have I properly backed-up my content data base?

I've run the Export User Data and have backed up my Daz 3D folder in Application Data which is where the .dsx files are....is that enough to prevent having to reinstall everything in case of a problem.....that is of course if the actual content is not disturbed.

another thing I'm wondering about is do I need to back-up the Content Management Service folder which is something I have done in the past however I forget it's location....I don't use Smart Content ....is that what the Content Management Service is for?

thanks

  • The Content Management Service is everything database-related, not just Smart Content (though Smart Content is an aspect of it). In pronciple all you need is the content and the exported user-data, you just reimport metadata to rebuild the database, but backing up the %AppData%/Daz 3d/cms/contentCluster folder will give you the actual database complete, without needing to reimport anything. I'd think it prudent to do both - the database is more convenient, the exported data is insurance against corruption.

From my very recent experience, it is much quicker to just reinstall everything with DIM. I had to replace my hard drive with a larger one, so I backed up everything DAZ related first, then replaced the drive and set it up with Win10 and my anti-virus software, then I copied all my DAZ folders {Program Files, Program Files (x86), plus both sets of User files} and  and related bits onto the new drive, before installing Studio. Only to find that Studio showed the products in the folders as greyed out, so... 70+ hours of reinstalling via the "Install" tab inside Studio, and it still did not show everything that showed as installed in DIM - BUT all my non-Daz3D content was recognised just fine. Then I bit the bullet and uninstalled (with DIM) everything that DIM said was installed, and reinstalled, which took less than nine hours for 4700 products. All told, it took me six days to get to where I can now access all my content, when I could have just used DIM in one day.

Short answer: it's simpler and faster just to use DIM and doesn't waste disk space and time with backing up CMS.
