Blondie9999? Noggin? Is there a list of people that are going to be removed you found or something? Or is the store not updating for me to remove these?
For those who can not afford hardware upgrades to run the latest version of Daz studio or any software or computer or smartphone OS, your choices will become more and more limited as time passes....sorry
This Commercial product market is no dfferent from any other in that regard.
And sorry but.....NO... ejected, retiring, migrating Daz PA's have Zero Obligations to notifiy anyone they are leaving the Daz store.
They owe you nothing.
You were not "special" to them despite any delusion of " personal connection" via internet forum interactions
It was a straight forward business relationship for whatever time it lasted.
He/she was a seller and you were a buyer (or "wishlister")
Products lines Dissappear from your favorite real world retailers & grocers everyday.
Many choices remain abundant .
I'm just surprised anyone even notices such old products vanishing. Gives me great hope that somebody may still care about my stuff in 20 years
I have no idea. One I definitely know is Alibama, they released a product this August (Traditional Chinese Study Room), but are now gone.
The sets are available because people still buy them. I only just picked up the G3 poses the other day, having had the cello for years (also, Protozoon made a "fix" to use those poses with a still-available free cello on ShareCG).
If you really want to know who's missing, check out the vendor page (www.daz3d.com/vendor) with the Wayback Machine. Compare different versions to see what's changed over time.
I think its nothing to be overly concerned about. Most of these people hardly put any content on the daz store to begin with.
Adam has his own online store which I've purchased a few things from.
Darkworld has a strong store on Renderosity and I've purchased from him too.
People's priorities change overtime. Sometimes making products is a temporary inspiration and it comes and goes. For others on Daz store like Fred Winker, Lyoness, Zeddicuss, Marcius, Stonemason, DzFire for example, it may be a way of life thus there is committment. Look at Thorne for example. Lots of products during Victoria 4, not so much now, just the occasional morph kits and a character or two from time to time.
Its the ebb and flow of Daz3D. Life happens and people adjust or stay the course.
There are several benefits to being a PA other than the sales money. There are/were PAs here at Daz that have never produced anything at Daz (their products came from another brokerage and they haven't made anything else since). It doesn't make sense for people who haven't produced anything to continue getting benefits. Every brokerage does this. The requirements may vary, but every brokerage has production requirements for people to continue to have vendor status. Here, the store is closed or bought out sometimes, and if the vendor creates something new, the store is back. Elsewhere, the products are thrown into a bargain bin of sorts (which often riles the vendor).
A lot of the "old timers" are also getting older and retiring. I seem to recall two folks recently posting their goodbyes in the forums. Some of them that have retired stores are coming back after an extended vacation (so new stores will be up). Some folks just have to get day jobs and don't have time to make 3D content anymore. Some vendors get embarrassed by their old work as they've improved and ask for products to get removed. You'd be shocked at how harsh some vendors are on their own stuff. Literally embarrassed by it (I have no shame, so no troubles from me). Some of the best vendors at Daz have asked for products (that were still selling) to be removed because they were embarrassed by them. Some vendors just don't want to mess with it all anymore.
I should have waited to post. You wrote it better than me :D
I was under the impression Thorne was still working, but products were being released as DAZ Originals? Or have I been misunderstanding?
This is pure speculation about why Daz retires stores:
Daz is a business and businesses exist—ultimately—to make money, I assume the decision on Daz's end to retire a PA's store is usually about the money. As PA's get "Published Artists Perks" that include PC+ Membership and a PA discount, keeping the store of an inactive vendor means an apparent loss of revenue each time they make a purchase, without the offset of new releases and the bump to revenue those bring.
I am not a PA, nor do I have insider knowledge, but it seems to me changing the agreement with the PA's could solve the problem while keeping the stores and their products available for the customers. I think having a stipulation that, after the first year as a PA, six months of inactivity will result in the loss of the membership and PA discount, but the store remains active and the PA can continue to submit products for consideration. And then, upon acceptance of their next product, the membership and PA discounts are reinstated. Of course, there would need to be a definition of inactivity. And a probably a bunch more legal specifics to make the changes work well for both Daz and the PAs.
But I do think it's worth exploring because obviously we, the customers, are unhappy when a product or store goes missing. Especially when a product disappears between the checkout and actual payment!
Of course, it's not always up to Daz. As pointed out already, there are PAs who decide, for whatever reason, to pull products, close their store, or close here and move elsewhere. Or the PA is no longer with us. Simon-3D passed away, and now his store is gone. But Draagonstorm also passed away and her store is still here. Why retire one and not the other? More than likely, it's up to the heirs, unless the PA has made it known they want their products to remain available after they're gone.
You have a very harsh view of this business. I, and many others, disagree completely. I don't seek a personal connection to every PA. But I respect those who have reached out in the past. I'm very likely to purchase more of their products because of that personal connection. In contrast, I will avoid any PAs who choose to show disrespect in the forums.

You have sucha great way of putting things into prospective
It's really a matter of whether the PA's store still brings in money to Daz or not. It's not like hard goods that have to be re-purchased when they wear out-- my purchase history has plenty of discontinued products I can re-download if I ever lose my files-- but they also have to make room for new products, from current and prospective PAs both. And sometimes the discontinuance is by the PA's own choice, for whatever reason. At one time I had four products in the store, but one was such a dud that it seemed to be dragging the whole store's sales down. I asked that it be pulled maybe five or six months after launch. And since you mentioned 3DL (Iray didn't even Beta-test until DS 4.8), check your inbox.
Agreed 110%. And I have respect for most PAs, and great respect for those who release new products as PC+ items. Even moreso for those who provide freebies, and ESPECIALLY the revolutionary PAs (e.g. Zev, Sickleyield) who also provide freebies, to the point that the limitations of the English Language annoys me (no way to use an honorific of any kind to address female vendors without knowing their marital status, which is none of my business. Also, no gender-neutral mild honorifics)
I have little respect for PAs who are overly condescending to non-PA customers (excepting responses to rude or hostile posts, or during a rough period in their life) on a regular/consistent basis to the point that I am likely to avoid buying their products.
Then just take their PA and PC discounts if they haven't made anything for more than 2 years. (I think 1 year or 6 months is going way too far. Historically, some of our best vendors only made 1 or 2 products a year, or 1 product every 2 years, and deadlines reduce product quality)
I refuse to buy from Rendo anymore because my credit card has been stolen twice (or was it 3 times?) on their site within a 3 year period, and they were so slow to do anything about or admit it, even after over a dozen people told them that the stolen card had only been used on Rendo. They kept trying to pass the blame on to someone else, particularly Daz for some reason. (I refuse to associate with Paypal, so that is not an option) Besides, none of Darkworld's old Daz products have been moved to Rendo (and they wouldn't survive 6 months, anyway. I hate how quick Rendo is to retire products)
Digital I Designs, Blondie, Estevez, Darkworld, and Don Albert barely put any products on in the first place? All four of them released more than 20 products during their lifetime.
Retiring or far worse. Which is entire different pet peeve of mine. No, not towards them, just towards reality.
Probably not. I've been sketching and writing fanfics since age 4 (well, minus the writing part, which I didn't start until age 9). As you might imagine, the fics I wrote as a teen are absolutely horrendous and beyond embarassing-- far more so than a bad, ancient PA item.
As for my drawings, I'm extremely self-critical, and can never get them quite the way I want them-- and on top of that I am pathologically over-critical of myself with low self-esteem. The only thing that surprises me is how hostile and defensive some people can be to even the gentlest and most polite constructive criticism or critiques whatsoever. Mainly because I am the polar opposite and actually WANT people to catch my mistakes and imperfections (so long as it's actual constructive criticism and not mere whining or insults.)
I don't see any downside whatsoever in Daz announcing soon-to-be retired stuff. Daz and the PAs would get sales they wouldn't have had otherwise and the customers would be happier. It would be a win-win-win situation.
Also, to back up what Ron said above: nasty PAs get no business from me, either!
Why are you picking on Blondie? Again, do you know something we don't?
I find this 3D Art stuff quite intoxicating, and sometimes rewarding. I really admire people who are able to make money from their talents. Yes, DAZ is a business. They will do what they want, what they feel is good for business. I don't have any quarrel with retiring these PA's. I wish everyone all the best.
I'm done here.
Wait, are you referring to me? Blondie hasn't made anything since the early Genesis2 days, and as far as I can tell, he has not updated any of his products (which should be their choice to begin with, not Daz's). Same with Mairy, 3Dream, and Valea. I am not picking on or cricizing them at all-- in fact I am upset that they, too, will be kicked out.
Agreed 100%. I would love to see this a few months in advance, as well as announcements by the PAs (when it is their decision instead of Daz's) with a top-of-the-page banner (Aave Nainen's handling was almost perfect. I only say almost because I think he only gave a 1 or 2 weeks notice. I consider this more than satisfactory for a PA, even if it is not ideal. It was also beyond awesome that he placed a huge discount on the retiring products, but it's not something that I would expect or demand of PAs. For Daz however, I hold higher expectations-- as in several months in advance so that we can take advantage of possible sales and plan our budgets ahead of time. I wouldn't want a top-of-the-page banner though, just a carousel box.)
... Since when have I been the "face" of DAZ? o.O
This is a really interesting comment to me. For the most part, if a PA isn't releasing a product every month, this is not their full time income, and they have a day job. There is one vendor that I am aware of that doesn't release something monthly (but pretty darned close) that does this as full time income and even that vendor has another source of income as well (you can tell from my store, I am not full time :D ). So this is interesting to me because it reminds me that the concept of "a lot" is different for us PAs than it is for customers. There are vendors that put out products 2-3 times a week. Anyway, I just thought it was interesting.
Edit: And as a side note, to keep your wishlists from losing stuff, I'd look at the oldest stuff on it and if it's product number is anything lower than say, 35,000, I'd buy it sooner rather than later. I think the oldest item in the store right now is around 207. Current releases are around 56,000.
I am 100% speculating but I have seen artists (still here) sell products to DAZ and hence the products become Daz Originals but they continue to create PA art for sale on this site. It seems, Daz comissions an artist to create whatever and buys it out prior to release and I would assume artists can say yay or nay but I may be wrong. Ironman i13 recently became, for the most part, Daz originals. I bought most of her inventory at 30-60% off and recently purchase more at (just a sec ... I have to go look at spreadsheet) at 2.99 for bundles! Before I could check out they were converted to Daz Originals but that writing was on the wall for anyone who followed her. Sometimes this transfer of rights is due to other issues, maybe financial, health or other personal reasons. As a semi-retired artist, I would never announce I am retiring or leaving to any venue I still had a financial interest in because oftentimes it devalues the product and oftentimes it's a site decision. Some people leave disgruntled, like the bird guy who had ruffled feathers and continues as a 3D artist on a different site. That's how business goes. The beat goes on. It's like a plant - death promotes growth and fresh flowers don't make everyone sneeze. The bottom line is if you like and have a use for it - buy it.
I bought that the 24th of October so they haven't been gone too long~
I was about ready to start buying again around the time of the last forum up-rising over this. After that nonsense though, my enthusiasm to purchase here has dwindled down to near 0
The thing that makes me dump my entire cart is when I get offered a very recent pose item for a musical prop that no longer exists. That should not be in the store unless the prop exists in the store. Yes I am referring to the cello by Melody Man. Yes he passed away on Jan 6 2017 (cancer) but when a prop or figure is obliterated so should be the poses and add-ons.
Edited Object /prop not figure.
What I find disconcerting is the loss of the vendor's page which is useful when you're installing pretty much from scratch on a new PC and want to know the dependencies and if there are similarly styled prods or a series vendor has made so you can get the names to also install if you have them.
Clicking on the "i" in DIM is only the beginning of the process because the page you land on often doesn't even have a blurb. Links from there are available to Prod page and the vendor name. If not accessible you're SOL.
Take Blondie whose vendor page is still there as of this writing. I found "Diner" food which is easy to remember so I can install all, but never in 100 yrs would I have remembered about the Sushi stuff if I hadn't looked at her/his page.
The cello was released almost exactly five years ago. Potentially hundreds of people own this item. I disagree that vendors who make add-ons should be "penalized" (along with customers who purchased the base item) when the base product disappears after years on the market.
Nevermind.
The instruments are under Melody Man in my DIM.
[I deleted misleadig message]
Here's a general guidline: if a vendor hasn't gotten anything in the store two years they are due to be culled. Right or wrong, it is a business decision to keep the store fresh.
I still see Blondie9999 in the store with 127 products, which is a bit more than 20, but it has been a while for her, so if you wanted something buy it now. Some vendors have done catalog buyouts to Daz, if they desire, and if Daz feels there is still marketability in those items. Details of that are between Daz and the vendor.
