Character Creation Questions

Fae3DFae3D Posts: 2,845

I'm working on my first character freebie, but I've got a couple questions I'm haveing a hard time finding answers for.

First, I've created textures for face, arms, legs and torso, but not for eyes, mouth or any kind of shader.  It uses the stuff from Genesis 3 Female base.  Is it ok to save as a character preset and give out as a freebie, since anyone with daz would have those?  I've seen others do it, but... that doesn't always mean it's ok!

Also, I created a character morph using various free morphs designed for that, but I don't know how to package her so that someone doesn't already have to own those morphs to make her work.

It's a terrible, begginners job, and doesn't look like much, but I've worked hard on it and wanted to see if anyone else wanted to use her.  So any help would be great!

on the textures, are they merchant resources that can be used for freebies, since most can't.

Can't help with packaging as I always use the defaul base morphs and a shaping preset

    Got any images?

What I would do is put the texture you create in a folder with your name or initials on it,in the TEXTURES folder ,then a folder with your characters name on it inside that , put the texture you made in that folder .Then you apply your texture to your character in Studio and save it as a material ,when you create your folder to give away you only put a copy of the folders with your textures ,that way the material file will look for the Genesis Female textures and find them it will find your textures too without you includeing any textures that aren't yours .I have no clue about how to do the morphs though sorry

Yup, got permission directly actually.  And I don't have any full body images that are clothed, but here's the face.  It's like a Sexy Halloween Goblin sort of thing.

I think that's kinda what I did, but I just wasn't sure it was allowed to use Gen 3 Base eyes and mouth and shaders in the material.

You can use them just don't include them in your freebie like I said if you save the material file with the Gensis 3 textures still in their folders ,then Studio will still find them .. She's cute

Cool, then that part's good.  Now I just need to know how to get the morphs to work without the downloader having to have them as well...

I'm guessing Hexagon or Blender are involved somehow, but I've no clue how!

If the morphs are merchant resources with permissions for use with freebie characters, what you can do is export the character with the morphs dialled in as an OBJ - and then re-import in to make a full character morph of it. (You could also do just the head shape and then just the body shape as people tend to like to have the body and head shapes separated out).

Make sure you have the character at ZERO pose with just the morphs that you have been given permission to use for freebie characters dialled in. Make sure that no other morphs are dialled in (you can check this by going to the Parameters tab and scrolling down the list to make sure - dial out anything else). Change the character's resolution to "Base" then export it as an OBJ. Then re-import it back in via the Morph Loader Pro. You'll have to then adjust the rigging to the shape, do an ERC freeze, and then save it as a morph. It sounds complicated but it's not once you do it a couple of times. I'll see if I can find a tutorial to link you to.

Oh wow, that's much more complicated than I thought!  I really do want to learn this though, so I'll do my best.  If you do know of a tutorial, that would be amazing!  Thanks so much for your help! ^_^

Ok, here's a five minute tutorial on how to import and save morphs - I can't listen to it as my computer's sound is messed up, but it's by Josh Darling so I'm sure it's probably a great tutorial:

Uh-oh, Houston we have a problem.  I exported my morphed character as an obj, then tried to load it in using Morph Loader Pro.  I got to the part where you choose the morph files, choose a "catagory" to put it in, and then I press Accept.  But then I get this message saying it failed.  Any idea what I did wrong?

Oh that's Genesis 3 Female - I've not done morphs for that figure (I've only done morphs for G8). I'm not sure if there's something specific you need to do but I think I recall there being something about G3 lashes that might cause morph issues.

Are you sure that you're exporting the morph at "Base" resolution and with nothing else attached (like fibermesh brows, clothing, or hair)?

Aha!  That was the problem - I forgot to set it to Base before I made the morph.  Now it's working!  Thanks again, Divamakeup, you are so awesome!

Ok, I have one more (hopefully) question.  I have saved the shape, no prob.  I saved the material preset.  But my save path was messed up for the that.

Does anybody know the default path to save the material preset in?  I want to create the proper folder set for it, but I can't figure out where it goes.

Good grief, creating the right paths for all this is harder than making the character!

hahah Yeah, getting the files set up just right can be a pain in the bottom. You can save the materials preset a few different ways either under "Presets" >> "Materials Preset", or under "People" >> "Genesis 3 Female" >> "Materials" or if you want to set up your character so that she has her own folder that's also an option "People" >> "Genesis 3 Female" >> "Characters" >> Your Characters Name

Personally I'd set up the character with her own file - like the last option I listed. You can set up her shape preset(s) there as well as her materials presets and any other options you might want to provide with her. Having her shape and materials settings all in one place is more convenient and usually easier for people to find.

If you need help setting things up feel free to PM me.

When you go to share the files you'll also need to provide people with the "data" folder that has the morph saved in it. The data folder should be set up like:

data >> DAZ 3D >> Genesis 3 >> Female >> Morphs >> "Your vender name/the name you saved it under" >> "Product name you saved it under"

Divamakeup, once again, you rock!  I think I can finally get this character ready to go now.  Phew, all this for a really simple freebie, I have so much respect for you PA's who do this all the time!
