make sure to have a separate library set up JUST for the freebies and another JUST for the purchased content. You'd be shocked how often freebies break other content when they've been set up, saved, and distributed incorrectly -which happens quite frequently. Also, a lot of freebies have restrictions that paid content doesn't. So when I set up a scene for a promo image I have to be very careful about which products I use and be careful not to include any freebie content that might have usage restrictions.

Having the freebies in their own library would have been a massive time saver for me. Now I'm pretty much stuck with no way, that I know of, to separate them out from the paid products.

You know what I'm going to this right?  lol...Its the only way I can find anything.

And I'm a wee bit embarassed by the size of my library now....

How are you doing that? Just trying to remember what things are freebies and what aren't, and then moving them manually?

Its easy enought to set up a category for freebies if you want to keep them separate.  Of course, finding them in the runtime cn be iffy but once you find them and put them where you want them, you don't have to think about it anymore. Just create a custom category and put the where it makes the most sense for you.

Divamakeup, I had to reinstall Daz due to a computer problem, so what I did was use DIM to uninstall EVERYTHING.  Once that was done, what was left in my content folders was only freebies (and Renderosity stuff, but I didn't have too much of that).  I then moved all of that to a new folder before I reinstalled my Daz stuff.  Viola, freebies and Daz content separated!

It was a rather extreme solution, but since I had to reinstall everything anyway, it worked out for me.

Ohhhhh Cool idea! Hmmmm I might have to try that. Does that mess with any custom categories?

I don't use custom categories, so I'm afraid I can't help you there.  Sorry!

Oh I see. Yeah, that I should have done from the start, as the freebies are mixed in with my other categories. I have freebie environments mixed with purchased environments in my custom Environments category, same with clothes, props, hair, weapons, etc. I should have kept freebies separated. I might be borked now. lol I'm not sure there is a way to fix that unless I start over with my custom categories. Which I might end up doing anyway since I've learned a lot since I set up the categories originally. Like if I had to redo it I'd probably separate content by type. Like Sci-Fi, Historical/Olden Times, Modern, Nature, Dark/Gothic. I think that would have been a big time saver. There's nothing like creating a futuristic sci-fi scene and wading through folder after folder of contemporary everyday stuff like tshirts, shorts, etc.

  • Never enough!

But pushing a couple of Tereabytes of DAZ only from the last not quite 4 years.

You can edit your custom categories pretty easily.  I  am always finding a slightly better way to do things.  You can also have things in multiple cateogories which is great for kit bashing. There is a move to option you can use as well, so you can easily move things to a different category.

my DiM downloads folder is holding 118GB of zip files from a period of around 12 years

probably would be a lot more if Daz3D had enough resources to keep their software updated to accept the latest figures and products from G3 upwards.

  • the real question is how much money did u guys spend? I've spent about $300 so far and I just started.

about 3-4 years ago, I was flabbergasted when i got my credit card statement at the end of the month and calculated my DAZ purchases for the month....over $900!  That did NOT include Rendo purchases.  I almost had a heart attack that day.

Let's just say that I could have bought a couple of very nice, brand new cars for the amount I've spent on digital content in the 14 years I've been doing 3D.  Fortunately, I've been able to write part of it off as a business expense for the last couple of years.

I exceeded that amount last year. Trying hard not to spend more on this hobby. Temptation everyday.

Um, well over $13K (US dollars)blush

Daz Studio is a great FREE program... right? devil

  • I started with Daz Studio almost exactly 3 years ago. My DIM just passed 11,000 ... all of it is loaded on the computer and takes up nearly 1 Tb. I also have a tiny amount of free items, items from other stores, or items I have made myself. I do a lot of kit bashing and I would say that I have used a good percentage of it and have ideas for much of the remainder as time permits. I bought most of my stuf in 2016 and 2017 ... I had less money available in 2018 ... but my wishlist is over 3000 ... in part because I am working with generations 3,4,5,6,7,and 8 - they are all useful.

Daz Studio did get my attention because it was free ... I soon learned it could be quite useful ... then I learned about sales discounts, stacking, glitches, and SHOPPING CART JENGA. I won't complain about what it has cost ... my work is getting used (although not payed work - I volunteer a lot) and that is what it is for.

I did something similar . I separated my content on their own drives. and use windows search to locate content.   Boy did that ever make life easier finding things. Plus it allows me to use more than one computer to access my content folders so I can build one scene on my lap top while rendering a scene on my render rig. plus when needed i can just add another HHD drive  as much as i spent on 3d content hard drives are cheap in comparison.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Render rig C/drive 524 gig SSD  is just for my system, everything else goes on their own drives running through USB3 super hub.

Laptop c/drive 264 gig SSD is just for my system networked with USB 3

2 TB Portable External Hard drive 1  - All my daz content only ~ 407 gigs

2 TB Portable External Hard drive 2 - All my renderosity & miscellaneous third party poser content. ~ 279 gigs

2 TB Portable External Hard drive 3 - All my bill board props& flat panes & shaders  149 gigs

2 TB Portable External Hard drive 4- is for my own custom made 3d content, textures and animation storage  80 gigs

1 TB passport  SSD - drive 5 as a project drive. ( just used for creating & rendering my 3d projects on)

4 TB Seagate Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0  . for my system & storage back up, using Kaspersky back up utility. to make shadow copy of selected drives before shut down.  The size of the stuff stored on this drive changes with every back up. currently its at 3.2TB's used.   Back up is most important in my 3d world

Thanks for this; making note of y'alls excellent backup plan; right now I have at least 3 one TB drives full of stuff and one 4 TB drive..as a backup.  One of these is at least 500 GB of my texture art.  I am not sure exactly in GB how much DAZ stuff I own, I just know that since around late 2017 when I began getting back into the hobby, up to now, I went from 8 to 65 store pages.  I haven't downloaded everything as i really need a great backup plan - want to get several one TB SSDs now that the price appears to be coming down a bit.
