I am much more familiar with 3Delight, which i still use, but i am trying to use Iray as well. How do i liighten the diffuse channel (i am speaking of this as if it were 3Delight) to make the skin of a figure lighter? So many skins that come with a figure are too dark for my taste. I have tried to fiddle with the diffuse thing on the Iray side but obviously it doesn't work. Anyone know what to do? I am bewildered by all the settings and do not know what they do.

Some artists do the surfaces differently and it all reacts differently to the same light. It's why common surface settings help a lot.
So what would lighten the skin?
The Iray skin will have 3 layers... Base diffuse, metallic flake, top coat.
The diffuse layer itself has several components. The main diffuse channel is one part, but there are translucency channels like the subsurface thing in 3DL.
If all your channels are set to white (255,255,255) plus whatever map, and it's still too dark, then I'd guess that your issue is in the translucency channel.
What to do?
Turn down the translucency map dial to like 30%. Id guess that it's set to 60% or so.
If that translucency map itself is too dark, then that has to be modified, removed, or ignored (turning the dial lower).
A lot of Iray materials will come with stock settings to turn down the Translucency. I almost always choose the lowest and go for lighter skin.
Thank you so much! I will put this to work!
Honestly, when I want to lighten skin in a render, my first thing is to go to translucency and turn it down. That one setting often can have a gigantic impact on making it more lighter.
