Iray Storm

This looks amazing, but I was wondering if there is a way to animate the rain? Even if it's just an option to make it move in the parameter tab like how I can make the glass shatter and fly in shattered? I plan to pick it up regardless, but there's an animated shot I'm working on right now that rain would just add so much to that I'd pick this up today if making it move is possible.

Thank you!

Hi Bennie, i know very, very little about animating in studio, so i can't give you a concrete answer. However, i've replicated the weather grids used in Unreal engine 3 which used to be animated, so i assume it will work similarly. The rain materials tile, so if you can animate vertical/horizontal offset, you should be able to achieve the effect you're looking for. Again, i'm not familiar with DS animation, so it's probably best to wait for more answers before you proceed.

As a side note - if you do decide to animate the rain, i would definitely take advantage of the integrated denoiser available with the Beta version of Daz studio. Otherwise you're probably looking at only 2-3 frames per hour on a couple of high spec cards.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you so much for the quick response! I do believe having them tile will work for what I need! I'm not going to get home from work until later this afternoon, so maybe someone else will pop on here and confirm, but if that's what you did, then I'm going to err on the side of it should be good to go. I'll let you know how it turns out!

And I just saw a thread about 4.11, so I'm going to look into getting that as well to take advantage of the denoiser. Thank you for the tip!

    I appreciate your help :)

No problem Bennie, i hope it fits the bill for you. If not, remember you're covered by the daz's refund policy. Post back in here if you have any issues smiley

  • Okay, so I haven't rendered it out yet (my PC with the 1080TI card is rendering something else, but it should work. All I did was had the rain start out of frame on frame 0, set the keyframe, and then moved it ahead like five frames and moved it below the ground. I can render that animation out and in FCX just layer it upon layer to make the rain continuously come down!

This could take a couple of days until I'm able to make a render of this, till the shot's done and all, but if it works, I'll post it here if you'd like to see it!

Would definately like to see it!  I picked up the IRAY storm pack today.  If it can be animated, even better!

  • Perfect! I'll for sure post it then, check back here like Saturday or Sunday!

I, also, would be interested in seeing the results of your efforts.

  • Alright, so it looks awesome! I rendered out a lower res version at 486 instead of the 1920x1080 I need for my film, the lower res took about 5 hours to render all 133 frames whereas it took an entire day to render out about 33 frames, so just for our purposes here to show everyone that it can work, I stopped the render and did it lower. So if you're on a 5K monitor, leave the video size small or else it's going to look super pixelated.

But this was super easy, I was thinking originally of making it way more complicated than I needed to with layers and all. Got to remember KISS lol. The only thing I need to change is the start and end of the rain within my shot. As you'll see, it looks like it's rev'ing up and slowing down at the beginning and end, that can be fixed easily by changing the start and end to about 10 frames before and after the shot. All I did was loaded the rain into the scene, marked that keyframe and then moved to the end of the shot and moved the rain's Y axis down until it was almost at the edge of the rain itself. You'll see if you go too far, that you can see the top and bottom because it's more thicker, so just don't go all the way and you're good! This was 133 frames and it fit the whole animation, but I could have started the Y axis higher in the beginning if I needed more time in the shot.

If I didn't explain this properly and anyone needs a better explaination, please let me know! I could probably do a tutorial if need be. Thanks for checking it out and thank you, KindredArts for making this awesome item! Maybe snow in the future? :)

    Have a great day!

    Bennie

  • If you want to animate you should probably consider KeyMate and GraphMate, with which you can set the interpolation type to linear and avoid the revving up and down entirely. I think Casual has a free script to do that too.

This came out great! I'm glad you figured it out, i probably would never have seen it in motion otherwise. smiley I hope to see more animations in the future.
