Moonshine's Diner

I got some PC Extravaganza bundles years ago. Moonshine's Diner is one of my favorites. You can get a whole wardrobe of 1950s clothes, poses, etc. I've been struggling for years to make the best use of this scene. I want my cast of characters to hang out here.

Look through the windows. Is there some simple backdrop I can use to improve the view through the windows?

HDRI Haven has dozens of FREE HDRI that you can put on the sky dome of your choice (not sure what render engine you're using).

AllenArt, thanks for your response. I'm not using a Skydome. I'm using 3Delight for a render engine, mostly because my iMac can't really handle iRay.

    Isn't there a skydome(s) for 3Delight?

Yup Cheapskate has a good one up at Share CG another option could be the Cyclorama just need to find a background you want on it or even a primative plane with a picture on it  positioned out side the diner

Here's a link to the World Ball by Cheapskate   http://www.sharecg.com/v/69795/gallery/21/DAZ-Studio/Simple-DAZ-Studio-WorldBall

There is, you just add in an UberEnvironment and set an HDRI image (and then I think enable show dome or something).  It should add it in then just fine.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I've never used a Skydome before. What's that all about?

Likewise Ron. This is a great set I got for less than and buck. I need to dust it off and run it through the RSSY IRay converter and do something with it. There are tons of cheap pose sets for it around. In answer to your questions, yes. There are tons, Are you absolutely set on having it be 3Delight? If so you might try just putting a primatime plane as the backdrop and assigning a google city image from that era.

Slightly OT, but there is an Iray addon pack for it if that's what you were referring to with that Iray convertor > https://www.daz3d.com/moonshines-diner-iray-addon

Jack, I noticed your name in many Moonshine install folders. I consider you one of the experts! Your input is always appreciated. I'm using a 24" iMac with only a 1GB nVidia video card. I've experienced many struggles just trying to maneuver around in some more complex scenes. That's why I'll likely stick to 3Delight until I can afford to buy a PC just to run DAZ Studio. I'm very pleased to see what appears to be new pose packs for a zombie invasion of Moonshine's Diner, etc!

How did you get an NVIDIA card in an iMac??? I ended up having to buy a PC just for DS.

I have a late 2013 iMac that I got for a Birthday present in 2014. Dad and I went into the Apple store in St Paul, MN and got it. I love my iMac. The 1GB nVidia card really isn't good enough to handle really detailed scenes. I need to avoid iRay for now.

Over the years, Apple has had a habit of going back and forth when it comes to nVidia or ATI. My 2007 iMac had a really wimpy 256k nVidia card. I ordered the 2007 iMac directly from Apple.

I'm a bit distressed that I'll eventually need to buy a PC to handle the demands of iRay and DAZ Studio. I need to find the money for that. But my iMac suits every other need I have!

I was checking the Dreamlight website and saw some free backgrounds that might work. Scroll to the bottom of tthe page.

I LOVE my iMac but it did not come with an NVIDIA card. I use it for everything else but DS & VR. I got a good deal on a gaming PC last Black Friday season at New Egg (and a great deal on an Oculus Rift that you can only use on a PC at Best Buy --I'm obsessed with VR!) I really hate Windows but just using it for DS & VR is fine. I think the only website I've visited on the PC is here, I'm so afraid of Windows viruses even though I have Norton.

Thanks again, everyone for your support and suggestions. I've put the Moonshine project on hold for a week or so. I have a few personal challenges in the meantime.

I've been using DAZ products for almost 20 years. I'm still a bumbling amateur!

I've used FirstBastion's 1950's Era Motel as a backdrop for the diner. It's for 3DL and has motel, parking lot, surrounding fields, and skydome.

  • Ron KnightsRon Knights Posts: 2,331

Thanks for the tip. I've added it to my Wish List!

Just to see if it could work.

It's not a backdrop it is a whole set: https://www.daz3d.com/1950-s-era-motel

But of course you could render it first and then use it as backdrop if you wanted to.

Ron you could also take a picture  the next time you go out to eat ,take a picture or the parking lot area around and use it on a primative plane as a backdrop

  • Ron KnightsRon Knights Posts: 2,331

Charlie Judge, thanks. I've added the set to my wishlist. Is the motel an exterior set, or does it include the interiors. carrie58, now that's another good idea.

The motel is primarily exterior, although there are some rudimentary unfurnished interiors such as the office and some rooms

Edit to add a quick out of the box 3DL render of the office interior

Thanks, Charlie. As a rule I only buy scenes that include the interior. I can look for a "backdrop" elsewhere.

nicstt. I switched to Macintosh computers in 2007. I've been delighted ever since. The only reason I consider a PC for DAZ Studio is because Apple doesn't make a computer that can be customized like a PC. However, we are not going to get involved in an "OS War."

I've been using Windows on the internet for hours almost daily for 24 years, as part of my work, on multiple computers. I've had a total of 3 virus infections (last one was over 10 years ago AFAIR), some tricky ones which used some Windows security holes which don't exist anymore, and they didn't manage to do any damage. I think I've used used AV software for the last 20 years which has caught some, but not very often. If you're careful and know what you should not do the risk for getting infected is pretty small, IMO.

Ron, you can get loads of free photographs here https://www.pexels.com/ that are free for commercial and noncommerical use. I use a lot of them from there as backgrounds in my renders. They have lots of categories and some really good photos.

  • Ron KnightsRon Knights Posts: 2,331

melanie, thanks for the link. I'll investigate later. At this point I've decided to concentrate on some simple renders. I have so many characters that I've never used before!
