Please, I need help to identify the right type of RAM to buy.

Hi everyone, I'm here to ask you for advice on what kind of ram to buy.

At the moment I have three computers, a laptop only for Netflix, the one I use to work with 3D and the one I'm writing from, which I use for the internet, manage my house documents and the bills and taxes of my advertising graphics studio (3D is just a hobby) .

Anyway, it may seem strange, but I'm not a hardware expert, and when I have to buy something new, I look for the best pieces of the moment on Google and buy them, but I do not really know their true characteristics. This is to say that at this moment, I have not the faintest idea what should I do to increase the ram of this computer.

It 'a computer that I bought in 2014, quite cheap, I paid a few hundred euros (only the case), since it was to be used as a home computer. Chrome, the Canon scanner and printer program and little else. Everything worked great, but Chrome is getting heavier, and I'm noticing that even the performance is affected, and this is because Chrome is becoming too demanding in terms of ram, so I decided to take a module and add it (4 GB should be fine).

Now, as I said, I'm not an expert, but I tried to reflect and I started from the motherboard model, an ASRock H61M-VG3 with a 4 GB Kingston module. On the manufacturer's website, these are compatible rams

Once I have this list in front of me, I'm not sure what parameters I should look for, so I simply googled the code of the Samsung 4 GB module and I found this result on Amazon. The price is great, so I would like to know if it was 100% compatible with this motherboard. Also, I noticed tha the KVR13N9S8/4 code is on my computer's ram and on the Amazon's one too, but the other codes are different. For example, in my ram there's this code 9905474-022.A00LF, Amazon 99U5474-028.A00LF. Below, mine 0000006155829, Amazon 0000007437195-P005258, mine QBLTF-E9HCXL-QWX0B, Amazon 90L2R-X9KPW9-4WX06. Are these serial codes or something? Or indicate technical specifications of the ram?

In case it was not so, could someone give me some other advice? Thanks.

Is this a laptop? Many Memory manufacturers can provide memory lookup tools like this one, which give you pricing and info. That is what I tend to use.

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/ASRock/h61m-vg3

  • No, as I wrote, it's a desktop PC. Also, as far as I know, the ram must all be from the same brand, and my computer's Kingston, so I'm looking for another one of that kind.

If this is not correct then I do not know.

Go to this page with the laptop you want to upgrade your memory on:

    https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/memory-info?cm_re=homepage-_-main-body-_-us-buy-memory-button

and have them scan your laptop & recommend RAM upgrades.

If you then think the price is too high then you have compatible specs for the RAM recommended for your laptop and you can comparison price shop using those specs at Amazon or elsewhere.

The link I posted should help you. You'll just need to shop around at ram places, putting in your hardware specs to find the best deal. The store should also have numbers you can call if you want to follow-up.

Your mother board leaves you little choice. The problem is you are asking your question here in a 3d forum when you should really be using google. If you did you'd find as @nonesuch00 posted crucial.com

    Speccy

If you don't know what your hardware is, Speccy will tell you everything about your computer right down to your graphics card, your motherboard model, your ram, ram speed, how much ram you have, what kind of ram, etc. One thing to remember tho...it NEVER shows the right amount of ram on my gfx card for some reason...lol. It's showing at 2 gigs when it's really a 6gb card. *shrug* Oh, and the free version is all ya need.

  • To be clear that memory is a Kingston based on chips made by Samsung. If you want an actual Samsung stick you need to choose one from the list once you choose Samsung in the drop down on that web page. There are two 4 Gb sticks from Samsung validated for that motherboard.

The part number is the only number you should care about. The other numbers could be batch numbers or serial numbers.

  • Hey, thank you all for your suggestions. As soon as I come home from work I will follow your advice and I will try to check compatibility better.

kenshaw011267, with part number you mean KVR13N9S8/4, the one present on mine module and on the one from Amazon, right?
