Is it just me or do HD morphs take longer to render? And do they take more resources to use them verses similar non-HD morphs?

That is exactly what they do; they increase the complexity of the surface geometry which takes more time and computing to render. They are great for really close up images but wasted in an image of a full torso, for example.
One reason I returned two HD characters I recently got because I feel like since there was no non-HD option my computer could not handle doing too many renders with the HD characters. I am a little upset, but I found some non-HD characters that were already in my content and were better for my needs which include not being HD.
I think for your purposes, the HD versions aren't useful. If you can fit two characters in a scene then it is too far away to see the nuance of the HD morphs. On the other hand, if you were rendering a hand cupping a butterfly for example, the Hd version would shine.... It is like getting a 50" 4K tv and sitting three feet aw... a waste of money...
You can make any HD morphed figure non HD by setting the rendering Sub-d level to 1, also check all surfaces for displacement and zero them out and delete maps.
