Photoshop Filter Suggestions?

FauvistFauvist Posts: 2,219

Does anyone know of any good filters for Photoshop?  Filters that change the look of the entire image?  The only package I have is Topaz Adjust.

Thanks!

I was about to suggest the free Nik collection from Google, but it seems they have sold it to another company.  Some nice toold in there, but not sure I'd pay the £59 that the new company is asking for them.

I often use Smart Photo Editor because it has a lot of effects that can quickly change the look of an image, I'd say it's definitely worth a look at the free trial.

Another that I've had for a long time is Camera Bag.  This has fewer effects than Smart Photo Editor, but I find they give a very different look to an image.  Not sure what the new version is like though, but again there is a demo.

I often use the above two when I've finished a render and am not completely happy with the look or the mood of the image.  Often the image can be saved in postwork with these plugins rather than starting again.  AS I said, both have demo versions (and are on sale right now) so definitely worth a look.

There is still an earlier version of Nik Collection for free. See link on this comment: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3750771/#Comment_3750771

I use Nik Filters, FotoSketcher (free), PhotoDonut (basic version free), Topaz Labs (free), Topaz Impression and sometimes ON1 Effects 10.5 which is FREE (at the moment).

    ON1 Effects description :

Adding style is part of what defines you as a photographer. Effects 10 includes hundreds of stackable filters, presets, borders, and textures to help create your style. Whether you're looking to add an HDR look, convert to B&W, bring out more detail, reduce noise, or enhance a portrait, don't use five different plug-ins when ON1 Effects 10.5 is your one-stop solution.

ON1 effects 2018. It can be used as a standalone or as a Photoshop plugin. (Note: Plugin only works in CS6  and CC versions of Photoshop and also in Elements 13 + 14) It runs just shy of $60.  The whole PhotoRAW suite goes on sale periodically...like Black Friday.  I think ON1 effects 2018 is the same or close to the same as the modual in PhotoRAW 2018.

You might be able to get your hands on On1 effects 10.5 which is free. I'm pretty sure effects 10.5 is as effects was pre PhotoRAW suite.  If I recall correctly, it was the modual they sent out to owners of ON1 suite to entice them to upgrade to PhotoRAW  so probably the version of effects in PhotoRAW 2017. BTW, it's not crippleware. Definitely worth submitting a request. You have to give an email address to get a link but you can opt out of that after you grab you filter. It might, however,  be worthwhile to not opt out as they'll send you a heads up when the suite goes on sale which is usually at a steep discount.

If you have Photoshop CS6 or above, have you thought about downloading and using LUTs files? Lots of nice free ones out there on the net.  If you have CS5 or above, you can get some really cool effects from the HDR filter that is built in.

You might also consider using Photoshop Actions. You can find lots of really cool free actions sets on the DeviantArt website.

I use Nik Collection a lot.  I love that it's free and has really good options/presets

My favorites lately are by Topaz Labs in Topaz Studio too... Smudge, Impression, AI Clear, AI Remix... pretty much all of the Pro Adjustments and the Public settings made available in Topaz Studio (tons of pre-made combinations of adjustments to use as a starting point).

If I just want to overhaul an image I might not otherwise use, I'll usually try giving it a painterly effect using Dynamic Auto Painter Pro. It can create a much bigger image from a smaller one, can hide a multitude of sins and is very quick. It can mostly be left to get on with it without requiring much if any tweaking, but you can tweak to your heart's content if you want to. I love the program, and it's capable of much more than the fast and dirty effects that I might be making it sound like. If I'm feeling more creative then my favourite is Topaz Studio, with it's many effects, adjustments, filters and compositing capabilities. I can spend hours in this software and often have to remind myself that 'less is more' and that knowing when to stop with an image is a good thing too!

I'd never heard of Inky Deals, but have just lost half a morning there - what a fascinating place. I'm seeing plenty there that I could use. Thanks for giving it a mention, Serene Night.

Inky deals is addictive. If you sign up for the newsletter they give you plenty of good offers. My issue is they are kinda disorganized and they make offers with the same filters in them so you must be aware of what you own already before going for some of their bundles.

i love the overlays. The leaves, flower petals, lights and are useful.

+1 to the overlays. They are very useful and super easy to use. You can also find overlay bundles at dealjumbo (which is like inkydeals).

Did they FINALLY update and recompile for 64 bit or are they still only 32 bit hon?

Ah, I see, Xero seems to be gone.  These are just at download sites like Download.com.  Oh well.  They WERE my favs back in the day but when I moved up to 64 bit software they no longer worked.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I'll check them out!

Yeah, that's why if you have a CS6 or below version of Photoshop you install the 32 bit version alongside your 64 bit.  No so option for the CC subscription cloudies...
