What happened to Ryuu?

I was thinking of getting Ryuu for m4 or m5, but it seems to be gone from the store (I get a 404 not found). Does anyone know anything?

    I'm sorry to hear that, especially since there doesn't seem to be any product for newer figures that replaces it.

    No it was 79 cents for that one indecision so It needed to go regardless..  I won't be doing ethnic only products because they no longer sell enough to bother.

    That said, M3D Martin shapes (as well as some of my other products) have asian morphs included that have way better bending morphs than those released from M5.. and you can use any skin you wish. This uses the Redzstudio's Bane skin from Rendo:

    Note my products from Genesis 3 and later have the better bending of all the male products because they actually include jcms to help with bending. Smay and Deepsea are the only others I know that bother with JCMs because of the unique shapes they use on the males. You see the difference when the pose.

    Nice render! Doesn't look much like Ryuu, though. :-) I'd certainly like good morphs, but at least there seems to be a few options there. Less so for a good, darker east-asian skin. Most asian figures seem to have this very light, almost porcelain-perfect skin. (I know I'm in the minority among customers with my current project, which mainly needs middle-aged and/or weathered male, non-caucasian characters. So no martial arts guy who looks like a model, in other words :-).)  Perhaps a skin for some other ethnicity might work, but it's of course easiest to judge a product when it's morphs and skin in one. I'm on a budged, alas, so products that require me to purchase a lot of other products before I can use them (like Michael 8, say, which I don't have; I have yet to buy anything for g8), are a much tougher sell for me.

    Out of curiousity, is there some cost related to keeping older content available? I realize 79 cents isn't a lot (I thought PAs got half the list price per sale?), so I understand if you want to remove it if there's some effort involved. But otherwise, since the product was already ready, it seems like free money? You would've gotten my 79 cents, at least. ;-)

    Minimum amount that Daz will write me a check for is $50. The question would be how long would it take to get that minimum from 50-80 cent sales every few months. I would be waiting months until I see that money... just easier to purge it... waiting months for 79 cent sales to add up to a check makes no sense. Those items have had their run and much better morphs have been replaced in my store since I went solo.  I don't have my store open to make 79 cent sales, if that's ever the complete case, i'll just close my store and go back to giving muscle boys backrubs in VIP laugh.

    Side note: I fought those material settings to make Ryuu look good because parts of him was sunburned.. No asian really looks like that unless they're in the sun way too much, so I won't use that skin again. You could get similar results by playing with the material settings like I did.

    The characters in my project live in the desert, so it was a good look for me. :-) (Though of course I don't know how it would look once I would start to convert it to iray etc., but I liked the promo images.) I wish there had been a warning before it was removed. I found the other thread now where this was discussed, and for me it was not a matter of keeping it in my wishlist for years--I just added it last week as I began to take stock of what I would need for this character.

    I won't rehash anything in the other thread, aside from saying after about 8+ years those initial products that were in my store have ran their course and been on sale many times. Considering they were on sale for about 50% off a few weeks ago with the release of my last product, there would have been no desire on my part to give notification or discount them any further because the sales told me exactly why they've ran their course in the store. I've seen in the past how those notification threads go, so you won't see those threads from me. I won't force people to buy my products even with a notification thread, and I've been known to remove products myself if I don't see them selling... even items that been in the store for only a few weeks. If those items don't hold value in the store to be sold regularly, there's no point to them being in the store.. and I put far to much work into those sets to steeply discount them. I'm not concerned with the culled items, and they'll live on in my older renders that i've made.

    I understand. Poor timing for me, I guess. If i'd started my project last month, I'd have gotten everything I wanted. :-)

    I'm so glad I got him a couple of months ago, and the asian male body and head morphs are superbyes. Here I have dialed in some of those morphs, and IIRC that's the Ryuu skin with some tweaks:

    Damn, I almost bought Ryu but at the last minute didn't as I already have a lot of pretty good asian morphs for M5 via the Oppa Oppa stuff and I had a pretty pricey cart at the time, so I trimmed.  Figured I could wait, and now it seems I've missed out forever, sad they don't give us a 'last chance clearance' notification for stuff like this.  Still I'm glad I've got a lot of Male-M3dia's other male morph sets for M5, I really feel he gives a *lot* of bang for the buck for his products, it's not just a single character but like 10 head and 10 body morphs, which gives a huge amount of variance and usefulness.

    Just noticed that Santo (Santos? can't remember exactly) is gone too, probably same reason I guess.  Although he was geared toward latin ethnicity, there was at least one of the morphs in the promo pics that looked very asian to me, could have also been useful.  I suppose it's a reminder that sometimes it's just best to jump on the deal when its there, because it might not come up again.

    In fairness though, I didn't really think they'd be trimming out any of the Genesis1 stuff yet, that's all fairly recent in the grand scheme of things, and there's till lots of M3/V3 stuff even still in the store, much less the M4/V4 stuff which is so prolific.

    I missed Santo too, but at least I got Ryuu mostly because I love his tattoo. I have a couple of other of Male-M3dia's characters too. I guess this means I have to hurry up and buy up all the old items, even Genesis 1 items that I like. Trim my wishlist during this sale event.

    Also Male-M3dia, if you're still reading the comments on this post, let me just say I appreciate the work you put into your wonderful characters. I don't care if they don't come with skins, I actually prefer to purchase morph-only products. Your guys look great no matter what skins they're using.

    No they only write checks only for monthly sales greater than $50. So when I put out a new product, I can clear that minimum. A few 79 cent sales on a product honestly does nothing but delay a check until I actually put a product out, thus I'm not bothered by a product being culled that only bring in less than $10 a month. As a vendor, I need to keep my library fresh with new content everyone buys, things that rarely sell does not accomplish this goal.. so culling them makes sense.

    Thank you. To be honest, the morph only products end up earning me more than the ones with skins.. that's why I do them.

For me, finding interesting old characters, updating them to a Genesis 2 or 3 can be kind of a fun thing.

    There should be a YouTube channel that takes old 3D models and gives them new tricks. It would be sort of like American Pickers but with Daz models. I think it was Jepe that made some posts with old M4 models updated to Iray and such. They looked pretty fantastic, and that's a cool way to promote old stuff.

    As someone who occasionally has to deal with digital assets, I am sure that just the tax and logistical management makes it impractical to carry everthing forever.  It happens.... you miss that sale, the movie sells out, the fruit is out of season, and you move on...

    But ... logically, the lighter the skin gets the closer together the skin tones would be. And there's a range even with darker skin. (Which can lead to ... interesting times with more recent sensor-activated hand dryers.)

    Anyway, I'm glad I have both Ryuu (and both of Ryuu, for that matter) and Wynn. I was able to get the Ryuu texture to work OK in Iray, I think, but I did have to shove his reflectance tint to a stronger blue to keep him from going too orange. I need to go back and tinker with Wynn again, I think.

    And it's interesting to hear how some of the business aspects work.

    I will admit to being surprised at some of the things that do well enough to keep around, and the ones that don't. But then, that's why there's a variety of stuff around, because someone will want things that others don't need.

    Again the product ran its course over 8 years, so there are better products since then and we've learned much more about making products as well. I'm not interested in trying to sell old tech for pennies, when my newer items sell much more than that. At the end of the day, my store is supposed to make money and when it doesn't is when my store is closed. That's how business is run. Nothing mean or nefarious, that what a marketplace does so I can't focus on things that no longer sell. I'm sure over time the other stuff will culled as one of my partners no longer does the skins so any products by him will fall from the store as well going into G3... but that still won't affect my sales as my solo products makes my monthly pay.

    Yes JSGraphics spent a long time working on that tattoo. And he did it whole thing twice for M4 and M5. Johan for M5 has an arm length tattoo as well.

    It's really unfair to remove products without warning the consumers and letting them a last chance to purchase what they need.

    Daz 3D Shop need a clearance system.

    I liked the way Lyoness gave customers warning and a special sale when she was retiring alot of her V4 girls. I bought a harem of them and have them locked in my runtime prison.

    I'll have to disagree on this. Honestly it's a matter of priority, no one needs to be goaded or coerced into buying something they didn't want prior to it being removed.

    That's not really accurate though--some of us did want it prior to it being suddenly removed. For myself, I was only trying to decide whether to get the m4 or m5 version before buying. I had no idea I was on a deadline.

    By the by, I just had a chat with a colleague today from China who looks very like Ryuu (minus the tattoos), so the look is out there. :-)
