This has been rattled at before, but if you were me... would you?

So, I was thinking about adding another video card for rendering speed and currently have a GTX 1070 single FE Card. I found a new card GTX 1070 PNY blower style card for 450.00 Canadian so like 300 USD (I'm a Canuck) and I figured I do know that I will most likely find myself buying a bigger card in future, but am waiting anyway for prices to drop and to be honest, I'm still learning Daz 3d but do use Octane and of course Iray so for me and for now, the 450.00 is a negligible amount of money to increase my render times. I know that both are only 8gb and I'm ok with that since for now, my renders are normally under 8gb. The plan Sam is that when I can justify buying a TI or something bigger I can sell both 1070's to help closely fund 1 1080 ti card where I can spring for a second. But for me, that is a while down the road since my goal is learning to keep scenes optimized which is a good thing and a result of the limit of 8gb that I currently have.
Now, I have read that 1 card over 2 small cards is better and I agree, but 8gb is still enough for my limited renders right now so at this time it's about boosting the render speeds and not so much about having larger scenes yet.
So, even though I'm already doing this and the card is on its way the question stands... for the price of that second card, would you have passed on it, or just do it? Are there really any cons over the minute price tag or do you also see this as a bargain towards better render times?

If the card is on it's way, then it's a moot point. Personally I would stick with one card. Hope it works out for you though.
I use two 1070s as well, started out with one and there is quite a difference. Doubling the core count helps a lot with speed. I think you'll be happy with the results, and at that price it's a steal. I got the second one because I found a shelf full of them at my local Best Buy at $350 USD and haven't regretted it since.
Thanks for the info, I was trying to shed some guilt and build my argument when I tell the other half a delivery is arriving tomorrow for me and to put it in my office ;)
lol, thanks. I do inevitably want a 1080 ti in the future but since I already had a 1070 and the price on the other card was so low I just went for it, now to sell that to the better half.
LOL, the secret is always to purchase something for your other half as well.
Yes, you are correct. Just not Daz stuff... I already have a hole in my wallet ;)
Just tell the other half you can spend half the time rendering and twice the time with them! The purchase wasn't really for you, it was for your relationship.
Well, like you said the $450 is a negligible amount to you, so it shouldn't be a big deal. I overheard a coworker a few years ago talking about how she and her husband were barely getting by month to month, then he spent like $400 in an online game in one night. That was painful just to listen to.
But double the cores should help your render times a lot. Plus you can sit back and see how this new Nvidia release plays out. The 1100 series might be out this month, or it might not. And with all the excess GPUs waiting to be sold, Nvidia may discount the 1000 series, or they may not. I'd say the 1070 was money well spent.
Thanks for the input, I feel good about it now for sure and I'm betting cards will drop when the new series comes.
It always comes down to cost and return on investment VS personal finances. Yeah, obviously a 1080ti would be freakin' sweet, but that's a cool $800-900 right now, and many people cannot afford that kind of investment. If you can double your core count for $300, that is a steal. I'd buy a 1070 for that price in a heartbeat. Here I am with a 970, dreaming of a 1070. I suppose I could get a 1070 now that prices are getting better, but now I figure I'll wait for the next gen.
Agreed
You're supposed to give them something positive, not telling them you'll spend more time with them!!
I will take pictures of my black eye when I try to sell it to her, someone can make a texture out of it for M6 ;p
So true lol.
Well, lucky me on top of this I forgot about my Z370a mobo having a 630 UHD onboard, I just loaded it up and my system is giving me 32gb of shared video memory for the integrated card, I"m going to use it for my display and keep the 2 physical cards free from display task. Ok, the UHD for display is definitely the ticket. My render is much faster, and I guess now that windows is not ripping off the 1.5 gb to run my display my cards can use the full ram for scenes. Well its not a 1080ti, but they are good enough for what I'm doing.
Thanks all for the input, and the relationship advice. I have a bag of ice in the fridge for later when I try that line mentioned by Brimstone ;p
Nice. When I bought my current system a few years ago, I thought I'd save a few bucks by getting the non-"K" version processor since I wouldn't need integrated video anyway. I've been kicking myself ever since. I'd love to plug my monitor into integrated graphics and just run my cards for rendering. Plus when troubleshooting it's nice to be able to boot into integrated video because that always works.
Oh well, lesson learned: from now on, I'm always getting onboard video.
I'm normally the same, I think I basically got a deal on the mobo. I have always scoffed at integrated because I play games too. I have had this mobo for a year now, until yesterday never tried the integrated, I'm glad I did. Saves having to run out and buy a cheap card for the monitor which is something I wasn't about to do anyhow.
