I got it in 2015. The last case I bought was around 2006, so I don't know exactly what's new or old. I just know mine has the funny fan connectors.
Instead of
No big deal. The new ones take up less space and my case looks cleaner with everything zip-tied out of the way. While I was looking up those pics, I saw some adapter cables, so I may have a solution to my problem.
Edit: How's your new card? I've been stress testing my 1080ti and I haven't maxed out the RAM yet. I crashed my computer a couple of times trying, though.
...still in the process of updating/upgrading.
Kind of delayed until I can get a good deal on a wired gigabit router to connect the two systems together so I first can transfer important files over to the second one before wiping the C drive to do a clean install W7Pro and my programmes on the rendering system.which is needed for the memory upgrade. I'd rather do everything in one "tear down" than several ones.
After that, for rendering in Carrara I plan to use the resources of both machines.
Ooooh, upgrade time. I'm dreading that. My current Win7 install will be 3 years old this December. Back in the old days I used to reinstall every 2-3 years, probably because of all the crap I installed and removed. Plus I had a subscription to PC Gamer (with the demo disk) so I installed lots of game demos. That stuff turns your system registry into alphabet soup after awhile. I have to admit modern Windows is a lot more stable.
The main thing I'm dreading with reinstalling DS is that I've made a lot of custom characters, plus downloaded lots of free models and saved them as props. I think I'm going to lose a lot of that stuff because I was so sloppy about where I saved them.
...my Library and runtimes are all on the D-drive so I don't have to worry about installing all my content all over again (and having to rebuild the runtime structure).
My case has a see though side, and it doesn't have such scratches. And I've had it for...16 years.
Its very pretty, with an older color changing LED fan. <.<
But know this case was build in 2002. Its was made in a time when a gaming case could be pretty without being ridiculous. It is a pleasing steel blue, with that color changing fan. As it is an old case, I had to physically cut some of it out for airflow. It was made in a time when 80mm fans were all the rage. But worse, it had very small holes for the air to go through. It made no sense. I cut out the holes in the front and back, which are all hidden from view; the front has a cover and the back has mesh covers I added in.. It may not be the sexiest case out there (not the best cable management), but it is MY case, and I'll keep using as long as possible. Its housed several machines at this point. It occupies a place front and center in my living room, so it does serve as a piece of decor.
I've started using an external drive for Daz content, so transfering will be a simple as plug and play.
I'm not sure if Huang was messing with us or not. When you think about it, Nvidia has no reason to release a new generation. AMD's Vega came and went with little impact, and AMD wont have anything new until at least 2019. GPUs are still selling like hot cakes, even with the decline of crypto mining with them. Without any competition, there is no good reason to release anything soon. But it cold still happen.
There are so many things at play right now, and we also have the wild card of Intel jumping into the GPU game. It may be that Nvidida is simply content playing the waiting game to see what Intel and AMD may be doing. That would be bad for us, but that's what happens when you lack competition.
...yeah for a while gaming cases began to look as if they would transform into some kinds of killer robot when your back was turned.
I like my old P-193, elegant with tonnes of airflow, and quiet.
That's reassuring to know. I left the plastic wrap on mine since I don't have a fan for the opening anyway. I just know everything else I have with plexiglass is all scratched up. I have high hopes for the new GPUs, but I'm not holding my breath. All Nvidia really needs to do is stay slightly ahead of the competition.
That's a nice looking case. Mine's ok, but I'd like to disconnect the LEDs on my fans. It's annoying.
You can polish plexiglass using some fine grain metal oxide for polishing gems (e.g. zinc oxide). Remember to use water, especially if you use an electric polisher or it may get so hot that the plexiglass melts.
Most Antec fans come with 3 different connectors, including the old 5/12v:

Or use these:

I already bought my fans without checking the connectors. :( But, yesterday I saw some adapter cables to go from the old 5V molex connector to the new 3 pin, so I'm going to order some of those. Actually my case isn't as hot as I thought it'd be with my 2 cards, but it never hurts to have more fans.
If it is just for transferring files at this point, you can still connect two machines with an ethernet crossover cable alone until you get a router. Used to do this in a previous millenium - my last crossover cable is so old I think it is Cat3.
In fact, I was just trying to remember how to do this, as the last (Klingon expletives!!) Windows 10 update removed the "Homegroup" functions which I had hacked to allow the forbidden sharing of files between Win 10 and Win 7 on the same switcher. So I guess I will try it myself. Failing that, I will just use a portable drive, but this was a lot faster.

...got the email
Part is also figuring out how to transfer my saved logins in FF and still stymied on installing Norton AV without having to go online unprotected. Having a system already get infected once is one too many times.
I have the installer for the version of FF I currently use (not trusting new updates to not trash my saved password files again like has happened in the past). Really really hate having to go through password recovery.
I dont want to be that guy.. but Norton? Ewww.. I only use the current Windows Defender on Win10, seems to do the job. But back in the old days I used NOD32.. but yea, never heard any good things about Norton, used to hog the machine like a beast.
...I'm on W7, Never trusted Windows security as last time I did, that was when I had a system infected.
Norton really doesn't cause my system to lag at all, maybe I'm just lucky or have a configuration it gets along with. Also running Sophos and Malware Bytes.
Haven't tried with Win 7 but file sharing between Win 10 and Win 8.1 works fine here via ethernet (over switch connected to modem/router), using a Workgroup instead of Homegroup. The first time I connect after a boot it takes about a minute before it connects though, and I used to get an error message first, but they seem to have at least fixed the error message thing in one of the updates.
I'm not familiar with Norton, but can you download a copy of it and install that from thumbdrive before you connect to the internet? That's what I do with AVG. It probably won't have all the latest updates, but at least you'll have basic protection. Plus the default Windows firewall/defender settings are pretty strong, you should be safe long enough to get your AV installed.
I've been through this rodeo too many times. Now, before I wipe my hard drive, I load up a thumbdrive with antivirus, web browser, graphics drivers, and pretty much everything from my motherboard manufacturer's download page (sound, network, chipset utilities, etc)
...I asked them about that but I don't get an installer file until I go online to install it on my primary system (I have the 5 device version). These days it seems when you buy software you only get the activation key, no more disc or USB stick anymore, and that's where the conundrum is. After clean installing W7 Pro and all my software, I'll have no proactive AV on the system until I go to Symantec's site. That leaves a window of opportunity for malware. As I mentioned I don't trust MS security (as far as I can throw Mr. Nadella) to protect my system in the meantime.
I really miss getting a hard backup of software in these days of the "cloud" and DL only installation.
Besides the system drive I always have two mirrored drives for data in my machines, there I also keep the installers for the software I use for each of them together with keys, receipts and everything. That makes it very easy to install all the software if I do a fresh install of the OS.
I woulds say it's strange if Symantec doesn't offer a download version you can download before you install the OS. Besides, if you're behind a router you're usually quite secure as long as you only visit safe sites.
I know not many people have faith in the MS AV setup, but I think if you install a legit Windows 7 or later OS, and keep all the security settings turned on, you should be safe online long enough to get your favorite AV installed. It's definitely strange that they don't offer a full install download. I was going to recommend switching antivirus, but in this day and age, that's like questioning someone's religion or politics - Just don't do it.
+1 on the mirrored drives. I lost 2 hard drives within a short period of time back in 2005. Since then, I've bought my hard drives in pairs and run raid1 mirrors. It costs a little more, but it's worth it to me.
...that's part of what's stalling me, I don't have a good one yet and many hardwired ones are terribly expensive, don't need wireless as I live in a very small apartment and only need to connect the two desktops which are a few feet from each other. Two of the notebooks I have are XP so those don't go online and the third one is Linux (Ubuntu) but I need to get a charging brick for it.
This story is making the rounds today.,..

Ack! Hopefully their glut of 1080TI's doesn't cause them to produce less 1180's...thereby resulting in yet another shortage.
...interesting . No wonder after a several month dearth at their store, they now seem to have plenty GTX cards in stock.
So we will have to endure more months of speculation on the new generation cards .
That's why I decided to go ahead and buy a 1080ti. Over the years I've gotten tired of these product shortages for things that aren't even released yet. I'm not saying Nivdia is doing it, but plenty of tech companies have hyped up artificial shortages to build up consumer frenzy for a product launch (Cough!..Playstation...Cough!XBox...) Anyway, I appreciate Nvidia ramping up production and actually trying to get cards to gamers. Aside from raising prices to cover VRAM costs, they haven't gouged consumers or their card vendors. I hope they do decide to sell the Pascal GPUs, I'd hate to see them go to waste.
I'm still hoping AMD creates their own version of Iray so we can finally have GPU competitors in this space (assuming Daz integrates with it). Then competition will naturally drive prices to more reasonable levels.
Well, they do have Radeon ProRender (previously FireRender), but I haven't heard of any applications that use it. I'd love to see more competition too.
On the ProRender main page, six specific applications are mentioned (Autodesk, Maya, Blender, Solidworks, Cinema4D, and a game engine importer for Unreal Engine.

As far as the reported situation in the article I just reported (I've also seen similar articles from a few other places today), what I find disappointing is that it is implied that Nvidia is actually delaying the introduction of the next card, in the hopes that they can clear out their existing stock first.
This is a dangerous game, as we are already seeing benchmarks prototype 7nm Vega popping up in the usual places. The longer Nvidia waits, the more likely that 7nm Vega will steal a significant part of their thunder. This is also why I'm thinking that, at this point, there's no upside for Nvidia introducing anything other than a 7nm card if they wait too much longer, which means that the speculated 12nm cards we've been reading about, well maybe they just decided not to make those now.
I suppose they could use 12nm for bargain cards though, while the 7nm process is getting ironed out.
So, I guess you can feel secure in grabbing that 1080Ti you've been waffling about (as Kitsumo did). Who knows, maybe vendors will feel a bit more secure about putting them on sale here and there while we wait, if we do indeed suddenly have a glut of them.
...well, unless Daz embraces Pro Render (which likely won't happen) AMDs position in this is moot.
Sorta related, as it relates to Titan cards.
Jensen Huang just paid a visit to Daz3D's stomping grounds. No idea if he visited/will visit Daz3D while he was/is in Utah, but he gave away some CEO Edition Titan V's to some AI researchers based in SLC!

Would love an alternative to nvidia - purely as competition is good for consumers.
It is also good for companies too; keeps them sharp.
..in the gaming sector there is, sadly for us, PBR render engines still tend to be brand specific.
