Does anyone think about or say out loud

    "Digital Art Zone 3D"

when they read or talk about DAZ3D?

    Or is it rather

    "das three dee"?

you may notice that it is now shown as Daz, meaning that Daz 3d have dropped the Digital Art Zone.

And they've separated off the "3d", thus sparing all them young'uns confusion with their "l33t" speak who might see DAZ3D (or Daz3d) and think, "Why on earth would a company call themselves 'dazed'?"

I have enough trouble saying Zeebrush instead of Zedbrush

Indeed. It was a bit funny though when I used to pronounce the name of the band Zed Zed Top - just doesn't scan, does it? But then Americanisms do get under the skin of the British, even though in some cases the Americans are historically correct and it is the British version that has strayed from its old pronunciation. However, I do find "aluminum" and "nucular" particularly annoying.

With Zee v Zed, in actual fact in the truest, oldest British (Brythonic) languages the letter doesn't exist at all.

And "ye" is pronounced "the". (the "y" is a corrupted þ "thorn" th character). þ is still available in Icelandish . . .

And I will add, nobody asked about Mattymanx, but for years I said it "matty manx," when in fact it's Matty Man X.

Thank you for that, SickleYield! I thought he was, like, from the Isle of Man, and therefore, Manx :P

And thanks to all the PAs that have contributed so far!

Most people have told me they thought the "manx" was a reference to cats.  I think you're the second person to make a reference to the Isle of Man.  In all honesty, the x is only there cause "mattyman" was taken when I went to sign up for my first email account.  So I tossed the "x" on the end and that is that.  And Sickle is correct on pronounciation.

What about joelegecko? Is it Joel E Gecko? Or Joe le Gecko? Or even JoelleGecko?

Laticis Imagery? Is it Lat - i - kus? Or Lat - ee - kus?

Nikisatez? Nikeesa[as in, Nikita] - tez? Niki - satez?

I too, thought it was Matty Manx, as in, first name Matty and he liked manx cats. LOL.

Nikisatez? Nikeesa[as in, Nikita] - tez? Yup, that’s how it’s pronounced. It’s actually a meshing of three names. My sister, me, and my mother.

    Thank you very much @Nikisatez!

Looking through the list of vendors, I think I can make an intelligent guess at most of them (familiarity with various European languages helps) and then I hit the V's with VincentXyooj, Vyusur, and Velemudr, and I'm just lost.

Actually, the M's are a bit of a rough patch too, with Magbhitu and Mechaven. And Maelwenn looks obvious, but might be a trap.

And let's not get started on Lwanmtr and Djigneo.

Mind you, as someone whose family name is properly written Mac an t-Saoir, I can hardly talk.

I have no idea how mousso is pronounced. I dont even remember why I chose that name 10 years ago laugh

When I became a PA I wanted to change it to something cool like other PA's have but Daz told me to keep it. It does remind me of Mouse.

As for Izanami its pronounced eza-namy. I think. At least that is how they pronounced in the Naruto anime.

  • ArielRGHArielRGH Posts: 105

@Mousso thank you! So no official pronunciation. At least my curiosity is satisfied now. I always pronounced "MOO-so" because it sounds kind of like a Greek name.

Alright people, if anyone else wants to know about other pronunciations, the thread is open!

I get asked this all the time.

The "w" is symbolic of the peaks, not a conventional "w" sound. It can only be properly pronounced by people with beards. Gently grab the beard on both sides of the mouth, pull outward stretching out the cheeks and stretching the mouth, then push back in, creating a "wet" sound somewhere between a "pop" and a "squish". Do this 20 times rapidly.

    The "i", obviously, is silent.

The "z" is a buzzing sound 45 seconds long. Get a good, deep breath before you start.

My husband has a long beard. I just went and tried that on him to see what it sounded like.

    I am now in trouble.

I think it's fine that people have unique online names, but I'm just curious why they don't just use their real names. I notice that there are a few vendors who do use their actual names. Nothing wrong with using a "handle," but I'm just curious.

It's not an issue here ("E-Arkham") but on sites that don't let you use dashes in usernames ("EArkham"), people will call me "ear cam" which cracks me up.

Otherwise Arkham is pronounced just like you would for Lovecraft (or Batman) so its pretty easy-ish, I guess.

How many melanies are out there, or bob or mike etc? There are also a sufficent number of griefers on the internet, as well as personal information, to make people reluctant to use actual names.

With my (I am not a vendor any more, never was a PA, but did give away tons of freebies) my real name is Pam.  At the time I first needed a forum username there were a lot of people called Pam so I needed to make it more distinctive. Heck when I became part of the 3DSC team as a texture artist there was already another Pam on the team.  As my then email addy started with pam@chohole  I decided to use Chohole as my user name. and I have been using it ever since  18 or 19 years now. The email addy is long gone, but Chohole has stuck.

@Maikdecker... Since Michael is from DAZ Originals, I assume he's American and therefore I use an English pronunciation. I might be wrong but no one from DAZ has answered to this thread... yet. Of course if he were German it would be "me-kha-EL"

Intresting to read these comments :)

If Micheal as in ( Mike-cle) was in french its  pronouced as Michele  like - "My - chell"  which is Funny because I am American  But my My middle name is also french  Michelle,  even though my last name is German  "Summers" and my first name is Ivy is Anglo-Saxon , I guess that makes me a Heinz 57 wink

Err, no, in French Michael is pronounced "me-ka-el", and Michelle is "me-chell".

Well, considering that I'm French and living in Paris I'm rather sure of how it's usually pronounced in France ;)

Not sure where your friend got his pronunciation... Some people tend to say "My-kel" so it's closer to the English version, but I've never heard "My-chell".

his last name of Dubois .. does not sound like its spelt either.  so I had to take ihis word for it

  • IvyIvy Posts: 7,165

Leena when I met Micheal in college  he pronounced it as Michele (My-chell) and I asked him what it ment in french and he told me it ment Micheal or Mike.  his last name of  Dubois sounded to me like Due qu wa when he said it.  but if you were to read as its spelt  is sound like Do- bois..  as I said I had to take his word for it I'm not french

  • LeanaLeana Posts: 12,759

Oh I'm sure he did say it like that :)

The thing is, in French "mi" is always pronounced like "me", not "my". So either he tried to anglicize his name (which was probably Michel) or it was a nickname or a regional variant I never heard.

French pronunciation of Dubois is a bit difficult to give an English "sound equivalent" as there's no equivalent of the French "u" in English... Phonetic spelling would be \dy.bwa\

we went out for 3 years.  He said came from the southern part of france I think it was Annecy (not sure if i spelt that right)  and yes Micheal was very colorful, flamboyant and full of enengy,  I never met all his family but I did met his younger sister Heloise, which she said ment Louise ( not sure if I splet that right either..lol ) I've never been to france ,. But it is on my bucket list.
