Will more PC Memory improve running of DS scenes?

Hey everyone,

Really quick question. If I double the amount of RAM in my system (currently 16GB), will it improve the running of large scemes in DAZ Studio?  Not render times, I know that's down to the GPU's, I'm talking about actually having a scene open and working on it, moving objects, and such like. I note that on some scenes, I occasionally have to turn elements off or moving is almost impossible!

Thanks in advance

John

If you're already at 16 GB, additional memory probably isn't going to make a huge difference. You're more than likely running into issues with CPU and GPU trying to process it. I have a pretty monster machine myself, but I still have scenes where turning things off is necessary to be able to get the UI to respond quickly enough.

I’ll differ on this. Increasing your cpu ram to 32 GB will have on overall improvement in Studio and pc operations in general. You won’t be using paging to hard drive for larger scenes.

Have you checked your DAZ Studio is hardware accelerated in the viewport (in edit > preferences -> interface) I believe.

My fuzzy recollection is that if you DO run out of system RAM and it dumps to the pagefile.sys, it slows things down immensely. I think I tested that once but it's been awhile. Does anyone have more specifics?

If it's as bad as I seem to recall, and you have a GPU with a decent amount of VRAM, you'll want to upgrade your system RAM. For example, I have a GTX-1080ti and the only way I can fill its VRAM is by loading a scene that takes 30+GB of system RAM, and that equates to a little over 10GB of my 11GB VRAM.

So I think it depends on what GPU you have.

  • There are draw settings that you can reduce to improve the response of the viewport. I'm not sure how much it will help with texture shaded draw style but it makes a big difference if you are using the iray drawstyle.

Ooopppss...sorry I misread your post. You're looking for ways to improve the iray preview?

Here are the settings I use. They made a huge difference for me to speed up the response of Iray preview:

    1. Render Settings/General/Auto Headlamp = Never
    2. Draw Settings/Drawing/Response Threshold (msec) = 5000
    3. Draw Settings/Drawing/Inactive Viewport Delay = Off
    4. Edit/Preferences/Interface/Display Optimization = Best
    5. Use Perspective View when manipulating, since any Camera view is generally much slower, especially if you have a light parented to the camera like a headlamp
    6. Avoid using "Point At" if you want your character's eyes to point at the camera. That will slow the camera view manipulation a lot.
