Iray vs Reality: Asking for a friend.

One of my BFFs is an ex-Daz'er, and she was the one who made me interested in trying out DS again. Howevz, she hasn't really been using DS regularly since 2012 or so, and she's never used Iray. She likes how it looks in my pictures, and wonders how it compares to the Reality plug-in, which I'm not familiar with. I'm trying to lure her back in, angel so here are a few questions, on her behalf:

1: Is her pre-2012 version of Reality compatible with DS 4.10?

2: Are Iray render times shorter?

3: Will Reality still be the best option to use for pre-Iray textures?

 

Anyone feeling like enlightening us? blush

    1. The old version of Reality is not compatable with DS 4.10

    2. If you friend has an Nvidia video card, preferably something with 4GB of vram or higher, then yes, Iray will be faster.  If not, and she has to render on the CPU than times will be comparable.

    3. DS will convert 3Delight surfaces to iray for rendering but its a rough job only.  But there are a few options in the store to convert older products over to iray so they look better then the automatic conversion.

     

    Moving forward with newer items, everything comes with iray materials and settings now so that means far less or no more messing around with trying to get it to look good.    Also, Iray is integrated in to DS which means no floating windows or changes not updating when surfaces are modified.  You can also spot render in DS to a new window using Iray, just like with 3Delight which means fixing mistakes in renders takes far less time.

    As a former Reality/Lux Render user, i found I had to forget how it worked in order to learn Iray.  Once I did that, it made it a whole lot easier.
