I believe most new males are created by exporting the base Genesis 8 Male to a sculpting tool, like ZBrush. Only established PAs have access to the tool to create HD morphs for Daz Studio. But you can can create normal maps to add detail. Then JCMs and MCMs are created to improve bending and posing. Many of the skins are created from photo references or merchant resources. I believe it is a huge amount of work!
If you are not happy with the released characters "out of the box", have you tried dialing morphs to create a character for your use inside Daz Studio? There are a lot of morph packs available, besides just combining the characters themselves to various degrees.
Personally, I've been thrilled with the recent Genesis 8 male characters that have been released. Edward, Ollie, Floyd, have given us something new that we hadn't seen in Genesis 3. Harrison is a recently released PA male, and I think he is a great looking guy (not older or quirky like ollie and Floyd). That said, I welcome your future contributions!

Genesis 3 exists already for a longer time. Genesis 8's birthday is just one year ago. Michael 4 has a huge amount of stuff accumulated within 10 years. Everything needs a bit of time and G8 is really flexible.
To say there are no real men around is a bit risky. Anyway many of them hit my taste. Look for example at the latest release by FaberInc. Novak.

While not official characters, the recently released Novak and the males by Emrys https://www.daz3d.com/emrys are certainly of a really high quality, with lots of character, to match the "official" pro characters.
