How to assign a drive letter in Windows 10
Also pick drive letters near the end of the alphabet. Windows 10 has a bad habbit of stomping on the earlier ones since it considers drive letters only to be a suggestion. Seriously.
You can fix a drive letter to a certain drive with Zentimo, I'd assume it will also work after a Win 10 update:

Oh great. I have 5 external drives. All my letters were changed when my computer was reformatted last month. Now they're going to be changed again? I have sticky notes on them now with their old names since I knew what was on each one. I should never have let my husband talk me into Win10. Win8.1 was fine for me.
Does this only involve external drives???
You can set them in Windows manually. I have not had windows change them on me yet since i first did that when I set up my computer
My external drive 'letters' weren't changed either, as I'd set them manually as well when 1st connected...
However, my Soundblaster settings were reset... if you have a SB-card, better save your profile if you haven't done that before....
Reading this I'm glad I still work with an older Windows version...
It didn't change me drive letters at all C, D, E, F, G and assigned to same corresponding devices as before the upgrade. The main reason I did the upgrade though was because I figured it'd save some system drive space & it did. I now have 4 extra freed GB.
Me too. Not that previous versions of Windows didn't have issues, but not nearly as many problems as Win10. Plus you had more control over things like updates so you could accept the security updates while permanently ignoring the other ones that borked some hardware or whatever.
Recent funny-but-sad report about trying to get MS's own game, purchased at their own Windows Store, to run on Win10 is here.
My nehew runs several dual boot systems with the default set to boot into linux
The new update changed his boot order and changed his system back to the windows bootloader instead of the GRUB bootloader and also messed up his network settings so that instaed of being able to see all eight of his computers on each machine most only showed one and some showed none at all.
He's been trying to fix it for the past 12 hrs
Dont dual boot.
Use a panel to torn on and off individual drives; much less haslte, uses less power too.
something like: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SISUN-5-25-CD-ROM-space-switch/dp/B074FXXBFK
People are also reporting that the 1809 upgrade is deleting all the files in their /Documents and /Pictures and /Music folder. The upgrade is outright deleting them.
If that happens to you, the first thing to do is: DO NOTHING. The items have been deleted, but not destructively, so it's all still there to be recovered.
More information and a process for recovery here: https://www.computerworld.com/article/3310610/microsoft-windows/did-you-upgrade-to-win10-1809-and-lose-all-of-your-documents-and-pictures-theres-a-fix-for-that.html
Problem is that these folders are on the system drive, so with the activity there usually is there there is a risk that some of the files have been overwritten already.
holy crap I am glad I am on Win7
Windows 10 didn't delete anything in my Documents folder (I've done many Windows 10 upgrades now) and it wouldn't unless I said I wanted to new install instead of upgrade so those with that problem most likely chose the wrong option when prompted. It also gives the option to keep old file in Documents and installed programs and such too.
My Documents folder is on D not C so maybe that's the reason in this latest problem.
The rollout of this update has been stopped due to the issue of users losing files and MS is investigating the situation. They said if you have already manually downloaded this update you should wait until the update is released to install. My last windows update is still version 1803.
Well lucky for me I have nothing of major importance in those folders.. :) Well going through those folders I do not seem to be missing anything, and from watching the Wan Show on youtube Onedrive seems to also be part of the problem..
Yeah, I haven't had any issues so far. I'm guessing it's limited to certain configurations. And yeah, if it involves Onedrive then that might explain why I don't have any issues. There's a law on my computer network that says something like "Cloud stuff is evil, and no computer on this network will ever intentionally use anything in the cloud to store important (or even unimportant) stuff. Ever."
But this is yet one more indication that the stuff you really need to worry about is not viruses and malware, but people who actually develop the software messing up and causing worse problems, since they have the real control over the software. The list goes on and on of "legit" companies making huge mistakes that cause havoc that either releases your private info to the world, or messes up your computer, or in this case deletes important info, etc. And we're supposed to give them even more control by putting our stuff on their cloud? No thanks.
Yeah when it comes to cloud based services I steer well clear.. Is why I have 7, 1 to 2 TB external drives as well as a 4 TB Synology Nas drive..
Being on any particular OS, or version doesn't protect you; what does, is a healthy dose of scepticism about new releases, and pre-planning and thought.
