I'm sure some of you like myself, have passion other then 3D.  Would like to learn how others began 3D,  I enjoy creating 3D as a relaxation hobby, my true passion since childhood is music, performing music, I've played the drums 30 plus years professionally.  My other passions prior to health complications were drag racing and billiards.  I just don't have the physical endurance for drums, drag racing and billards.  I never won a drag race, but was two time national qaulifer in APA billiards.

Once my health began to deteriorate, I spend a lot of time on my computer, I've always enjoyed drawing art by hand, specially comic books, I tried learning to paint, but had no skills, Lol !!!   I was always fascinated with graphic technology, I am a fan of Titanic !!  Viewing Titanic animation on the internet, sparked my intrerst to learn 3D animation.  I'm a retired CAD tech, but I never learned to render models, technology was not available during my career.  I began drafting on a table, pencil, compass and templates.  I returned to school, to learn Autocad.

I began to research animation software, came across Daz, software was free, I thought why? not.  I was planning to render models I create years ago, but DS was not compatible with Autocad at the time.  Did not have any desire to learn other modeling software, Blender, Hexagon, etc.....  Here I am today, self taught hobbyist., with alot of wonderful assistance from 3D community.  That's how my adventures with Daz began.

My family always share I have to many intrest, I need to just concentrate on one, Lol !!!!!

That is cool on the drums, I was a rock musician for 20+ years, mainly vocals, the songwriting and some rhythm guitar when needed. I started on drums, but found I like being the frontman more.

I also like shooting (guns and bows), been doing it my whole life, but got more into it in the past few years since I have some friends that are ex military and have access to other styles of weapons than before. Not a hunter though, to much respect for animals to kill them unless it comes down to survival, but fish are another story, LOL

I am also a pilot. Got my PPL a few years back and struggle to be able to afford keeping it current, but I do love flying. Ideally I would love a rotary license and my own heli. When I was 12 I got taken up by some national guard pilots in a Chinook and it changed my life..I've flown in a huey twice and I have to say it's an amazing experience. I love WWll aircraft also and although I hove gottten to climb around in and sit in cockpits of many of the historic aircraft, a dream is to fly in one of the old bombers, prefferably a B-17. I know the Collins Foundation offer rides for a price, just have to wait till they come to town again.

Then there is the normal hobby like golf.

My 3d travel began when modding a game I was playing in 1999 and I stared doing addons for it. I really took to modeling and a few years later worked for a small game studio along with doing addons for quite a few games, mainly flightsim and SIMS though. Then came poser and the art and photography training and experience I had when younger stepped in and I started doing more with imagery instead of just modeling and game design,

Hi Micheal, thanks.  Awesome friend ! I love all styles of music, I have a zillion favorites, but I mostly listen to Pink Floyd and Slayer.  Every time, I jammed Slayer in the car, my daughters would say dad, that's scary music, then I changed to girly tunes, Rofl !!  Any band favorites ?

That's very cool, appears we have a lot in common, I like to go to the range with my buddy occassionally, he's a gun fanatic, my favorite is Desert eagle.  Any favorites ?  I love bows, but hit everything but target, Lol !!!  In my younger day's, I loved fishing.

Awesome !!!!!!!!!  I'm a pilot to, on Microsoft flight simulator.  Never flew a real plane though. I love helicopers !!!  When I was in military (Artillery), I repelled from helicpoters transporting unit/guns.  I have framed copter pictures in my home, I love the Cobra and UH1.  I'm a fan of WWII aircrafts to.  Bombers are awesome, hope you fufill your dream.  I always wanted to fly in a jet plane, closest I ever got was flight simulater Nasa in Fl.

I love golf, I tried to play golf, but horrible at it, Lol !!!!!  Hope to see you in the masters.

Marvelous, how you began your 3D adventure.  Advancing you skills/talents.  What type of games you like to design ?

...for myself my main passions were music and traditional art.  I was a classically trained pianist, organist, and harpsichordist.  On the art side I painted in watercolours and oils as well as did pencil drawings. Unfortunately advancing arthritis made both pursuits difficult and eventually took them away. My other love was sport kite flying.which helped me stay in touch with music as one would choreograph a competition performance to music like a figure skater. Sadly for that, transportation became an issue as intercity bus service was severely cut back (I do not drive as I cannot afford to) which made it pretty much impossible to get to most events and festivals as they were held along the California, Oregon, and Washington coast (living inland, we don't get the steady clean winds like at the coast so most of the time you are standing around waiting to get a minute or so of steady wind now and then). I have several thousand invested in kites, lines & such (when I still was working), which has been siting idle for more than a decade.

3D CG is my last remaining creative outlet, however I fear I am being priced out of this as well. It's not just price increases here in the store, but more so, the rising cost of upgrading hardware to support advances in the software as I am now living on a fixed disability income.

Hi Kyoto, thanks for sharing.  Wow ! amazing how much people have in common.  Wonderful, you trained as a classical pianist, organist and harpsichord.  I love all classical instruments.  I love listening to classical music, love the piano, organ specially pipe, and harpsichord, but Violin/Cello is my most favored, as one can see in some of my renders.  That's wonderful, painting takes some serious skills, unfortunately I don't have, Lol !!  I love to view all types of paintings.  What type of painting you enjoy, portrait, scenary, etc.....  Now, pencil drawing I can relate.  Sorry to read, you have health condition complications as well, but happy to see you continue in other hobbies such as 3D  I have no idea what sport kite flying is, but sounds fun.  I enjoy watching figure skating, music and competitors, really relaxes me, baseball put's me to sleep Rofl !!!!  That's really gotta suck about bus service, hope all works out well for you in the future.  I love the ocean, Cali, Oregon and Wash are super beautiful states.  That's quite a kite collection, definetly a passion, wish I could seem em all.

Certainly understand how you feel friend, you are not alone.  It's not that a lot of us, don't enjoy creating 3D, all the content is expensive for a lot of us.  Fast grab is my bff.  I agree, inflation is steadily climbing, making it difficult for most of us to live comfortably, everything continues to go up, cept income.  I remember when a can of soda pop was 25 cents, now $2, movie tickets $1 now $10.,   Crazy !!

We'll positive news is, regardless of setback's, we continue to enjoy our intrest.

My main passion is adult erotic horror with an emphasis on fantasy death fetish.  I like watching independently produced fetish videos featuring consenting adults roleplaying fantasy death scenes.  And there's a whole online community full of thousands of like-minded people.

Since 1999, my main contribution to the fantasy death fetish community has involved running a free-access clip site that spotlights fantasy asphyxia scenes in mainstream movies and TV shows.  I remove camera cuts to irrelevant scenes and splice the remaining footage of the main action together to create an uninterrupted death scene.  Then, I do a write-up for each clip that includes a scene description and commentary and put it all online.  Unfortunately, site-crashing bandwidth issues prompted a complete overhaul and the permanent removal of my entire collection last year.  Now, I only edit and post my favorite scenes instead of trying to feature every scene I can get my hands on.

I like to think of myself as the fantasy asphyxia version of a much more popular site that spotlights celebrity nudity in mainstream movies and TV shows.  I got into 3D art because I can't afford to produce my own videos.

Hi Nyghtfall, thanks for sharing, I have a intrest in erotic horror/fantasy death as well, just a different version I love vampires.  Although not a topic often talked about, we all have a fascination with death.  You sound just like me, cut out all the junk, let's get to the good stuff, Rofl !!!!  Would be cool to check out some of your work at Deviant.  Know exactly what you share, I get tired of the same ole celebrity nudity, smoochy, smoochy in mainstream movies/tv, change of pace, different is more fun.  Ever plan to produce your own videos/movies in the future ?  What type of video editor you use ?  I use Sony vegas for video/music editing.  3D is a marvelous alternative.

..for painting mostly scenes and and surreal (was a "disciple" of Dali).

Sport kites employ wither two or four lines to control the kite's flight more precisely. OI used to do a lot of really offbeat manouveres one of which I "stole" from competition aerobatic flying (the Lomcovák).  Always had a fascination with aeroplanes originally considered engineering and even took flight lessons (about 20 hrs in the logbook before it just got too expensive).  Never pursued the field as in the early 70s aeronautical engineers were a "dime a dozen" after Boeing nearly turned out the lights in Seattle. Used to build both scale display radio control model aeroplanes as well as got into model rocketry in my high school days.

Kite flying sort of also "sated" that interest as it was the closest I could get to performing aerobatics in an aircraft (actually took several aerobatic rides which included a 1927 Great Lakes and a two seat P-51).

The best finish I ever did was 4th place and the US nationals in freestyle. I flew a Flexifoil kite (which sort of looks like an air mattress) from a belt with no hands in about 1.75 MPH of wind.

    Flexifoil kite

Here is a a video showing a bit of what sport kite flying is by one of the masters of the sport, John Barresi. At one point in the video behind him is the 70-something year old legend Ray Bethel who is flying three independent kites at the same time.  I know both of these people. Shaking hands with Ray feels like he could crush the bones in your hand to powder.

I need to get back into this as it is good extension for the joints, and yes, makes me feel young again.

Hi Kyoto, thanks for sharing.  I enjoy your painting choices, I love both scenic and surreal, specially surreal.  Now that is very cool, had no idea kite flying was a pro sport.  Kite flying takes some serious skills, manuevers ?  I can't even get a kite into the air, Rofl !!!!  Very cool video, I've never seen that style of kite sport, scenary is beautiful, he's definetly a master, didn't see Bethel though, probably from concenttrating on Barresi kite, thanks for sharing.  I can imagine, person has to have strong upper body, hands to manuever a kite, in that style.  Surely hope you can get back into it someday, just watching vid takes me back in time to my youth.

Beautiful kite you own, looks huge.  Now, I wanna get a kite smiley Tx never has kite flying wind, just tornado's.  You mean, you borrowed.  Great to see, how passionate you are in sport kite.

That's very cool, you had a fascination for planes.  Actually, aviation is what led me to begin my career in design engineering.  Congrats on the flying lessons, no argument from me, education/training is expensive, but happy you were able to experience.  Very true, aeronautical engineers were a dime of dozen.  Was a challenge finding a job.  I worked for Boeing in Dallas back in the 90's,.  I was never able to experience radio control airplanes, would still love to get one though, but rocketry I can relate.

Awesome experience for you, flying in a P-51 !!!  You so lucky !!!  Now, I'm jealous, Rofl !!!!  P-51 Mustangs are my favorite.  I love to build P-51 models out of balsa wood.  Flying over the Great lakes, wow ! what an experience for you.  A forever lasting happy memory.

Congrats finishing 4th in the freestyle nationals, certainly was a proud day for you yes National competition is a challenge.  I was 10th best pool shooter in central Tx, 2002, lost my first billiards game in the nationals, Lol !!!  If my body wasn't so physically broken, I would love to attend those kite events.  You experienced a lot of fun adventures.  I would have loved to done all that cool stuff.

Interesting question. I also have a passion for aviation, and got my PPL in 04. While I haven't actually flown anything that wasn't a "spam can", I've sat in many interesting types (my favourites being Spitfire, Tiger Moth, & Sunderland flying boat), and also flown a big 737 training simulator. Actually it was flight simulators that got me into 3D - making addon airports for FSX. Sadly I can't afford to fly these days, although I do still grab a right seat whenever I get the opportunity.

Most of my family is musical, except me. I'm the one that's tone deaf and has no sense of rythm. I learned to play several instruments (badly) - trumpet, guitar, drums - but the only way people would pay me money is to stop! I never learned the piano, although I always meant to. I even own a keyboard! Still at least piano music lovers are safe!! I can't sing either!

When I'm not creating 3D environments or simming (I play trains as well as planes, & occasionally race cars), I write novels. Dystopian and sci-fi are my interests. Big fan of George Orwell's 1984 (first read it when it was still "in the future", lol)

And I drink real ale, lol.

Hi friend, thanks for sharing.  I'm a socializer in the real world, always interested in the passion of others.  Wonderful friend, appears we have a few aviation fans.  Congrats on the PPL, major achievement.  Well, flying spam can's sure beats Microsoft simulator, the real experience is what counts.  Spitfire is a beauty, never seen a real flying boat, would be interesting though.  Holy moly ! you flew a 737 simulator.  Now, that is cool, I'm jealous !!! Rofl !!!!  That's very cool Tango, you incorporate 3D into FSX.   I'm always in search of FSX add on's, my complaint is mainly poor quality terrains.  Your not alone friend, alot of us can't afford the flying adventures, but maybe someday.......

That's funny, I'm the only one musical in my family.  I have rhythem, but lack skills in other instruments.  I did play saxaphone in middle school through high school.  Trumpet and guitar are cool instruments.  Lol !! I know that feeling, people pay me money to stop talking, Rofl !!!!!!!!! no joke.  Friend, it's never to late to learn, wipe off that dust, and jam on the keyboard.  Your not the only one, I've heard some horrid singers, that become musical mainstream stars.

Very cool, we both enjoy reading, Orwells sounds interesting.  I read Anne Rice.  I love planes, trains and race cars, expensive hobby though, enjoy.  You enjoy writing to, I've never written a novel, but I can write a book easily communicating.  I love Sci fi, never heard of dystopian cept DS model.

Ale is delicious, I should drink it more often, but I have a Dr. Pepper addiction.  Thanks for chiming in friend.

Same as Tango Alpha for me. I got my private pilot license in France when I was 17 before I even learnt to drive. Then came to the US and got my commercial pilot license, instrument and multi engine ratings and flight instructor license. My former students now fly me on commercial airlines. I find it pretty cool!

Personally, I paint and draw. Indeed, I use DAZ mostly to compose scenes that later get converted into real paintings. That is also why I seldom post actual renderings, as most of my renderings include only parts.

My Poser experience began with Fractal Designs Poser v1. I bought it sometime around 1996-1997. I never figured it out. I discovered Poser v4 and the online communities in 1999, right after I got married. My new wife barely tolerated my Poser hobby, and wouldn't allow me to spend any money on it. I've since been divorced, and have focused on DAZ Studio, rather than Poser, for many years. I remain a bumbling amateur, and often I just get exhausted trying to navigate my way through a project.

Over the past several months I've rediscovered my interest in Genealogy, and worked on my family tree. I have a subscription to Ancestry, and use Family Tree Maker (FTM). My Dad helped me get a jumpstart with a few photos of gravestones from a family plot. He also gave me the names of his father's immediate family. That was all I needed. Many branches of my family tree have centered around Bennington, Vermont going back to the 1700s. i've made incredible progress, but recently hit a snag due to problems with the servers that allow Ancestry to sync with the Family Tree Maker app. That's when I decided to buy Floyd 8 and fiddle around with DAZ Studio again.

I paint, draw, make chainmail jewelry and make beads. A little sculpting here and there. I also make my own scented wax melts, if that counts...lol. Boring, I know, but I'm not the most mobile person in the world anymore since the spinal stenosis set in ;). Because I'm now handicapped and not working, I try and fill my days with as many different things as I'm able to keep myself from going stir crazy. LOL.

I have been doing the 3D thing for over 20 years - first Vue d'Esprit, then Poser and now Daz Studio.

I was a cartographer for the City of L.A. for over 30 years. Actually, I was a graphics designer building pictures of maps, rather than drawing technical maps, but they still called me a cartographer.

My hobby is designing books. Sometimes the books need to be illustrated. I'm a designer, not an artist. Need I say more?

  • I'm heavily involved in Pathfinder and Starfinder organized play, and also some other tabletop RPG's.  A lot of what I use DAZ for is character art.

I also do foam-sword boffer fighting.

I play D&D, video games, read books, and play Go (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)  - to avoid confusion) mainly. The better my character renders are, the more likely they become D&D characters laugh

...thank you.  Yeah I have two kite bags which contain several 1,000$s worth of sport kites, pretty much everything for m a small 2' indoor kite to an 8' Flexifoil powerkite (which produces a lot of pull) and a couple Revolution foue line kites.  4-line flying is a lot different in that you have two lines coming off a single handle similar to what those old control line petrol powered model aeroplanes used for control. This not only lets you steer the kite but warp it to do some pretty amazing moves like propeller spins sudden stops in mid air and even flying backwards or sideways.

Mr. Baressi again with a quad line Revolution kite.

My first ever performance was flying a black Flexifoil  with a 60' white tail to Debussy's Clair de Lune. Never competed before and the only openings left at the event were in the "Masters" Division (the top class). Yeah was out of my league but finished 8th out of 12 flyers. and received some nice complements.   I primarily fly to classical as I know it so well.  The trick though is the maximum time allowed is 4 minutes 5 for the freestyle event) so finding a short enough work (or editing one) is a real challenge in itself. My other best performance was flying to a Mazurka by Chopin (placed first in several competitions that season) where I touched the wingtip to the ground for each of the last 6 notes.  I tried other genres of music like jazz and "newage" (which lost of other flyers used) but didn't fare as well as it just wasn't in me I guess.

Again, no longer on the circuit (just can't get to all the events as I don't drive and flying across country to a major event it would cost almost as much for my luggage and all my kites as for my ticket) but I try to make the big festival in Long Beach WA just North of Portland where I live every year where I fly demo performances (non competition).  Thinking of reviving that old Debussy routine and adding a few more twists to it now that I am a a bit more experienced.

As to the P-51 flight, that was during press day before an airshow in Everett WA (I was doing a report of the event for my local radio station).  Not only a legendary plane but with a legendary pilot, John "Wild Bill" Crump who was also a WWII hero.  he was best known for having adopted a coyote pup he named "Jeep" which often flew with him on missions. That afternoon, we first went up in a Cessna aerobatic trainer where he let me feel through the moves and even fly back to the airport (I had mentioned bout my previous flight lessons) and land as he was also a certified flight instructor.  After we were back on the ground he asked me "now how about a real ride" and thumbed towards the Miss America P-51 sitting on the tarmac (highly modified for racing).  When I mentioned I'd love to but it must be expensive he said "you're press, let's go get you a G-suit over in the hanger."  We did a full airshow routine including high speed (425 knot) passes "over the deck".  Even with the suit I was getting tunnel vision but never blacked out or felt ill. After we landed I was grinning from ear to ear like the proverbial cat that got the canary.  Since that day I no longer get excited about going to theme parks, except maybe on a big fast roller coaster.

Mr. Crump  and the Cessna we flew in / The Miss America P-51.

Sadly he is no longer with us having passed away in 2008.  One thing he loved was getting people interested in learning how to fly.

...into Dystopian futures as well.  Been involved with an RPG called Shadowrun as both a player and GM which was one of the other reasons I got into this (someone on one of the gaming forums was posting images of characters and scenes he created in Poser and Daz).  One of the major stories I am working on is sort of a spin off based on a character I played (that little troublemaker Leela) which is set in a world similar to the one in the game.  Yeah the kid has quite the history, a lot of it not very sweet and pretty.

Yeah, sat in the flight decks/cockpits of many a plane, from an T-6 Harvard to a 747 (and you are way up there I was eye to eye with the people on the concourse observation deck). Somewhere in a box there is an old photo of me when I was a teenager (taken by the pilot) sitting in the left seat of a 707-320 hand on the throttles while the plane was parked at the gate (this was back in the days before all the security jazz began). My first flight ever was a 30 min scenic jaunt around the city in a 1926 Ford 4-AT at an airshow back in the 1960s. I was hooked after that.

Flying  a real simulator, that is an ultimate experience as it effectively is the "real" aircraft.

As to "real ale" I live in the "cradle of Craft Brewing" here in the States (Oregon).  Not hard to find good ale (one of the first craft breweries is only a couple blocks away).

I write.  I've got two fantasy published books, with a whopping maybe twenty sales (lol) and a LOT of novel-length fanfiction for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout settings that's much more popular than the published books are.  I was a big text roleplayer for about four years before I got exhausted with the interpersonal aspects of it.  Lately I find solo writing to be very restful, but I do have one partner I'll probably publish with, the rare and precious person who is a good writer with good grammar and similar interests.

Writing is something I wouldn't want to do for a living, because I want to write without regard for marketability (in particular I like unmarketable protagonists, including a sociopathic upright cat, an androgynous spiny person, a very religious older-middle-aged dark elf, and so on).  3D is a good vocation for me jobwise because the necessary compromises don't ruin my enjoyment of it.

...yeah I most likely will release my story when it is done as a Net novel since I don't care for forced compromises either.

A couple decades ago I was working on the concept for an SF-graphic novel (currently "mothballed" though I still have all the notes & sketches) which was not "terra human-centric".  OK that was one strike.  The second was the main culture in my story, a quasi feline like race who were not simply upright standing cats (curse Avatar) who had no tails and only four digits on each hand.  The females...well,...didn't have "boobs" (females of another race in the storyline also didn't have them) and shapely hips which was one of the major critiques.I kept receiving.  Mind you back then graphic novels were still primarily published for the most part by comic book companies whos major output were superhero titles with over-muscled, "over-endowed" characters. I finally shut the project down as there was no way I could do it all myself (I wasn't that good of an inker and had no distribution channels) as that was the only way I could keep it more true to the vision (afterwards I actually toyed with the idea of a parody concept which was my dig on the state of comic art back then which featured a slightly older superheroine who looked like a "normal" person even in costume).

As I get better creating morphs and learning modelling, I am considering revisiting the old SF storyline.

    Worldbuilding.

I'd say writing, but my favorite part of making stories is creating the setting ... which often involves figuring out the stories that are part of the history... it can be a real rabbit hole/feedback loop.

Part of the reason I want to push myself to learn more modeling is so that I can create pictures of my world that don't use purchased assets and where I don't pull my hair out because I've got the perfect noble's outfit for ladies of Culture A, but no corresponding Lord's outfit (or, more rarely vice versa) or I can't find any buildings that look "right" or any one of dozens of other little things that make a picture look like everyone's from the same culture while not all wearing/carrying the same thing.  (that isn't just reskinned Euro-Fantasy or Faux-Asian.)

I also spend a lot of time on what I generically call Crafty Crap.  working with polymer clays, leather working, sewing (lots of sewing, but not neccisarily cosplay) jewelry making, knitting, needlepoint, kumihimo braiding (my latest)... if it has been sold at a Lee Wards (I used to work there out of High School) or Michael's in the past 30 years, odds are good I've at least looked into it, if not actually invested in it a little bit.

When it comes down to it, I just like making things.

I used to do graphite drawings and digital photosop art as a hobby. People started to hire me to do drawings for them, so I got my 1st DSLR camera so I could get better reference photos. I never drew again. As soon as I started posting photos people started calling for photo shoots. I went from a 0 income stay at home mom to making 6 figures in a year. While I was opening my studio I was also very sick, and was later diagnosed with Chron's disease. After a couple of major hospitalizations and then a deadly secondary illness I finally took doctors advice and stopped working. I pouted for a long time before I could bring myself to pick up my camera again. Then I started photographing my kids again. Mostly my youngest and doing character photography to be used in artwork/ photo composites later. This is what I was doing before my phone started ringing off the hook and I was doing everyone else's photos. So I guess I went back to where I started. I did a Khaleesi photo shoot of my daughter and I needed a dragon to be posed in a particular way to go with the photo, so that's when I picked up Daz. It's so much like a real photography studio that it's sort of like working again, without the nagging customers or the hospitalizing stress. :)

I used to draw in my teens and early twenties.  I quit when I started working with Blender and the GIMP.  There was never incentive to pick it back up again.  I was never actually good at it, that would've taken a lot more practice, but I've known people who were, and it's sad how very little paying work there is for traditional artists compared to photography and 3D, and how very little that work pays on an hourly basis by comparison.  You basically have to be very lucky, very good at marketing yourself, and at the top of the game in terms of mastery.

Wow ! thanks to all you wonderful people, whom shared other passions, alot of diversity, alot of commonality as well.  I've also learned how artist use 3D, how they began, etc.....  Although I cannot reply to every post, I have read every one of em, I'll try to chime in on a few, when I have time.
