Can some one tell the point of having Daz Studio Library and My Library

Okay, I have been playing with Daz studio for about a month now and been installing things manually that come from zip folders. Some instructions say to install in DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library and other will say Install in .../User/Public/Documents/My Daz 3D Library.

Seriously is there a point to having to constantly install content in different locations on your computer. Is it Possible to just install everything in one location? I hate having to navigate through different menus to get to something that is used in another directory. I don't care about smart content or to be honest to have Daz install things for me with its manager.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I am just trying to understand.

  • The My Daz 3d Library in the Public documents is for Install Manager, though since some add-ons have to go to the same directory as the base (e.g. Victoria 4 and other fourth generation morph expansions) people tend to put all of their third-party content in there. The \Daz 3D\Studio\My Library is the default for user-saved files (since they are the user's documents) but was the only content directory in DS4 before Install Manager so older tutorials in particular may use it for content. There's also the My Daz Connect Data in the same Daz 3D\Studio folder, used for Connect installs (those made within DS). The separate folders are to keep things separated, but you do not have to work that way if you don't want to (my set-up has a single content directory for both DIM and Connect isntalls, plus a second content diectory in my Documents folder for new files).

  • Thanks, Richard for the response. So if I understand your post right if I wanted to can simply just store everything in the My Daz 3D Library and not worry about installing things in My Library. Everything should work correctly right? since everything is in that location then other things that depend on something else is in the same directory. Ideally, I am trying to set things up so I do not spend so much time searching and figured if everything is under one directory then that would be more efficient for me.

  • Yes, you can use the ne directory for all - though you can also use categorisation and links to group things together. Just make sure, if you have a multi-HD system, that the drive you use has plenty of space on it (you can move stuff later, but there are some potential minor/rare issues if you do).

  • Install Manager can be easily configured to install content into a base content directory, and from there you can do all the manual arrangements you want.

However, I will say that Smart Content Filtering is easily one of the best features of Daz Studio, especially if you have figures from multiple generations, where people couldn't be bothered to name something for the figure it went with, like V4, Genesis, Genesis 2, etc.

  • Thank you all for your advice. I will try soon to install everything in one directory. Right now my system has 2 drives. One Solid State drive and one storage drive. The solid state only has my OS on it and is very small like 250g my other drive is 1tb. So I tried to follow a tutorial using DIM to set up all my directories to put content on my Data drive, however, stuff still gets put on my SSD drive. I hope to fix this issue soon by taking my system in and having a 1tb SSD drive installed then I can install daz studio in default directories and feel more confident.

I do like the idea of Smart content, however, from what I have seen it only works with stuff you installed with DIM and products from DAZ3D only. I could be wrong cause I am new with this program. Overall my goal is to keep it simple and easy to find everything easily.

Thanks. I always wondered what the deal was with 2 libraries. Now that this can of worms is open, what's the deal with 2 Daz 3D folders? I'm using Win7 and it looks like one folder is in Documents and the other is in Public Documents. Maybe that's a Windows thing more than a Daz one. All I know is that one contains Install Manager content and the other has my Daz Studio libraries. And when I'm trying to get to my library, no matter which Daz 3D folder I click on, it's the wrong one. I think it's a quantum computing thing; neither folder is the one I want until I select the wrong one first. I need to go lay down now.

I agree, I reinstalled twice and did not know there was a second folder created so I had to hunt it down and delete it too after uninstalling the first time. It still created a folder in my roaming C: Users driver even after I told it to install everything on my D drive. Is this just something we have to deal with?

Initially, with Valentina, there could be only one database so I suspect the Public Documents location for DIM installs to make sure there were no issues if two people were using DS from different accounts (but that's my guess, not an official answer).

I think you're right. There are two folders, but they can have different security permissions.

  • Even logged in as administrator you don't get access to files and folders with enhanced permissions immediately - assuming UAC is on you will get the prompt asking if you want to allow changes for those, or you will have to use a toll being run as Administrator (which DS and DIM should not be).
