Rim Light Rig Iray - what causes the lights to show up as white discs in the render?

I have two RLR's (Spotlight rigs), one focusing on each lion.  What causes a couple of the spotlights to show up as white discs?  Is it because the lights are facing the camera?

What can I do to fix this?

    Does it have mesh lights?

Yes it does, but I haven't tried those yet. I thought this might be an issue with spotlights in general, but if it is exclusive to RLR, then I need to post my questions in Marshian's commercial thread.

The is known issue when a light with geometry is seen through transparencies like hair.

In the details of the product page, Marshian recommends "removing any texture maps from the glossy channels." Having said that, I posted a similar issue on page 2 of the commercial thread where some of the planes were showing up in the render. Best I could do to avoid it was angle the rig off to the side.

  • if it's an actual photometric spotlight couldn't you change the light geometry from Disk to Point? Or maybe make it's Height/Width smaller? You may wind up having to make the lights either brighter or darker, but it won't show up in the render.

The rig is made up of I think 12 spotlights, so I'm wondering if changing them to point will create such dark, sharp shadows that it would be difficult to get the effects like in the promos.

Just to note that this effect doesn't always happen.  I've seen it about 3 times now.  I have changed the lumins, reducing them on the white lion and increasing them on the black one.
