If I run out of fish food, we have more problems than just the fish food. I have enough fish food to last till end of the year and probably some more still. It would be flooding probably ruining all my fish food, but hope it does not flood.
Well, with today's forecast track those of us in the northern parts of North Carolina (including the Outer Banks where I am) can breath a bit easier but it looks like those in the southern part of the state especially near Wilmington may be in for a very bad time. Florence is now predicted to stall there for a day or more and even well inland can expect heavy rains and severe flooding.
Is the fish food in a sealed container ? If you are still worried about it getting wet put the container in a zip lock bag
While I am glad hurricanes give more warnings ten an earth quake or tornado I'm really hating the whole OMG!!!! Stress factor before knowing where it's going .....
Maybe I'm old-fashioned or weird. People shouldn't wait for the last minute to get ready for a hurricane or bad weather. Everyone should have a ready supply of non-perishable food that doesn't require gas or electricity to prepare. An example is Hormel Compleat meals. They're all cooked, and preserved. You don't need to put them in the refrigerator. You could just eat them out of the package. They're in a cardboard package. You could buy a case of bottled water, and keep it in your cupboard, closet, whatever.
I stay away from candles. I prefer to get flashlights or those electric lanterns, etc. Put the flashlights in some handy places like near the entrance to your home or apartment, in your bedroom, anywhere you're likely to be when the power goes out. Keep fresh batteries on hand. I use rechargeable batteries exclusively. I usually have some in the charger. Keep your cellphone charged up. If you have a landline phone, it will likely work unless the phone lines go down.
Think ahead. If you go out at the last minute, you're run into crowds, and stuff will probably sell out fast.
You might want to keep a "go bag" that has some clean clothes, some cash, and maybe valuable documents. Keep any paper documents, including cash, in a ziplock freezer bag to keep things dry. You might also want to be sure and have a phonebook or something with all your contacts listed. You could even buy a second cellphone for emergencies. You might consider getting a walkie talkie to communicate if the cellphone service goes out.
You can also change the message on your voice mail to let people know how you are doing EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO SIGNAL that way they can call get your voice mail and get a update
How do I change it if I have no signal?
the phone will record it is what I was told .......and you didn't need a signal .......guess we will find out if it's true or not .
Do we have any DAZites / forumites in the Wilmington, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC area? Things are looking very dire there and I hope they have all evacuated to safety.
My daughter is in Lumberton, NC about 75 miles inland from there; but she can't evacuate because both she and her husband are required to work at the shelter.
You change it before the signal is lost at your end and it's stored in multiple secure business locations so then that others that are not in the location(s) that have lost signal(s)s can still reach your voice mail with the new introduction message saying you have traveled, say to, "Pittsburgh, PA to ride out the storm safely".
Hope all of you in the path of this stay safe. Thinking of you all.
I hope everyone who can get out does that - please don't take any chances.
I hope those who can't get out are stocking up with plenty of food and water.
Please take care of yourselves, stay safe, you guys!
I filled up the bathtub with water. Why is that recommended?
Just in case you lose power you can use the water in the bath tub to flush the toilet
I'd have to go buy a bathtub. I guess I could put a 30 gallon trash can in the shower ;)
Water for washing your face, water for flushing the toilet, and if the tub was thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned and disinfected it could be used for drinking water and cooking water. People can survive without food for two weeks, people can die from lack of water within a few days. And it's nice to be able to wash the sweat from your face, underarms, neck and crotch instead of stinking until the power comes back on.
Me too I've got a 2 gallon jug filled and I've got a couple of buckets to catch rain water in .Got a bunch of smaller jugs with water for drinking ,and rain water can be used for washing up
Yes, you can use a large trash can in the shower! Buy a clean one and save it for that purpose. Some are not really water tight. We generally line it with a large leaf-type trash bag for added water tightness and cleanliness. We have a large shower, so it fits easily. We put the cover on the trash can, to keep the rest of the water clean, while we use a sprinkler can full of it to "shower".
Watching the live Webcams from Wrightsville to Outer Banks. Found a couple live cams near my cousin's place. Does not look too bad so far.
Not too bad here on the Outer Banks yet. Wind is about 35 mph from the east, Waves were up to 22 feet earlier in the day but have actually decreased to about 16 feet. You can monitor some of the ocean conditions at Nags Head here: http://www.ncaquariums.com/jennettes-pier-current-conditions Route 12 between Oregon Inlet and Hatteras has been severely overwashed and there is the possibility of forming a new inlet.
However, with the current projected path the worst impacts will be farther south near Wilmington and possibly from Topsail Beach, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC. While the winds have diminished to a catagory 2 hurricane, the size of the wind field and the very slow expected movement still make this a very dire storm.
I always heard it was the best place to hide in your house if a tornado hit if you don't have a tornado shelter or basement. You're supposed to laydown in the bathtub with a matress pulled over the bathtub. I'm guess a twin size matress if you have one.
I am okay. Weather is not very good here.
Good to hear you are doing OK.
So far so good high winds lots of rain ......
Wishing you continued safety!
We have several large (5 gallon) jugs we fill up instead of the tub whenever a storm is about to hit. It's for in case the city water supply gets contaminated by the flood water, so you can wash up and not use the dirty water. If the container is clean enough you can also use it for drinking.
Stay safe everyone!
Antman ,Charlie Judge you guys okay? got power ?
Got some brownouts and home internet went down a bit. Other than that I am fine.
Good to hear Miss Bad Wolf
I feel like going to bed early because this storm stuff is wearing me down.
