  • The oldest stuff on my list is by Uzilite, but they're DO objects that I only put on there recently when the need arose, so I'm not to worried about them.  After that, it is indeed a Stonemason set: Urban Future 4.  The ones I'm actually worried will disapear are Sugatak's 1954 stuff - small store that rarely goes on sale or has new products.  On the other hand, I don't really NEED them either.

This thread encouraged me to do a much needed purge of my wishlist. It was in the mid 600s, now down to mid 200s. Still could probably use jettisonning some more, but I'll call it for now.

I mean, really, if I haven't found it a priority to get 10 year old content by now, it's unlikely to happen ever.

I cut the prices to as low as Daz would allow before retiring the content...

which reminds me.I must be due another cull

Please give us a heads-up if you can, discounts or not!   : )

I got the wall clock freebie so I can accurately watch the clock before the next set of products are purged.

    Until, of course, tomorrow comes!

    Okay, THIS reason I understand.

Still, for a customer, these all look the same. "I wanted to buy something, and I no longer can."

Keep in mind that buying the products instead of wishlisting them will help keep them from being culled.

And that's sometimes how the digital marketplace works. You'll miss the opportunity to get something. No store is obligated to let you know that they are removing products or closing down a vendor.

Because you're not obligated doesn't mean that you can't do it. And stores that listen to customer's requests are generally more popular which shows on the bottom line.

Maybe, but I would be worried about the health of a company when they start worrying about 30-79 clearance cent sales.

I'm still not sure where you're getting this 30-79 cents from. I personally mentioned 50% off on $30+ products, others have mentioned that they would buy these ever at full price. Nobody is talking about 30 cents here. If anything, we're talking about higher prices than what Daz gives during other sales.

    Yep.

  • I actually have tried guessing and buying before the PA sale last year and this year and both times predicted wrong

things I thought nobody would buy still remain and some really cool stuff went

I can only buy so much I have over 9K in my product library already in DIM

    This.

I do understand all the reasons why someone can't buy a product at a certain time, but this is the bottom line. Buying the product shows it has worth to both the creator/store and keeps it around.

I used to have about 200 items on my wishlist - then it got whacked by a glitch (this was early on this version of the store software). I didn't bother to rebuild.

Now I go through the list at least once a month; anything that's been on the list over a year gets dropped. If the list gets over 30 items, I purge the ones least likely to get purchased.

I just purged my wishlist down to 40 items. I figured I wasn't ever going to use Generation 3 items and some of the female items since I mostly render males.

"I speculate that announcing removal of items would take away sales from new items, that's why they don't do it."

I speculate that your speculation is absolutely correct.

My completely, non scientific, anecdotal observation  of the commercial product market ,makes me suspect that companies
seem to strongly prefer that you buy their newest products so that they can continue to sell you more products  after that where the "newness"is a major factor in its appeal.

This helps to eliminate the phenomenon of having to "compete" with older versions of your own product line in addtion to your external competitors in the same consumer space.

Poser  has suffered greatly from this as many users simply chose to forego buying the upgrades if they felt the new features did not justify the upgrade pricing.

The evidence seems to suggest that too much focus on older products may actually mitigate their intended disposability in the minds of your customers  resulting in market stagnation.

Planned obsolecense has always been a strategy for maintaining sales volume.

    Their plans, not mine.

I find not following the herd saves me cash. Of couse, sometimes I'm just another cow/deer/sheep etc. :)

Yeah, I got nervous and picked up one of Sugatak's 1954 series I have plans for, just in case.  Love to see more items from this PA.

  • I have over 3000 items in my wishlist ... from generations 2 through 8 ... yes I do work with them all (well, maybe not 2 much) ... this thread is scaring me ... but I cannot do anything as I used up more than my current budget getting animation stuff early in the sale. And yes, I would like some Sugatak items as well.

And as others have said, if you haven't had the money to buy a product in the last 10 years, it seems extremely likely that you aren't going to in the next 10.

Many of us haven't been here nearly that long, and there are more and more people discovering Daz Studio and this site all the time. I'm finding stuff every week that I never knew existed and putting it on my wish list. Just because something is older doesn't mean that it's not new to some of us and it doesn't mean it's been on our wishlist for ages.

I have a robust wishlist too - and I use a lot of the older content I get. I love converting old stuff to newer looking Iray and dForce stuff. I find it to be a lot of fun - like doing a product makeover. lol Some of the older 3DL stuff has "great bones" and often times the mats aren't bad. All they need is some TLC. Making them look nice in Iray and seeing the difference from when you started to how it looks after you worked on the surfaces and settings can be satisfying.

  • Well, on the subject of products disappearing that you hadn't bought yet... there are things I have on my wishlist that are there because somewhere down the road I know I'll need them for a particular, planned project, but right now I'm focussing on another, nearer-term, planned project.  For instance, at the moment I'm more focussed on present-day stuff, but do have plans to do a small bit of fantasy-world stuff... and in particular also have bigger plans to do space-adventure and space-opera stuff, so had been slowly accumulating certain series of futuristic stuff in groups of 2 or 4 at a time when I had some spare money for that.... so I'm a mite bothered having just found out that, so I gather, all the Dystopian City Blocks stuff has apparently gone.  I'd been slowly progressing through those, buying a few at a time, progressing through them set 1 forward, intending to have the entire collection by the time I finally sat down ready to do all that space-opera stuff.  I really liked the later sets, since those looked so much more space-opera than the earlier numbered sets did, and was looking forward to getting those, since those designs were my favorite...  but it simply never occurred to me that they'd one day soon just go WHOOMPH, or I'd have picked up the more fun-and-fanciful looking ones FIRST and picked up the lower-number more-mundane-ish-but-still-futuristic ones later.  oO

It would have been nice to know about this before they disappeared. Looks like many of us had wishlisted items from them that we would have picked up if we knew they were going to be removed from the store.

I know! It would be great if Daz actually communcated with buyers and advertised sales in advance and gave warnings about PAs/products being dropped.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

Sure, Diva, but I was referring specifically to the folks saying that they’ve had this stuff wishlisted for a long time, and have thousand+ item wishlists.

Having had a low wage job for longer than I've known Daz, plus 3 other hobbies (video games, warhammer and computers) and 2 other sites for DS stuff, my budget is quite small and has to rotate around.

Like the Aeon Soul last chance sale at RDNA, I was able to by-pass the other hobbies and concentrate on those items because I knew those items I wanted were not going to be there.

If I knew about shelved items here, I would stop my spending at other places and concentrate on getting the stuff I know would not be available later. And yes, no actual sale needed. If I knew they would be gone for good, I'd happily pay full price.

I was just wondering, I bought Night World Fallen last week. Does anyone know how old that item/product is?

  • A3 and V4 characters I'm interested in didn't go on sale today, so I'm a little torn. Should I just take the plunge and buy them at full price on the off chance they'll be purged in the very near future? I usually allow myself such luxuries on Christmas and my birthday. Still kicking myself for not picking up Digital I Design's Whale Shark, though.

Warhammer! oh my, that's an expensive one there. smiley Me and my son played Fantasy and 40K  for quite a while. We finally quit as my son doesn't have time for dad anymore, has his own family now and working. cheeky Getting ready to sell all my 40k stuff on ebay.
I remember that Aeon Soul sale. It was nice of them to offer a last chance. I unfortunately spent around $95 but I got everything else I wanted.

Yeah, ebay's saved my budget many of times with that one. Most recently I picked up 5 terminators and a dread for $50, half what I would have paid through GW. And 2 landraiders for $70, that's another BOGO deal :)

  • As Chip and Cookie clothes are reduced now, I think I get them some wardrobe before these items disappear as well. Sorry, PAs, but with DAZ culling older items I will buy them first, your newer stuff will have to wait.
