Getting priced out of this hobby

Also computer HW needs t improve so that a completed high quality render of a finished scene never takes longer than 10 minutes.

That's a dog chasing its tail! If/when we achieve a 10 minute render, we'll just make our scenes more complex/detailed until the hardware needs to catch up again.

Exactly. As people went from 5.6k modems to todays high speeds, websites became more and more complex because they could. 3D rendering will follow the same path.

I still smoke but it is more like $2000 a year.  I did give up the java monsters I love so much in favor of an 85 cent fountain drink (FullThrottle).  My monster savings have to go back into the household I'm afraid.  But perhaps I'll get a cookie if I am good.  My husband snuck in here yesterday and was reading this thread.  He knows it can be an expensive hobby and he cut my budget to $600 this year over the Pomeranian I bought.  My mom has slipped me cash so I have spent more than that.  My dad owns 33% of the family business with my husband and another partner.  My husband does most of the work while getting 33% of the profits plus salery.  The other guy is over-paid no more than he actually bothers to do and be at work.  My sisters have to ask for money all the time.  So my mom slips me tokens of her esteem even though I really shouldn't need, need, need them.  My husband understands this is an expensive hobby now and that $600 for the year was a little bit mean. $1,200 starting in October plus mom money will be better. I do need to take him to lunch on Mom money occassionally since he is kinda why mom has Mom money.

I smoke about a pack a day and it costs me about $500 a year.
Of course, I have a small machine that fills empty tubes with raw tobacco.
And I have some tobacco plants in my garden this year, even though
stripping out the veins is a pain.
Will bring the cost down to $.30 per pack, $100 a year.

I've been "lucky", if that's the right word -- the last character that appealed to me was Ollie 8.  Other than that, it's been rifling through the new products, sighing, and moving on.

It will be a week tomorrow since I knocked a 38 year smoking habit on the head. There may be more Daz/3D in my life as a result of this, if only I can resist the current urge to chew through the keyboard.

Stick with it.   Was quite a bit  longer habit for me and it's over 18 months now since I sparked up a ciggy

the animation I just rendered using Octane, OK shader are bad but the fact I actually could do it scares me

so far I have resisted buying later stuff

How long did that one take to render?

about 3 hours 1100 frames for DS thats actually very good

About 10 seconds per frame - that's very fast. Wonder how long it would take with Iray.

Stay strong.  When you get to the point where you gag when walking into a smoke filled room, you've almost licked it.  indecision--14 years smoke free yes

When it feels bad, remind yourself that it is because your body is removing the rubbish and becoming healthy and free, then choose to feel good about that. Take deep breaths and if you have the time and energy, go for walks somewhere nice.  I quit five years ago and have never looked back.

I quit on St Patrick's Day 2010. That sounds like a date I planned but I didn't. On my previous attempt to quit by setting a date & quitting and all that, I found reading the Allen Carr book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" was most effective. This time, I just didn't want to smoke anymore as they weren't enjoyable. In hindsight, it doesn't even take too much evaluation to realize cigarettes were never enjoyable but I simply got addicted to them once biological symptoms starting confusing my hunger and thirst pangs as pangs for nicotine.LOL, if is true after the cigarette is finished for that 1st ten minutes as my body's strangulation from the nicotine and smoke and gets that small 'oxygen' high from being able to fully breathe again that feels good but I think running wind sprints on a running track is a more sensible way to get that oxygen high.

...yep and this year I finally got a 2% increase in my SS benefit (after two years of none) which is 0.1% short of the consumer price increase.

Hope my rent doesn't go up this year.

exactly .. and my wife was working full time but now down to 3 days a week, so income cut big. really not much extra cash . its choose wisely. The prices here have gone up though..in the PC+ and regular pricing. laugh back to op ... and thus double whammy. very slective purchasing, and much much less.

That statement was deja vu all over again.

And the key part in that article is this "We're in business to make money"

I get a .65 an hour raise next month, so hopefully that will helps with costs. Every little bit does

Well, I finally made a purchase after two months of inactivity.
    MaClean's Everyday Groceries 2.
I also purchased their Fresh Fruits, which I had somehow missed.
Ended my streak of not buying by continuing my streak of owning everything that MaClean has created.
Not only are the products useful for nearly every render, they're great for kitbashing.
It helps that MaClean is one of the nicest people on this website.
Makes it easier to purchase from them.

    ...have to do that today.

  • I have decided to drop the Platinum Membership as well... The items being offered for "free" are mostly textures for dresses or other things that I have no use for.   I can't use the coupons for much I want so it will be an easy way to say money.   I did buy a new character at another site today that was on sale and I did not have to play marketing games to get the discount.....

Hasn't Cabs 'n' Cops always been like $4 or $5?  I have had it on my wishlist forever waiting for it to get to $1.99 but today it is $12.95 but 40% off if I buy a Flirty new release?  I know I dropped my PC+ membership, so would one of you with PC+ still tell me if the price is still like 5 bucks or did they raise the price so they could give the 40% discount?  Thanks!

It has been 2.99 since Jan 30th of this year, when I assume it first became a PC+ item (earlier is was either DO or PA).

The free items that are mostly textures are free for everyone, and has nothing to do with membership of the PC+ club.

The PC+ freebies are weekly and monthly. The weekly ones are so-so (often weapons or the like), but the monthly freebie is often pretty good. You also get a bunch of additional freebies during the PC+ sale in October.

...yeah I only check the regular freebies once in a while as most of the textures are for clothing content I don't have or don't intend to purchase.

All that means is that you own the PC+ freebies shown on that page, which does not for some reason even show all the current freebies. Only Two. This month's freebies have been: Couch Potato Props, Spear Set, Scifi Prison Cell and The Subterranean Pool. And we're still due one more weekly freebie this month. So, not a bad haul for $8 a month IMO.

At any given time only two items will show up as free to PC+ members, the current monthly and the current weekly. The weekly one stops being free the minute the new one appears (normally on a Wednesday).

When I first got started, I passed up some of the club freebies as I couldn't imagine anything I could use them for. Now I wish I hadn't passed them up. I find myself using products, or parts of products, I never thought I'd use. (Like the extreme makeup from Vanity I used in my latest two renders!) One just never knows where creativity will take us…!

Well, there's always the PC+ "Use a Freebie for a Render" competition..

And for me as a newbie, the Freebies are a great help. Especially, as some are nice to tinker around a bit.

...really like the new Floyd8 figure as he looks like someone you'd see in everyday life instead of an idealised fantasy hunk, and would work very well for several characters in my storylines.

However just to use the base figure (no bundle) will cost about 44$ (Figure + Head Morphs + Body Morphs) even with the PC+ DO coupon (which would knock 6$ off one of the morph add-ons, otherwise it would be almost 50$).  That is about what my monthly power bill comes to.  Then there's clothing and hair.

For the Pro bundle that would be a total of 87$ (including 22$ for the basic morphs).

Yeah, need a little more than an annual  2% living cost adjustment to keep up
