OT: Clear the Shelters

3Diva3Diva Posts: 11,970

Just a reminder that this weekend is Clear the Shelters in many areas. I hope that those who are able to adopt a shelter animal can make the time to bring an animal in need of love into your family. There are so many good dogs and cats wasting away in the shelters. Too many are living a miserable existence in small cages and get very little exercise or attention. Please, if you have the time consider adopting one of these little guys - they just need a chance at a new life. And if you have the time please spread the word and talk to friends and family members about adopting a shelter animal.

    She's gorgeous @CrisPalomino smiley

I adopted my 7 year old rescue cat Molly (hence the forum name) two years ago. She's a real joy but can be a little naughty at times, lol. She loves knocking my reading glasses and pens onto the floor.

Mine I got 2 for the price of 1 because it was a small shelter, affiliated to a larger group, and they were about to close down. My two were an awkward age, too old to be appealing as kittens, but not yet old enough to be considered as adult cats.  They were around 7 months old. They are now 7 years and still giving me great companionship.
this is them when they first arrived.

Just adopted Tuesday. Here’s my little sweetie Sparkle. There were so many fantastic pets at the shelter. It was difficult to believe she’d been there 10 days.

I'm loving seeing all the photos of everyone's pets. This is a rare photo of Molly where she isn't a blur as she's guaranteed to move as soon as try to take a photo. She's a proper 'cat in a box'. All cardboard boxes are officially hers :-)

My two as well.  They here the postman at the door, as he uses his scanner to read the bar code and register the parcel as delivered.  They know that sound means new box(es), just as soon as their human removes the rubbish that is inside.   Amazon boxes are the best,  because they have nice paper packing that rustles and is warm and comfortable.   They want to keep every box that arrives, even when they don't use tham.  When they see me start to flatten boxes to put out for recycling they rush around reclaiming the ones they need to keep.  It's so funny.

  • Heh Chohole, mine do the exact same thing with the boxes.

Serene Night, congrats on your adorable new addition!

Amazon is her preferred brand too! Lots of lovely shapes and sizes. I bought her a cat bed from Amazon which I ended up giving to our local cat charity. She preferred the box it came in.

...love to adopt a kitteh friend, but the pet deposit where I live is about two thirds of my monthly rent (plus there is a monthly rent supplement).  Also, I only have a small studio flat just north of the city centre where there is lots of traffic (and too many careless and brain dead motorists for my taste) as well as on the edge of a "sketchy" area, so he/she would have to be confined to the indoors.

  • My two kitties, Lucy and Merlin, came from the OC shelter here in SoCal. I'd get another if I had the room! They bring so much love and companionship, and ask for so little in return.

I so agree.  When I lost himself, my significant other, I think it was only these 2 little girls that kept me going for the first little while.

I adopted my current pair of "kitty girls" from a local recue shelter 8 years ago.  They were littermates from a feral momma cat and just weaned. As they were pretty well bonded to each other, I could not bear to separate them so the shelter gave me a break on the adoption fees and they went home with me within the hour.    Since then they have been the best pets I have had the good fortune to share my days with.  They were so tiny that they fit in the same small pet carrier and they rode home on my lap.

They have grown to display two very distinct personalities and are both very affectionate and well behaved cats. One of them usually takes up an entire end of my desk and will bat at my hands with her paws when I am too involved in what I am doing to pet her every few minutes.  The other loves to cuddle close to whichever one of us "makes a lap" for her.  When they are not in cuddle bunny mode, they tend to tear around the house and race each other to the top of the large cat tree in my living room.  My home office is partially taken up by two amazon boxes that they have claimed.

They obviously got a great home. They look simply adorable!

My husband and I adopted a special needs cat with Cerebellar Hypoplasia years ago and just fell in love with him. Unfortunately, he got cancer and only lived for a few years. But those were a happy few years and he brought us so much joy - he definitely gave us a heart for cats and dogs with CH. When he died we decided we'd bring another cat with CH into our home. We looked at several local rescue places and their websites and one had a link to some videos of some of their rescues. When I saw the video of a stumbling clumsy cat I knew right away he had CH and that I wanted to learn more about him. Turns out he had spent 2 years in that shelter, then was adopted and spent a year with the adaptor but after a year they decided to move and brought him back to the shelter, and then he spent another 3 years in the shelter before we found his video. So he spent five out of six years of his life in a shelter. Most people don't know what CH is and don't give animals with CH a chance so he just sat there for years - unwanted, unloved, it breaks my heart how long he spent in the shelter.

Because of his Cerebellar Hypoplasia he stumbles around a bit when he walks and is kind of clumsy but other than that he's a normal cat and he doesn't know he's different. He is family and has been enjoying the "high life" with us and a new life outside of a cage and is able to sit in the sun, get belly rubs, and really enjoy life for perhaps the first time in his life. I highly recommend cats and dogs with CH for those with a bit of patience and a little extra love to give. :)

Shelter pets often give so much more love than they get and can really bring so much richness and joy to our lives.

I have all admiration for anyone who takes on a special needs animal. Due to vet fees and the inability to get my animal to a vet without a lot of inconvenience to others, I am unable to do so. Good for you for having that ability and willingness.

We're full up on cats right, having been adopted a few months ago by Mandelbrot.  (In fact, I'm having to type around her right now.)   We were considering adopting a sweet special needs cat but when they brought Mandie out, she instantly snuggled on my lap and told me to wake her up when it was time for us to go home.  She gave us no choice in the matter.  We always adopt from a shelter and most of the ones near us are quite nice so I feel slightly less bad about not being able to adopt all the kittehs.

We have 4 cats now, 2 named after astronomers (Gallileo and Keppler), 1 named after a mathematician (Mandelbrot), and 1 named after a super villain (Mystique).  Yep, this is a geek household.

This is Mandie looking up at her "older brother" and all-around bad influence Keppler.  (They're not actually related as far as we know.)

I want to adopt but I need to find a better place to live first.

  • If I win the lottery, I'm opening a cat sanctuary on a 15 acre farm and taking every unadopatable cat out of the local shelters and giving them a place to spend their days, free of a small cage. It is my dream.

That's a beautiful dream! :) There definitely is a need for places like that.
