G8 characters to G3?

marblemarble Posts: 7,500

I think I know the answer to this but I'll ask anyway, on the off chance. I have Edie 8 HD and the Grandmother HD character for Edie 8 but I have nothing but the basic morphs for G8F. I have a whole suite of morphing add-ons for G3F including most of Zev0's products like Shape Shift, Glute Control and Vacularity, etc. Would there be any way to port a G8 character like Edie 8 to G3F? I'm guessing that even if it were possible to transfer the morphs, it would not be so for the HD (and Edie is HD heavy). I like the Edie characters but I find I'm quite restricted after being used to all the extra dials I have for G3F. I just can't afford to buy yet another suite of Zev0 stuff when I only have Edie and little else for G8.

If you had gotten that earlier Singular Blue set of scripts than that had the right sequence of steps to do the G8 to G3 transfer. So that tells you it is technically possible. Maybe SickleYield has a tutorial?

And you are correct, no HD.

Yeah, thought so but worth asking. I never had a need for the scripts until I bought Edie but when I looked, I gathered that they had been withdrawn. And the HD is what makes Edie so different. Ah well, I'll know not to invest in any more G8 characters now. I've done ok so far by using all the morphing capabilities I have with G3 and Zev0 products. One day there will be an insane sale and Zev0 G8 bundles will appear at insane discounts. Maybe.

Well maybe during the yearly Christmas sells. There have been more products I want during G8 cycle, and I don't mean characters or pro bundles either although I am glad about Sakura 8, Edie 8, and Ollie 8, but like you I've haven' been able to afford them all.

There is a SickleYield morph transfer tutorial that works for this, although I believe she's using an earlier pair of figures for an example, and I don't remember what it's called. I successfully transferred Edward, Ollie, Zackyr, Alexandra, Edith, and another Alexandra based character back to G3, along with the HD morphs using this. The procedure involves loading both figures and *possibly* posing the recipient figure to match the donor, favoriting the morphs you want to transfer (clicking on the heart next to their dials), moving them to the other figure via transfer utility (there's an option to select favorite morphs), and then saving out each of the new dials on the recipient as some kind of support asset (morph asset maybe?)

Like back-transferring G8 clothes to G3 with the scene identification/transfer rigging trick, it's tedious enough to where you wouldn't do it for stuff you didn't care about, but it's not that hard.

That's interesting, thanks. I'm subscribed to SY's YouTube channel so I'll take a look. I've been using her procedure to transfer clothing quite extensively (Edie needs clothes!) and it looks tedious initially but it actually takes only a couple of minutes per item. I am surprised that the HD features are included though.

I'll certainly try it when I have a little time on my hands.

Are you sure you moved the HD morphs? You can certainly transfer morphs marked as HD, but the resulting morph on the target figure will be standard resolution only.

Oh, and just to confirm - G8 skins can be used on G3 characters, right?

They can be applied once you save it as a preset, but not directly. As for how they line up, I didn't check as I don't use them on GF3.

Let me rephrase that: I transferred HD dials and when I spun them they seemed to add the kind of fine detail I would expect them to. They appear to do something even at standard resolution. I didn't realize they were technically impossible to transfer at HD.

I also forgot that I didn't transfer Ollie's body, because the radical shape alteration involved meant that I would have had to master the "adjust rigging to shape" step which I'd never gotten the hang of.

    I apologize for the errors.

The most reliable way I've found of transferring G8 skins to G3 goes like this: apply base skin to G8. Select each individual surface one at time, and save as the kind of shader preset that includes the textures. Apply shader presets to G3, one surface at a time. Save as Material preset. From here, your G3 *should* take any regular makeup/scars/body texture options from the original G8 set (not verified with LIE presets) so save them out as additional Material presets along with any eye color presets you feel strongly about. The skins I've tried were Edward, Alexandra, and the characters from Alexandra Pro Bundle and I didn't notice any issues with seams (doesn't mean that there aren't any just that I didn't see them). Remember, the G8 base characters do not use alternate UVs, and the base G8 UV is supposedly pretty much like the base G3 one.

ETA: I believe the morph transfer was a text and screencapture tutorial from SickleYield's deviantart account, I don't know if she has a youtube version.

Thanks for the update. The texture process is a little more complicated than I imagined but it looks doable. I thought that G8 used G3 UV maps so the skins should be interchangeable. I'm only concerned with Skin (torso, limbs, face, etc.) so teeth, fingernails, eys colour and make-up are not important.
