Advice for GPU upgrade - GTX 1070 Ti or RTX 2070?
in The Commons
Hi All.
I'm considering to upgrade the GTX 970 to either GTX 1070 Ti or RTX 2070, but not so sure which one should I go for.
The 1070 Ti should offer a decent performance boost over 970 and is significantly cheaper than 2070. The 2070 is newer, and overall performance is better. But it has only 2304 CUDA cores, which is less than 1070 Ti's 2432 cores.
Also if I understand correctly, the OptiX Prime API which Iray utilizes is still not supported with Turing cards (20XX series). Should I still get the newer card for the overall performance gain?
Please give me some advice. Thanks!

Just because the 1070ti has more cuda cores does not mean it will be faster than the 2070, there are other factors that contribute to render speed, its just that cuda count has the biggest impact. For example, looking at OctaneBench scores, the 1070ti scores 152, and the 2070 scores 210. Thats a significant difference. Granted you will be using iray and not Octane, but the results should be very similar.
The 20 series cards are supported in general by the newer versions of iRay, which i believe is implemented in the Das Studio 4.11 beta builds. What is not supported by any GPU render engine yet, is the 'RT' cores on the RTX cards. At present renderers are using the RTX cards in the same way that previous generation cards were being used. Once iRay is updated to use the RT cores, you will see another significant performance increase. Early testing version of RT core support in Octane have showed 35% performance gains compared to not using the RT cores.
If it was me and i felt like i had to upgrade, and was not planning on any further GPU upgrades in the next year or so, i would get the 2070. But my advice to you is if you dont have to upgrade right now, dont. Wait until renderers are using the RT cores on the 20 series cards, and save more money between now and then. By the time RT cores are supported, you may be able to go up to a 2080 or they may have released a 2070 ti
RTX 2070 is already faster than GTX 1080 in some applications, but miss the new drivers for iray, so it affects performance in Daz Studio 4.11 beta.
Very wise words joseft. Contrary to popular belief there is never a "right time" to upgrade your box. If you upgrade your GPU just before a new one comes out, it wasn't a bad decision bcause the new one will certainly be much more expensive than the one you got.... so on balance you haven't really lost out.
Albeit if the 2080 I just bought (similar performance to a 1080ti), suddenly has a magical performance increase with RT support, then I might be kicking myself if I just got a 1080ti. But I did pay a lot more for it. Swings and roundabouts.
I had a 1070 (not ti) before it broke down and replaced it with a 2070. The difference is not like night and day, but still very noticeable, you just need the current DAZ beta. I would recommend the 2070 if you can afford it.
Thank you all. That's very helpful.
Seems the 1070 Ti is not a good choice. Guess I will wait for a while and go for a 20 series.
