Iray does need a LOT of light to render well. It sould check your lighting setup. Most lights when you add them have way too few lumens configured for them. It's not uncommon to have to increase the lumen strenght of a light to 100,000 or more.
How are you lighting the scene? Is it in an enclosed space?
I am using sunlight as my lighting.
with spot light i suggest 150.000 to 250.000
- use 'ON'no 'AUTOMATIC'
or use "emissive"
How are you controlling the position of the sun?
The Sun is preset with whichever time I use. I am using https://www.daz3d.com/sunlight and https://www.daz3d.com/sunlight-ds for my sun.
The first link is a product for Poser, Poser lights don't work in DS.
The second product is for DS but they are lights for 3dl so don't work with Iray.
The sets wont work but there are 32 HDRI in the Poser one that you can use in the Iray Environment Dome. If you have the Light Dome from the set loaded it will block any light from the Iray Dome so you will need to delete that. To load the HDRI into the Environment Dome click on the small map icon and look for the HDRI that was used in the original Light Dome diffuse channel and click on it.
Sunlight was a great product until Iray killed it LOL
Iray Worlds can be considered its replacement. I use that for my sunlight lighting.
You can control sun position easily by Creating a Primitive Cone, giving it as few polygons as possible (3 sides) and parenting the sun to it. Tilt the cone, change the sun position and angle relative to the World Center without altering its distance from the center.
However, I do believe you can use Sunlight, so long as you apply an Iray Emmissive to the Sun, and play around with the settings for the Skydome so its texture shows up (if you've got one on it and not just a generic distant-horizon sky gradient).
My renders are now coming out grainy, how do I get rid of the grainy effect?
I use Photoreal render, then in Progressive Rendering tab set Converged ratio up to 98%, Raise Quality to >1 ( I use 5 ) Increase Max Time and Max Samples.
Also make sure you have plenty of light. Render large and then resample the image to a smaller size.
I am sure I only know a small percentage of the possible ways to make a render have higher quality. You have to experiment. Interactive Mode is great for experimenting.
in truth, it's a by product of physically based raytracing rendered as iray.
They will start with a lot of noise and converge more and more with less noise, better reflections and details. Each time iray render a new "iteration", it improves the graininess. You could let it converge for eternity and stop it when you are satisfy with the result, or give limits to iray to attain (in both rendering time, or number of iterations or quality or a mix of these)
But it's a very heavy process. You have to remove any useless geometry for your scene, to be conservative with your materials definitions or how much you're subdividing meshes. Also, for iray, a nvidia gpu (for cuda rendering) will help a LOT for faster rendering. But then the main limit will be GPU main memory.
In short: physically based render can bring beautiful results AND/OR realism, but yes, it's heavy on calculations.
Also, iray is very sensible to lighting. The brighter the scene is, the quicker it is to attain a nice result without to much noise and fireflies.
The darker the scene is, the longuer you have to wait for a not grainy render. In a way, like in photography.
I "help" a little by stopping even if it's still noisy and using noise filtering in Photoshop or similar softwares (Affinity Photo for example). You can loose some details, but sometimes, it's enough to have a decent result without waiting much longuer for a cleaner render.
