If male products don't sell as well as female products, in general, why make the male named 8 figure pro bundle and addons more expensive at release than a comparable female named 8 figure pro bundle and addons?

At a guess, it would be because the male stuff doesn’t sell as well. It’s effectively a specialist interest in this market, and speciialist interest stuff tends to be “price inelastic”. If they price it the same as the female stuff (or cheaper) and it doesn’t sell as well, they make less return on the same level of investment. By pricing it a bit higher (in this case by discount strategy) they can hopefully reap a higher reward than otherwise from those keen few who do buy, and be incentivised to release more male items.

I try not get annoyed at this sort of thing, and just respond in my own best interest. Would I like the stuff now? Will it be much cheaper later on (e.g. when the HD figure is no longer included)?

I have a beef about the offers associated with Floyd 8. (This isn't about the character or the addons. It's about the marketing.)

I'm one of the many customers who have been begging for good quality male products over the past several years, only to be told "male products don't sell very well" as the reasoning behind the dismal ratio of female to male products. I'm happy to say we've seen an uptick in the number of products for the guys since the (renamed to) "It's Not Raining Men" thread first hit the forums, even if the ratio is still very lopsided in favor of the females.

However, today's offer on Lloyd 8 is nowhere near as good as the offer on Mika 8, (and probably other named 8 figures, but I can verify Mika 8 as her sales page is still active at the moment.)

With Mika, you can/could get up to an additional 30% off both Mika 8 and the addons by also purchasing 3 or more addons. With Floyd, you can only get up to an additional 20% off both Floyd 8 and the addons by also purchasing 3 or more addons. With Mika 8, the additional discount breakdown is 10% for one addon, 20% for two addons and 30% for 3 or more addons. With Floyd 8, the additional discount breakdown is 10% for two addons and 20% for 3 or more addons. This makes Floyd 8 one of the most expensive named figures on release for quite some time. Same with the addons.

If male products don't sell as well as female products, in general, why make the male named 8 figure pro bundle and addons more expensive at release than a comparable female named 8 figure pro bundle and addons?

Due to this marketing move, I'll be wishlisting the Floyd pro bundle and the various addons I like, and wait for them to go on sale later in the year. Or next year. Whenever.

yeh I noticed that too. I hope it isn't a new trend. Most of the other G8 Pro bundles gave us 30% off the bundle and add-ons with 3 or more add-ons. On the oher hand I really like the diversity with Floyd8 so I'll probably  be getting it anyway.

Bit of sticker shock on my first pro bundle in a long time without the PC+ discount, but it's impressive that I can either get Floyd 8 Pro Bundle for ~$95 or Floyd Pro Bundle+three addons+three other bundles for ~$105. There's a slight chance the sale will still be around when my next credit card billing period starts, so I might get Floyd 8 and friends then.

FWIW, I found the Floyd sale to be a far better deal than the Mika sale. If you go "all in"  on Floyd, you can get 4 add ons (including HD add on) and 4 pro bundles for around $62. That works out to $15.50 per pro bundle, with the add ons tossed in for "free". The Mika sale didn't include any pro bundles.

Getting a 3-month PC+ would really "pay for itself" here.

I'm experimenting to see if the higher prices without PC+ and the lack of coupons will be more of a deterrent to my spending :)

I intentionally didn't mention the free products when comparing the discounts. What products and how many are offered for free will affect customers' buying decisions differently depending on a lot of factors. For anyone new to the hobby, the free products are a great deal. For those of us who have been buying Pro bundles for years, this particular group of products is less incentive to "buy now."

If I were to buy Floyd now, I would manage to find 3 free products to put in my cart. However, the retail price of my three items wouldn't come close to the retail price of three pro bundles, so the perceived value of the offer is far less for me than it is for you. When it comes to these sort of offers, the perception of value will vary from one customer to another. In the Mika 8 offer, for example, I had a really hard time finding 10 items I wanted in the 28 I didn't already own. The additional free products are nice, but for me, the bottom line is about the total price of the offer.

With all the offers I qualified for with Mika 8, (including PC member and "orange" banner discounts,) the pro bundle was $37 and change. With Floyd 8, the best I can do on the pro bundle is $42.32. (The discounts as reported by Daz Deals are 73% and 69% respectively.) As for the addons, the discount for buying three Mika 8 addons is 66% for DOs and 51% for PA items, while the discount for Floyd 8 addons is only 61% for DOs and 44% for PA items.

I've attached two cart screenshots, one for Mika and one for Floyd, the selected addons are almost the same price for both carts. The Floyd cart has a retail price exactly $1 less than the cart for Mika, yet the cost for the Mika 8 cart is $9+ less than the cost for the Floyd 8 cart. And as I don't actually want everything in the pro bundle, the higher cost is definitely a deterrent to buying now instead of later, especially as I'm on a tight budget from here on out. I'm just not willing to spend that extra $9. (More actually, because the products in the cart were picked to match as close as possible the prices of my actual cart for Mika 8.)

I am not alone. We'll never know how many people pass on buying Floyd 8 now because of the less attractive offer, but I think it's safe to say sales of the Floyd 8 pro bundle and addons will not be as high as they could had the discounts matched those of Mika 8.

    Easy choice for me:

    Ollie 8 with four addons = $ 52.-

Floyd with three (less useful) addons = $ 72.-

Guess which one I bought and which goes to the "whenever it's cheap enough" list... wink

+1 and no kidding. Out of all those bundles, finding 3 free bundles (because I got three Add-ons) where there were at least two things in a bundle that I didn't already own- well, there weren't three.  Offering Pro Bundles was zero incentive.

I'm very happy with the free bundles I got- Lee 7 Pro, Lovable Nerds and Out to Dinner. I love Floyd and enjoyed the choices provided for free bundles.

For me on the other hand, there wasn't enough "bang for the buck" in those free bundles. I don't really need any G7M figures, so it was all about the other stuff in the pro packs or other bundles, like hair, clothes and poses, although I would have had to transfer them to G8M.
I don't do fantasy much... so fantasy clothes and poses won't tempt me.. I also don't do much SciFi... In the end, I was thinking about three bundles, with a total of 8 different things that interested me.
And considering that Floayd with three addons would have cost me ~ $ 72.- it just wasn't enough to make me open my wallet that far...

I said this over in the Floyd thread, but I'm also seeing the same type of comments here. The whole "Floyd looks great, but I don't like the price of the pro bundle so I'm passing on Floyd".

I don't get that. If you like the figure, just buy the figure. The Pro bundle will eventually be on sale (and eventually still probably be free with another pro bundle purchase way down the road).

So if you like the figure, just buy the figure. You don't have to buy the entire bundle just to have the figure. I don't get the whole "I like the figure but don't like the price of the pro bundle so I'm not getting the figure" mentality when there's nothing stopping you from just buying the figure. The figure isn't suddenly worthless if it's not bought with an entire pro bundle (of which half the items many of the people don't want anyway).

I'm just baffled by the "all or nothing" mentality.

  • LlynaraLlynara Posts: 4,772

For what it's worth, Mika 8 is still on sale tonight. I am not sure if this is the last day but wouldn't be surprised. I ended up picking her up too after seeing some renders by a friend.

I can only speak for myself, but…

It's not so much "all or nothing" as how much "bang for the buck." If I buy the products individually, the cost in the long run will be much higher than if I just wait. It's not like I can't make do with what I have. A bit of Ollie mixed in with one of the many other male characters I have will do nicely in the meantime.

I have over 7200 items installed via DIM. I know a significant number of those are one product with multiple files, but the fact still remains, I can do a lot of "making do" without ever purchasing another product from Daz, or anywhere else.

So if Daz wants me to open my wallet for the Pro bundles, the discounts had better be as good for males as they are for the females, or I'll stop buying the new release Pro bundles altogether.

Good points... I haven't clicked "Checkout" yet. It is frustrating when the male products are more. I really just don't get that logic. Are they pricing it on rarity? I'll probably spring for Floyd, as I really do like him and I want to support male products. But I'm going to hold off for a bit, thinking...

In defense of Floyd, Daz and the PA'S, I feel it is a steal, and if the offering was any cheaper the artists would be starving more than they may be and God forbid they find a job that pays more. The value is obvious for those who value the product. Our eyes differ. But value doesn't.

Well, I'll get Floyd Pro Bundle for sure but might wait if a Gift Card deal comes along within the promo period first.

Regarding the three free bundles and the 20% for Gen8-supporters I still feel that DAZ should weigh in previous purchases better. I just find not many Bundles I can still pick. All I see are Starter Bundles where I already have the Pro Ones. More current bundles are not included (which I could use) and even with old Gen2 or M/V4-bundles I already have lots of the Bundles content already.

Oh yes and I still hope that the store will finally be able to hide Starter Bundles or Bundles consisting only of products already owned at some day.

I still had three Pro Bundles I wanted (Ivan 7, Kenji 7 and Guy 7) so for me getting Floyd (who also adds a lot to the gene pool. Though I still regret not getting Edward. If I'd known he was coming, I wouldn't have gotten Alexandra so I'd have enough to get him.) was a no-brainer. Plus... I was very excited when I saw the Troll HD from @Josh Crockett. I am curious to see how he blends with other figures, so I'll be playing with him soon!

It's like Daz sat down and read all these complaints about pricing and just blitzed all our wallets.

The sales have been awesome and now 1/2 off PC membership.

The prices seem to have stabilized and the content is much broader.

Only in a few places are the bundles missing.

It might be a bit of a stretch but I could see some combos for today's offerings.

The rocket launcher and the trenches to do some kind of military theme, but the boots are kinda off-time and the launcher wasn't used at Normandy. lol
