You'd have to define "detail" a little better for any relevant answer, but merchant resource textures are usually left fairly generic, as the idea is that PAs will add their own additional details to modify them. Beyond that, you'd have to define whether you're looking at the resolution of the skin surface, the proper application of laugh lines and other creases, and, depending on your taste, the number or lack therof of skin irregulaties. And then you'd have to factor that versus what actually looks right for the character being sold, since while you don't normally want a lot of pores or freckles on a teen or fashion model type character, the exact opposite applies to a macho male or an older person. All that said, the Elite textures for V4 & M4 were the state of the art at the time they were produced, yet many of the last two generations of characters look much better thanks to Iray, HD morphs and better mapping techniques.
Now, in terms of peresonal taste...I find that Linday's work is always exceptional and (her?) Satine HD and Syble HD are incredibly realistic. Neither, however, is the kind of glamour character that DAZ is known for. I also tend to really like the stuff that's made by ISource textures since that PA's usually includes options forf real world skin imperfections like small cuts and acne, and Saiyaness does amazing work, especially with male characters. DAZ's own Rune 7 is another really solid skin, though it's compromised by the fact that it came out when DAZ was still obsessed with giveing every character a unique UV set.
thanks..the last paragraph is more what i was looking for, I guess. Do you think the elite V4/M4 stuff would be adpatable to work with Iray and would they hold up to the current products you specified, or close?
Reason I ask,. some are on sale right now pretty cheap.
I use the older skins all the time and, in my experience, the V4 & M4 Elite skins hold up quite well, as do many of the others from the V4 generation, and they're certainly as good as some of the "newer" skins as many PAs are still using the same skin photo resources they've used since V4. (And, sadly, some of the best skin resources are no longer available at all.) That said, to use the older products with G7 or G8 you have to use them with Cayman Studio's Legacy UV sets or convert them with Blacksmith3d, and, if you're using Iray, apply an iray skin convertor like NGS Anagensis 2, Beautiful Skins or Altern8. In fact, using the Iray convertor usually makes them look much better than they ever did when they were used on V4/M4 in 3DL. They won't have the advantage of specifically matching HD morphs, of course, and you don't have the convenience of having all the surface settings already optimized. I use V4/M4 skins because I already have hundreds of them, but using the newer products is a lot quicker since it's just plug and play.
