Drawing tattoos on base texture?

I know there are products like inked and a way to use the texture edit feature in Daz Studio to place tats on figure skins.
but I like to draw my own designs and in the case of V4 I’d draw the tat right on the skin texture in photoshop.
I want to do this with the G3 and G8 figures but on some of the figures there are two texture maps one the base map and the I think the other being the normal map? Which would be better the base or normal maps or both?
Thanks

You will probably need to use L.I.E. since the many different parameters of the new Iray shaders will make the colors and clarity of the image on the actual diffuse texture look off, at least this has been my experienc adding tats directly to the textures
The 'base' map ie the map that goes in the Diffuse channel in the surfaces tab.
You're likely to need the tatoo on more than the diffuse map; the SSS, or whatever is in that channel (called Translucency Color); Specular may also need the tatoo too.
You should draw your tattoos on the base map and the translucency map.
I've made the tattoos on this render that way.
You will need it on the diffuse and translucency in Iray...and this tut may help with the general look https://www.deviantart.com/rawart3d/art/Tattoo-on-skin-texturing-329660194
Thanks Hylas oh BTW love the render being an old school sailor myself.
Thanks RawArt I’ll log into Deviant to take a look at this later.
And it will work for wounds, gashes and bullet holes. Yes I just watched Bird Box.
