  • I can't remember if I mentioned this before. I'm using 3DL because it's easier for my iMac to handle.

Yeah, Iray doesn't agree with my MacBook Pro either. It takes me forever to get anything decent via Iray. 3DL and pwToon for this Mac user, for now!

Yeah, Apple really dropped the ball when they decided we didn't need the ability to upgrade our Macs with more memory and a better video card, etc.

Quick question just to be sure - are you rendering in Iray or 3DL?

pwToon's in 3DL. If I have Iray elements, I use sickleyield's Iray to 3DL converter to help make things easier to apply the pwToon shader to them.

I'm aware.  I'm also aware that Daz defaults to Iray until you tell it otherwise, so there have been times when someone has purchased a 3DL shader and didn't realize it was for 3DL, or didn't realize that Daz was rendering in Iray when they wanted 3DL.  Now, Ron says below that he only uses 3DL, so obviously that isn't the problem.  But I always think it is good to "check to make sure the machine is plugged in" before trying to troubleshoot.

Apple knew what they were doing with regards to upgrades. They are purposefully targetting middle, upper middle, and rich incomes that simply replace there Apple HW the way they upgrade cars and some, homes, for the added safety, entertainment, and technical features. They didn't drop any ball as much as decided $200 HW/SW bundles with 10 year usage via users upgrades is not in their business model. They've consistently moved to lock their HW / SW tighter and tighter making it more secure and more exclusive.

nonesuch00, I see your point. But that also means Apple doesn't suit my every need. Sooner or later I will buy a PC just for DAZ Studio.

BTW, I used Photoshop, the Nix Collection, and Topaz Studio to enhance that image.  Photoshop is the only program that costs.  I pay the lowest sub fee they have which is just below $10 per month.

I have Photoshop CS2.  Couldn't afford any further upgrades.  So far, does what I need plus much more.  Need to actually learn a lot of it.

I have a Mac, and bought Pixelmator about the same time I bought my first Mac (2007). Pixelmator meets all my needs, and is cheaper than Photoshop.

  • having an apple computer doesnt restrict you from using particular GPUs though. You can get an external GPU, and lets not pretend like other manufacterers arent doing that as well where the ram isnt user upgradable on laptops. It IS upgradable on an iMac/Mac Pro. OAN im using an 08 octocore mac pro tower and i'm rendering well enough. I would never dream of rendering anything on a laptop, LOL thats what my threadripper build is for. I actually tried it on my mbPro and BOI the temps were probably in the 80s from the thigh burns LOL.

  • I do with there was some update to VSS, and daz toon shaders that made it better when shading enviroments. I find that theres far too much black.

  • I looked at external GPUs, and they didn't look very good when you consider their price. Apple has made it harder and harder to upgrade their computers. Yes, I can upgrade the memory on my 2013 iMac. But I can't replace the GPU or internal hard drive. Why are people responding to this old thread?

I just picked up pwToon and pw catch on sale.  Do they come with instruction documents?  I'm not home, so I can't check right now.

  • How do I stop getting notices of replies to this thread. I unsubscribed weeks ago. I unsubscribed again yesterday.

what colour is your bookmark star at the top of the page?

  • Chohole, Bookmark? Do you mean the star? That is white. Hey maybe I still get notifications because I started the thread? I soon grew tired of the subject, and returned the product.

You must have "Notify me when people comment on my discussions."  ticked in your notification preferences

  • Chohole, yes I do. This is the only situation where I don't want to receive notifications. Oh well, live and learn.

Will it keep notifying you if you don't respond and check in?  Some forums will send you one notification and if you don't return to the thread, you won't get another email notice...for that thread.  I gave up on emails a long time ago from this forum, though.  I use the "bookmark" feature, and just refresh the main bookmarks page to see if there are new posts.  I was getting flooded with emails form this forum and got tired of it.

I'm getting some weird issues.  Everytime I try to apply the prtoon shaders, surfaces are disappearing.

  • Do you have screenshots? Does it render ok? I haven't had an issue with surfaces disappearing, though if opacity maps are still applied that can look odd in the preview window sometimes.

As an aside, I wish there was an automatic distance adjustor for line width

  • tkdroberttkdrobert Posts: 3,606

For some reason, the opacity is getting set to 30%. I’ll have some more time to experiment with this in the afternoon.  I’ll update if I keep having problems.

I fixed reset the opacity settings to 100 and that fixed the problem.  Here are 2 images I've done with @Crescent's free pwToon shader presets.  Not real satisfied.  Pwtoon is not as intuitive as I hoped but I just started playing with it.  I did some post work in Photoshop,

I have a lot of these older utilities, but wasn't aware they worked with newer versions of DS.  I only used them in like DS 2.3.

There is an update for 4.  You have to install it after the main product using DIM.

  • I got rid of pwToon because it felt like an outdated, unsupported app. I was hoping for something that would give me a one-click way to "dummy down," or "toon" my artwork so it would be easier to render on my iMac.

I'm curious. I left this thread weeks or months ago. Most of my threads are either ignored or die quickly. That doesn't bother me. This one faded away for awhile, but now its back on a frequent basis. Did DAZ have a recent sale that offered pwToon? Maybe they should get smart and retire the thing. It seems to have long ago lost its appeal.

I've been thing about trying it out for awhile.  They had a sale on it this week.  There is a Non-PhotoRealistic thread and several people use pwtoon.  I'm giving it a try.

  • tkdrobert, I decided it wasn't worth my effort or time. I shouldn't need to hunt for info I need on something I just bought. I returned pwtoon, and got a credit. I bought something else which was far more satisfying.

Pwtoon is my favorite fast way to do Toon style.

LineRender9000 and my own Oso Toon are my other favorites; they take a bit more time and effort but get better results.
