System ram requirement for a 1080ti?
So like my signature says I have 16Gb of RAM and a 1080ti. So when I render, the most I have been able to use on the 1080ti is around 7 or 8 Gb, beyond that, once RAM memory usage hits around 15Gb, either DS drops to CPU render, DS crashes, or the whole computer freezes. So my question is how much system RAM would I need to fully utilize the 1080ti? I'd hate to buy 32, then find out I needed 48 or something. Oh, and my slots are full, 4Gb x 4, so I'd have to replace them completely.
Although I do have a lot of stuff running, I shut down all the memory hogs, Firefox especially. So when system RAM usage is 15Gb or more, DS is using like 14 of that.

For me, with only my 1080ti running and Optix on, on a machine with 64GB of system RAM, I load a scene that's somewhere around 30+ GB in system RAM, and that translates to a little over 10 GB of VRAM, which is about max on my 1080ti. I'm guessing the sweet spot is somewhere around 30-35GB of system RAM, allowing for maybe 4GB of other stuff using system RAM at the same time.
32, that's not bad. I'm probably going to wait and see if RAM prices come down any. I'll just go back to my old method of rendering a scene in layers and combining them in post work. Thanks.
You could try installing Razer Cortex, its a game optimizer but plays well with Iray and can eliminate background hogs to free up any additional system resources for your renders. I have been using it with a lot of success.
I assume you're talking about freeing up system RAM, not GPU VRAM correct? Generally when I'm running with only the desktop and no apps open, my system RAM usage is only around 4GB or so. I'm curious how much of that can be optimized. Or does it optimize the RAM usage when Studio is open and doing its thing?
