dForce Hair Settings

Has anyone experienced dForce hair products simulations that seem to be taking longer than anticipated/advertised? The Classic Long hair, for example, says that simulations take 5 minutes with an nVidia 1080. That has 2560 Cuda Cores.  I have a Titan Z which has 5760 Cuda cores, and my simulations tend to take well over 15, closer to 20 minutes ( a 300-400% time difference.)  Is there a card difference that makes the 1080 calculate faster than the Titan with less cores?

A five minute simulation would be great... you can experiment with subtlties.  But 20 minutes per simulation on top of the render time (because you don't really know what it looks like until it renders) makes the products almost unusable.

I have tried to follow settings as best as possible, but am I missing something?

Setting "Start Bones From memorized Pose" to Off is part of it (otherwise it is an hour simulation.)

If I am missing some settings that could speed things up, I wouold really appreciate some tips.

I don't mean to be calling out this hair product, or the creator. I have expreienced similar results with other dforce hair products I have bought that make them hard to use as an mid-level amatuer.

Sometimes upping the gravity helps move things along, you can double the gravity.

Also check if you feel you have a result you can live with and stop it there. There is a duration slider you could try.

  • Is the4 Titan Z the same geenration as the 1080? CUDA cores are not generally equivalent across generations. Also, how long a simulation will take depends on the scene

Do you have complicated collision objects, like earrings and fancy clothing collars? Have you tried just the hair on a nude character in an empty scene to see how long that takes as a baseline?
  • Thanks everyone... I will try all of those suggestions.  The gravity has definitely helped a little, but it does pull the hair a bit flatter and straighter giving it a slightly different look. Nice to know this as it gives another way to customize the look.  No fancy collars, but my character does have simple earrings.  My Titan will be three years old in January.  I am not sure how to tell what generation it is.  Please don't tell me I need a new video card, lol.

Do you have your Titan selected for the OpenCL Device in the Advanced tab of the Simulate pane?

  • @Barbult---Yeah I do.  But it only allows one card, and the Titan is actually made up of two cards.  So I guess I am only getting half of my cores being used.  Too bad mutiple cards can't be used.

Is the long hair the only item that has dForce enabled?  I have a 1080ti and for most things it takes about five minutes, however just one more dForce item shoots up the simulation time.  I really think it's your card and you've run into a limitation, though an hour is a long time.   I have also fun that simulation times increase some after I do multiple simulations back to back--after adjusting things.   When times get too long, I reboot and times are restored back to normal.  I've had Daz crash when I do too many back to back simulations, so I think there are some bugs in the code that are corrupting areas of memory--but those bugs don't generally show up after running say five or simulations (that's just a guess--I've never counted).

  • In this scene the hair is the only thing that is dForce enabled. I haven't tried taking the earrings off the character, but they are basically stud earrings a little larger than pearls, not hanging earrings or anything that seems like it would complecate things.  It just seems the studs blend with the surface of the ears. I can always try removing them.  But that is one variation I haven't tried yet.

Just on an off chance, what is your collison mode set to?  Found in the Simulation Settings >Editor tab directly under Environment.
