  Best way would be to learn to edit an opacity map, under surfaces.

  You don't even need to edit the map. Just adjust the opacity and the surface will become increasingly transparent. If the color/texture is already what you want and you just want it to be sheer this can do the trick.

  Personally, I find that translucency is a more realistic setting for that job than opacity; you want that slight haziness where things are clearer tight behind the fabric and then become indistinct at distance, rather than being able to see clear through to infinity.
