Why are we losing so many ancient PAs this year?

What in the world is going on?  Did DAZ enact some sort of new, stupid rule that has the old guard pissed off, or something?  (something like "make all your ancient products Daz-compatible or leave" or something like that?  Or maybe because of the annoying-as-hell change where most Daz originals don't list the PA, so you have to go to the categories and hope you click on the correct vendor name.)
So far this year we have lost Adamthewaites (Genesis Baby), Aliwonder, Bea, Codeman Studios, Darkworld, Estevez, JesterCGI, John Malis, HolyForest, Lourdes, Lwanmtr, Morphtactic, Nimos, and most recently, we lost Digital I Designs (recent enough that add-ons have yet to be pulled from the store).  In addition, Davo moved all of his products to Renderotica.  Most of these have been within the past 6 months (I think Morphtactic and Nimos were a bit earlier, though)

Also, any possible heads up on other PAs that will be leaving soon, so I can snatch up their old products before they are gone forever?

I had a hair texture set disappear from my cart (and the shop) between loading the cart and checking out.

Bought the hair, checked out, filld a new cart, nodded off, woke up, too late. Ya snoze , ya lose for real.

That was yesterday, a PC+ item and only 40 cents so not a biggie but I'm happy as I panicked and bought most of the John Malis and Lourdes products  not long before their banishment.

..wow, good thing I recently got the Nimos buses before this.

  • I think you are looking at this the wrong way, for everyone you loss you gain 2 more vendors. I've never seen so many, so the choices are a lot more !

  • I think sadly, you answered your own question by referring to them as 'ancient'.. and I say that with all due repect, being an oldie myself.

A lot, like you say, have been absorbed into the store, so not all has been lost.

I understand "ancient" products have to be retired BUT I would really appreciate a warning so if I still want them I can purchase them before and not be frustrated.

Or have a massive "90% OFF Retiring-Next-Month" sale every month.
Might as well grab a few bucks before you stop getting any.

If products must be retired, how many people are still buying V3 and older stuff?

  • Simon-3D's store disappeared this past PA festival as well. Sadly, he passed away not that long ago. Given that he made the Melody Man instruments, I don't see why the Melody Man pose sets from Don Albert are still available (also the cello pose set for Genesis 3 from Protozoon used them), seeing as the required items are no longer available, but I suppose if you're determined enough, you could adjust other instruments for said pose sets.

Redspark is still around, though their store is no longer up here on Daz due to inactivity (according to their FB). Last I heard, they were thinking of moving Chip, et all to Hivewire, but who knows if anything will come from that, especially since it's based off of another PA's existing figure (Cookie). From the sound of things, they had a really rough 2 years which lead to said inactivity, so I don't think it was entirely fair to jettison their store from Daz when other PAs that haven't been active in years' stores are still around... but it's not my place to judge/speculate further than that. :V

They don't have to be retired. Not if the PA updates them. (Always assuming it's actually worth doing. In many cases it isn't).

A case in point is my Fashion Studio which I updated last week. It's perhaps the oldest product in the store (SKU_32), but is now massively improved and 100% compatible with current technology. This is its 3rd update, and it may not be the last.

However, I agree that with many older products, it just isn't worth the bother.

This is why I don't think retiring products are announced.. PAs are a fickle bunch; I would think a 90% off fire sale of their hard work would be more of an insult than praise. I would look at it that way; if a PA wants to do a last chance sale, they'll announce it rather than to have people expect products to be discounted before removal.

But if you're afraid you'll lose out on a product, check to see when the last time that PA has released anything (in addition to it looking like it may not sell) and plan from there.

Pas have to produce new content every so often to remain in the store I believe. If you want something by a pa it’s always s good idea to buy it as soon as you can. You never know what will happen.

While this is true, it goes against the idea of seasonal sales. Why have seasonal sales when I need to buy stuff whenever they come out, since I don't know how long they will be in the store? This reduces the usefulness of seasonal sales to items that I don't want, but hey, they're cheap, let's get them.

  • I may have even paid full price for some things that have been retired if only we were informed so the insult argument is moot, yes have bought stuff heavily discounted why wouldn't you, and a lot of it still in the store, is a matter of being notified if it's going not it being necessarily being put in clearance because I tried and could not second guess what actually went even though I fullly speculated much would again this year.

  • I dare say some would pay full price for V2 and M2 if they were offered wink

  • It's not only ancient content - I missed out on the really amazing Painter's lights by j.cade. This one hurts badly.

As for who buys V3 and M3 content, I do.  Some of their outfits or skins can easyly stand up to more modern products, as long as you don't decide to do a close--up. And they use less ressources. Besides they had some historical themed clothes which never reappeared for newer figures.

rdna had a category called 'retiring products'.or something like that.  It was in a prominent place you could see it whenever you entered the main page.  I guess they don't want to do that here, even though it encourages ppl to buy stuff before it's gone forever.

If products are retiring here why can't they make a sticky in the Commons that lets us know?  If vendors are 'fickle',  I'd rather have my customers grab all the sales I can before my product was retired.  Money is money. Make it while the sun shines. Or like Male-M3dia says, encourage PA's to make forum announcements before things just drop off the planet.  I lost my chance as did otheres here to get things that were on my wish list, or had in my cart and they just disappeared.  The store says you're not producing the required number of products, you're sales are way down, and you don't have a very big catalog, so bye bye.  If you know that, then give us the chance to get them, and get yourself a few bucks on the way out.  Give your customers a chance to get things so it doesn't end on a sour note for ppl who've been supporting you in the past,

Oh, good suggestion! I can't always budget for everything I want-so 'll definately be doing this.

There won't be updates for the ancient products if they're gone from the store!? May not be useful for newer Daz platform (Iray)?

  • Not everyone can or could sustain the output rate that regular output of new products (all the way to the store) would require.  If you want to sell, submit it.  If it makes it, congratulations.  If you're looking for something that is gone from the store, see if you can contact the PA for a copy.  They might have one to share with you.

How many vendors have released a new product to the store and had their store removed within a year?

I'd like Ati and Overdrawn (or someone so inclined) to make a script that compares a user's Product Library content with the store's current inventory and lists them, a DISCONTINUED filter, if you will. I use the store as my first stop for render reconnoiters, and removed items are sometimes not considered as a result.

They can't be listed in the store itself along with the other products (since they are not in the store anymore), but your product library page could theoretically indicate this. I put this on my TODO list.

@Ati That's EXACTLY what I had in mind. And thank you for considering my request and for the ease and joy and intelligence and efficiency you have brought to my daz3d.com shopping experience. I remember what life was like before DAZ-DEALS, and things are so much better now, thanks to you and Overdrawn!

    just bought it too.

No, I am not.  I do not use the newer products because I prever Daz 4.5 and my computer is from 2010.  It doesn't have the CPU power to render the newer stuff.

Not everyone can or could sustain the output rate that regular output of new products (all the way to the store) would require.  If you want to sell, submit it.  If it makes it, congratulations.  If you're looking for something that is gone from the store, see if you can contact the PA for a copy.  They might have one to share with you.

None of the retired PAs post here or are available on this site or over email.  I mean, Darkworld is on Rendo, but messaging him there is probably inappropriate.  I have no idea how to contact Lourdes, John Malis, Digital I Designs, or Morphtactic, and I really wish I could contact those two.

Pas have to produce new content every so often to remain in the store I believe.

SO that IS what is happening.  How stupid.  Also, hoping the 3DL versions of updated products are still compatible with Daz4.5.  Because I won't be DLing newer bversions until a "dual boot" possibility is made, and Genesis 2 is the most recent figure that I am willing to use (I sure as hell am not re-buying everything for the new figure every 2-3 years!).  I don't like Iray.  Man, this sucks!  Dammit, retired PA stuff is almost never 50%+ off!

But if you're afraid you'll lose out on a product, check to see when the last time that PA has released anything (in addition to it looking like it may not sell) and plan from there.

Thing is thst some of us only buy products when they are 40% or more on sale, usually 60% or more.  I have products on my wishlist that have been sitting there for years.  I am low-middleclass, and inactive PAs almost never have their products on sale.  Most of us are on extremely limited budgets.  I might be able to spend 250~300 USD here on a good month like this one or March Madness, but usually I only spend bet. 25~60.

Argh. Items removed from the store again. Two from my wishlist for sure, not sure about the rest. :(

So Eva1, RingoMonfort, Rajraja, Ness, Noggin, Blondie9999, Valea, Orion, Idler, Jim Burton, Gareee, Redspark, Debra Ross (!!), Mairy/3Dream (why?!?!?!), and friggin' Mallenlane of all people (seriously, Mallenlane?!?!?!?!?  He created Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, and all three Millenium Dragons!!  Debra played a role in creating most of our millennium creatures as well!  How can you guys remove their non-Daz-original products from the store?!?!?!??!  They are as much the face of Daz as Valandar!  That would be like Hivewire removing LB or 3DMenagerie from the storie due to inactivity!) are about to disappear from the store forever, in addition to probably more than a dozen others.  We've lost all non-Daz Original Bryce content except from ForbiddenWhispers, Horo, David Brinnen, and (soon to disappear) Eva1.  Seriously.
This also means that almost all Vue and Carrara content is already gone or about to disappear.  This is utterly, completely absurd!  "Oh, durr hurr, make new products or leave, derp derp!"  Ugh!  This was one of the things that I loved about DAZ and RDNA over Renderosity.

BTW, currently there are only 189  bryce products left on Daz store.  199 for Carrarra, and 51 for Vue.  It won't be long before Daz might as well just up and retire all 3 software products, because there won't be any add-ons left in the store.
