3Delight: More than 8 threads anyone?

I'm thinking to jump to a more powerful system, but I got a doubt about the CPU.

In some post in this forum someone said that the 3DLight is limited to 8 threads (4 cores in hyper or simply 8 cores). It's that true?

I would like to get an i7-8700K that has 6 cores and 12 threads, but I need to know if the extra cores and threads will go wasted.

I believe the 8 thread limit refers to the stand alone free version of 3D Delight. I am pretty sure there are no thread limits when rendering with 3DL inside DAZ Studio.

I thought the same, Havos... And you gave me an hint, I'll check their website, maybe there's some info! wink
In the meantime I would like a confirmation from someone who actually owns a 6 or more cores CPU. cheeky

  • The DS version of 3Delight used 8 threads when the free stand-alone was limited to 4. Havos is correct, as far as I know.

  • I've got dual quad cores on my workstation.  I think 3Delight uses all 16 threads, I know Iray does when the vidio card bounces things over there.  I'll run a 3Delight Render tonight, take a look, and get back to you if nobody else does first.

Yes, please! It would be a nice info to add here!
At least we can be sure about it.

IRAY definitely uses all cores/threads (16/32) when dropping to CPU; I don't use 3Delight.

  • And the answer is:  It only used 8 cores when compiling the shaders, it used all 16 when doing the rendering.  Go figure.

...I think a while back I heard the limit was something like 24 or 32 threads for the integrated 3DL in Daz.

    @ Diogenese:

Thanks, Diogenese! That's good news for me! laugh I'm insterested in improving my render times, that:s perfect!

    @ Kyoto Kid

Yes, that's the problem: everyone heard about something but no sure info are available.

Anyway, those numbers are truly interesting but we need "the proof".cheeky

This old thread is one of many but it has more detail. The most I ever recall was someone actually saying they had a Xeon workstation with 32 hyperthreads a few years ago. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/37136/daz-studio-and-multiprocessing/p1

    Thanks Kevin!

They ended arguing on who made the best mathematical calculations on render times, but they confirmed what Diogenese said. laugh

Now the only problem is the  money for the uograde!cheeky
