Abit of a noob question? But for the CPU i had my mind set on going with Intel before i made this thread, mainly because of VR. I plan to get a better GPU later down the line for the Iray engine. However since the Intel i9 is pretty new, will it work ok with current Daz studio if i want to use the i9 for CPU rendering? I understand people are going to argue over Intel Vs AMD, but my original plan was Intel over AMD as long as Intel works with Daz studio without any hiccups.

Iray needs an Nvidia GPU     If you want to use Iray in the furture you would be better getting a machine that will support Nvidia cards,  so Intel rather than AMD.

    @bk007dragon @jmtbanks @Chohole @Dim_Reaper and the rest who's helped so far.

Cheers for your feedback guys, its been very useful, especially the last few replies about AMD Vs Intel. I think I will go for both SSD as my main C: drive, and a HDD for my D: drive. However what SSD drive do you guys recommend I get from Pcspecialist website? Dim Reaper suggested in a earlier post to get a "250GB WD Black M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/s R | 1600MB/s W)" since these drives are expensive, is that more then enough if I'm just running the core programs like Daz3D studio from it ect. I will be picking a basic 2Tb/3Tb HDD drive as my secondary drive.

If I do get the 1070 card I will definitely be checking out that Scene Optimizer link you mentioned in your reply bk007dragon.

The 3rd generation of Ryzen won't be released till either march-august so that's past my dead line. However since jmtbank has also been talking about the AMD CPU I've decided to have a look in to it. Here are my 2 builds so far. I've only added the important parts and left out the parts that don't matter, stuff like dvd drive, card readers ect. However they are still in with the final price on each build.

    INTEL BUILD

CASE: Corsair Carbide Series. Air 540 gaming case

CPU: Intel Core i9 Eight Core Processor i9-9900k (3.6GHz) 16mb cache.

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO: ATX, LG1151 USB 3.1 SATA 6GB - RGB ready.

    RAM: 64GB Vengeance DDR4 2666MHz (4x16gb)

1ST M.2 SSD DRIVE (dim Reapers suggestion) 250Gb WD Black M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/s | 1600MB/s W)

GPU: 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 - DVI, hdmi, do VR ready

    2ND STORAGE DRIVE: 3TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair 1200w HX Series Modular 80 plus platinum ultra quiet.

PROCESSOR COOLING: Coolmaster hyper 212X (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler

THERMAL PASTE: Cooler master mastergel maker thermal compound

    OS: windows 10 pro 64bit

    £2340 Inc VAT

    ---------------------------

    AMD BUILD

CASE: CASE: Corsair Carbide Series. Air 540 gaming case

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.53GHz/20MB Cache/AM4)

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte X470 AORUS Ultra Gaming ATX, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs - RGB Ready.

    RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666MHz (2x 16GB)

GPU: 11GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2080 Ti - HDMI, 3x DP GeForce - RTX VR Ready.

    1st STORAGE: 250GB WD Black M.2 NvMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/s R | 1600MB/s W)

    2nd STORAGE: 3Tb SATA - III 3.5" 6GB/s 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair 1200W HX SERIES MODULAR 80 Plus PLATINUM, ULTRA QUIET.

PROCESSOR COOLING: Noctua NH-U14S Ultra Quite proformace CPU Cooler

THERMAL PASTE: Cooler master mastergel maker thermal compound.

    OS: Windows 10 pro 64bit

Came to around £2610 just over my budget.

    @Chohole

Yep I know Iray needs an Nvidia GPU to get the best out of Iray. As for going with Intel over AMD well that was my original plan. However I've also been looking in to AMD since that has its pros and cons.

Regarding the SSD.  I would personally go with a 3.5 inch SSD rather than an M.2.  There is a 250GB Samsung 860 EVO under the "1st Storage Drive" on the configuration page.  I'd advise this as the M.2 drive can use up the resources needed for one of the PCI-E slots on the motherboard, and if you need to replace it in the future, you will find it a lot easier to clone your C: drive to a new SSD than to an M.2 drive.

I actually always run AMD machines,  but then I don't actually use DS.  and if I did ever decide to use DS it would only be as a plug in for my main program,  not to render in.   I Use Bryce.

I'm going to have to admit that was a bad suggestion on my part as it would involve you upgrading the CPU yourself later and selling on the initial CPU.  Hassle I don't think you're after.

  • CPU: Intel Core i9 Eight Core Processor i9-9900k (3.6GHz) 16mb cache.

Max Turbo Speed on the i9 is 5.0 GHZ so its 3.6 - 5.0.

Just noticed that the 1070 Ti seems to be available now on Pcspecialist website. it was grayed out afew days ago and said it would not be available till march. So i will be picking that card over the normal 1070 if they do now have it in stock.

Well another hopefully a final update on this build. The people who have been helping me, can you pretty please spend another few moments (I would be very grateful) if you can have a final check on this list, before i order my machine within the next week or so. Basically i just need you guys to give the go ahead, before I order my new build. It has also been tweeked a little.

Also one more little thing that's on my mind? The Sound Card in the list is the default one that's on the drop down list when making your custom build from Pcspecialist.co.uk. The (ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO STANDARD) Now since I can't think of any reason why I would need a better sound card? am i ok to go with the default Music Card, that's on my build? Or do you guys recommend putting a better sound card in my machine, if I'm gunna pay that much out? As said before I have no plans to do anything with music other then use this new Tower for Daz Studio and VR and surfing the web? If you think it's worth me dropping a little cash on a better sound card before I order then please let me know.

Here is my update hoping it will be the last.

I Personally think it looks beautiful.  Excellent choice for a CPU cooler, Noctua is the best cpu cooler on the market based on my research.  Thats the cooler I was looking at for my next computer build as well.

  • XtroXtro Posts: 39
@bk007dragon it was Dim Reapers suggestion on the Noctua CPU Cooler after I added the Intel i9 in the original build that Dim Reaper suggested. Anyhow I'm glad I've asked around on here for advice, so I know what I'm spending my hard earned cash on. Also I've learnt a few things on GPU and CPU by posting this thread. One more thing in my last reply, i enquired about the default Sound Card. Do you have any suggestions about that? Or do you think I'm ok with the default Sound Card on my Build?
  • jmtbankjmtbank Posts: 187

I've not bought a sound card since the 90's.  Its an easy decision though - you can just get one later.

You have a 1200W PSU in there so I assume you are intending to put a 2nd graphics card in the machine later [because thats the only reason bar nitrogen level overclocking you would ever have a 1200W PSU].

With a 2nd graphics card you will have to check whether you have space for 3 extra PCI cards that you have listed.  People often end up having to ditch their sound cards to accomodate 2 graphics cards.

Yep that's the reason I got a top power supply cos in future I may want to add a 2nd GPU. The site I'm buying from says my motherboard and tower are fine with 2 graphic cards. Edit: Or should I say I never got any compatibility issues when doing a test build and adding 2 NVIDIA GEFORCE cards with the motherboard and Tower.

  • Hi Xtro,

I have to agree with Bk007dragon - that is indeed a thing of beauty.  Looks like it will serve you well for many years because it has some easy upgrade options for the future such as a second gfx card.

As far as the sound card goes, I also agree with jmtbank.  I think the last computer that I had with a sound card was a Pentium IV.  These days the on-board sound is good enough for anyone except musicians.  I'd stick with the on-board sound and save the slots on your motherboard for other expansions later.

Good to hear about the 1070ti being back in stock.

Cheers guys for all your help. I message Pcspecialist yesterday, to ask if the 1070ti was definitely back in stock? They told me they had three 1070ti and ten 1070 cards left. Once them cards were gone they won't be getting anymore 1070 cards back in stock because of the 2070 due out. So last night i orderd my build that you guys helped me make. :) I can't wait to get it within 7 to 10 days if things go well with build and post. Funny enough, today i had a look on Pcspecialist build page and the 1070ti was grayed out again, so I must of been lucky and got the last card. Well i hope I did because i had a carry on for good half hour trying to pay for the dam thing with my credit card. (My bank temporary blocking the transaction) However manage to confirm it was me making the order by my phone and finally got my order through. Well guys, once again thanks for your help.

My new PC came today. Everything is looking good. Had a little trouble with getting my 2nd harddrive to show up in Windows10 but after me and a friend tinkering with it and letting some dude from Pcspecialist remote control my machine from his side, we eventually got it fixed. Just needed to connect and disconnect the second hard drive for Windows to recognise it. Another thing, I ain't installed Daz3D yet cos I want to make sure I install the runtime files on the 2nd hard drive. Should I also install the Daz3D program on my 2nd hard drive or keep that on my main SSD drive in (C:)? Basically have the Daz3D program on my C drive, but put all the Runtime files files on my F drive? What's your suggestion guys?

  • Launch Install manager but instead of entering your password select Work Offline - you can then configure its paths before starting to download.

  • I wouldn't disagree with Richard's answer above on how to start this as he is the expert on these things.

As for where to install, I would do as you mentioned - put Daz3D on the C: drive and set the path for your content on one of the HDDs.

Great looking machine, and very nice specs.  I hope it serves you well for many years to come.

just finished my daz install on C and put my backup runtime fils on D drive. looking good so far, just need to have a good play around inside Daz Studio to see if everything is running correctly. im definitely impressed with the new build. My old PC that i was using Daz3d on, might as well of been a Potato. This new build is miles ahead for me and i hope i also get many years of use out of this machine. :)

    too late now ;)

however one of the reasons i picked Intel over AMD was because of other non related Daz3d programs i want to do on my pc.
