I wish daz would clean this up.

    I barely started using DAZ 3D one month ago, and I'm already wasting a lot of time searching for stuff, and not having a clue where it could be. I don't dare to think how much of a pain it must be when you've accumulated years of files.

    Dont let it get to you.  I recommend learning to sort your content now while your new instead of letting it balloon into a decades worth of mess.

    I second this.  Figure out how you want to organize it now, and then keep it up to date every time you purchase something.  You will be very glad you did

    From all the complaining, it sounds like a lot of people don't realize they can move content anywhere they want within the root content path and Studio will recognize it the next time the program is opened. I do this all the time (use folder structure as categories, rather than create categories w/i Studio.)

    What do you mean by 'use folder structure as categories'? Using the default categories in the 'content library' pane?

    I've created a 'Daz-Props' Folder inside Props, with 'Medieval' 'Fantasy' 'Sci Fi' folders under it. Inside those, links to the Product folders I want to be able to find under the category heading.

    I've also linked 'Daz-Props' into Environments for when I'm up there anyway.

    Using a link (used to be called 'shortcuts' prior to Windows 7 and not very useful, but better now) means the product is still in the original location so it doesn't break the Smart db.

    You can link a file or folder to multiple locations, so you can have the product 'filed' under as many categories as you want.

    Well, I didn't try to do that yet, because I'm afraid of messing up with the files. I assume that I can freely copy/paste files from the main library in windows, and that DAZ will be able to find them. And also that I can put the same item in any number of sub folders. For instance, if I have blue shoes for G3 females made by Doe, I can copy it "People/G3/female", "clothes", "blue things" and "Doe's products"?

    I'm wondering however if I can copy stuff from one main folder to another. In particular, there's a "Poser" folder. I'm not sure if I can copy elements from this folder to "Daz 3d library" folders, or if there's something specific about these files that requires them to be in the Poser folder to be usable.

    I found a script on another content site that offers to convert Poser folders to be categorized for DS.

  • I still feel that Categories and Smart Content deviate from my wish just to Make Art.

    Doesn't help when products are put in the wrong categories in 'Smart Content'

    Just found Liquid Halo on Sky 16 for Genesis & the Recently released Dark-Space outfit under Figures->Mechanical

    While more than slightly sci-fi, these clothing items certainly don't fit in with Robot figures. And there are people under errant category headings away from the rest like they've been consigned to a naughty step and ostracised.

    It's not fixing what was wrong with regular content, but carrying the confusion over.

    No, can't copy files from the Poser runtimes to the Daz ones - If you look at the contents of the Poser Runtime folders, you'll see they are in a different format.

    Character folder = .cr2

    Hair = .hr2

    Pose = .pz2

    Face = .fc2

    etc.

    Those won't show up in the Daz side, nor the Daz file formats in the legacy Poser side.

    You can load items and Save as Prop/Asset though, to transfer them to the Daz side.

    Leave people on tenterhooks much?

    Don't post a link, but at least give a name so we can all go look for it.

    The advantage of categories is that they don't move any files. You can create categories and move them around as much as you like and the actual files stay where they are. Since categories are just references to the originals (sort of like shortcuts but done using a database) if you update the content you don't have to update the categeries, they will now be pointing to the updated files.

    I think that as long as you leave the "data" and "Runtime" folders as they are you can copy or move other stuff around and create whatever nested directory structure you want. The problem with this approach is that if you use Install Manager it will put updates into their default locations and you will have to move or replace the files again, and if you do manual updates you will have to remember where you put the files last time. It will probably also break Smart Content, but I don't know for sure since I never use it.

    The Runtime folder is another story. Poser content has to be in there, Studio won't recognise it outside of Runtime and it won't recognise Studio content inside Runtime.

    Runtilme/Libraries contains the actual content, all the other files are support files and you shouldn't move them. You can move stuff around in Runtime/Libraries and you can create subdirectories. Everything has to be in one of the standard sub-folders Camera, Character, Face, Hair, Hand, Light, Materials, Pose, Props or Scene. In old versions of Poser you had to have each type of content in the right main folder but now don't have to. I put materials into subfolders under the clothes thehy are for, move things around and it works in Poser 11 and Studio, but if you are not using Poser it is easier just to use categories.
