DAZ Horse 2 Textures only available in the Pro Bundle???

The horse was on sale recently and I bought the Starter bundle, not having the slightest interest in Medieval Fantasy and Wagon Train stuff. It seems I should have read the fine print more carefully, because it turns out the extra textures--palomino, pinto, etc.--are only available in the Pro Bundle. Oh, really? I'd be willing to buy them as an add-on, but they're not available.

I don't want to return the Starter bundle and buy a lot of stuff I neither want or need, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Could DAZ perhaps be induced to offer the additional textures separately? If not, does anyone know of a 3rd-party product?

Thanks in advance!

HiveWire have a Horse availble which comes with one texture set and you can purchase others breeds, textures, tack, and  poses all separetly.

Thanks, scorpio, but the HiveWire horse is pretty expensive (and kind of precious, it seems to me), and my horsey interest is purely casual. I only picked up the (rather clunky) DAZ horse because it was on sale and I figured it might come in handy someday. It's just annoying that if I want some color variation, I have to spring for the Pro bundle.

You could always open a Sales Support ticket and ask about upgrading from what you have to the Pro bundle.

That's probably the only solution, though it seems ridiculous that they're not available as an add-on. Thanks, Richard.

It is, but I pretty much got the feeling that DAZ lost all interest in the Horse 2 about three days after releasing it and have never thought about it again.  Apparently no one could figure out how to make skimpware for a horse. ;/  At one point there were a few people who'd put up UV adapters so that you could use all the textures for the original Mil Horse, but I just checked and none of those seem to be viable anymore...

Personally, I just broke down and bought the Hivewire horse, as there's now a tack convertor to use the Horse 2 tack on that and that's where all the artists who used to support the DAZ horses seem to have gone.

well it does share UV mapping below the neck chest with the Genesis 3 centaurs

so if you could sort of roughly texture the neck and head in photoshop ot Gimp etc on a copy you could use their addons enlightened

I think that came out the same week as this https://www.daz3d.com/idg-iray-essentials-daz-horse-2-and-centaur-7 ; Unfortunately, both require having the textures that only come with Horse 2 and in the Bundles... >-<

Not sure I'm understanding your plight here.  The DAZ Horse 2 comes with some very nice maps, they are not in iRAY but you can easily convert those to iRAY if you want to.

The base DAZ Horse 2 only has three texture sets, I believe (bay, black and grulla according to the ReadMe).
With the Starter Bundle you get another five: buttermilk, fleabitten grey, palomino, smoky grulla and white
     textures.
You need the Pro Bundle to get the final eight: blue roan, buckskin, dapple grey, gypsy vanner, Hancock roan, leopard, mahogany bay or silver grey colours.

So if you have the Starter Bundle you should have a total of eight texture sets, including palomino. If you don't have them, maybe you didn't install the texture installer for the Starter Bundle? (It's in the DIM as a separate file)

No, it doesn't.  If you buy the PRO bundle you get 8 breed shapes and these 8 textures that are exclusive to the Pro Bundle-

    • BlueRoan
    • Buckskin
    • DappleGrey
    • GypsyVanner
    • HancockRoan
    • LeopardAppy
    • MahoganyBay
    • SilverGrey

PLUS the 5 textures you get in the Starter bundle (which only comes with 3 breed shapes)

    • Buttermilk
    • FleabittenGrey
    • Palomino
    • SmokeyGrulla
    • White

Plus the three textures you get if buy just the Horse 2 (which comes with NO breed shapes)

    • Bay
    • Black
    • Grulla

And, as the original poster noted, there's no way to go back retroactively to get the other textures/shapes except to buy everything in the pro bundle again.  It was a stupid marketing idea and, in retrospect, it probably badly sabotaged the launch of the Horse 2 by forcing the serious horse fans to either have to buy an extremely pricy bundle or to just continue to use the original DAZ Horse until another option came along.

What he's saying is that some of the Daz Horse 2 breeds (both textures and morphs) are only available to the buyers of the pro bundle, without any upgrade option--which can be a nasty surprise for a casual buyer who wasn't that interested in the products in the bundle.

I was speaking about the main texture set that comes with the horse.  Not the breed's and the maps that one expects.  The Hive worked it out so Harry's aditional breed shapes were sold WITH the proper breed maps as a reasonable price. Sorry for not understanding your issue..

I'm pretty sure the Iray product doesn't require the Pro Bundle unless you want those specific maps. It still adds bump/normal and Iray settings to your Daz Horse 2 and converts whatever you have.

I'm not sure about the Centaur, but I suspect similarly.

That might not be satisfying, but it's a response to the 'nobody is doing anything with horse nowadays'

It is not just the horse, pretty much any animal doesn't get much love these days. There are a lot of animals in the store, many of them DAZ Originals, but the vast majority are very old (10+ years). There is only one PA doing animals (I am not counting monsters) and he is only really interested in Australian wild life, so if you want "normal" animals you have to use the old stuff, and try and make them look better with improved shaders etc.

On topic, it was pretty wierd that the extra textures and shapes of the horse where part of the bundles rather than as separate products. This is actually very rare amoungst the many bundles available here, whom. in the vast majority of cases, include the products inside them and nothing more (with the anatomical elements in most pro bundles being the main exception to this rule).

I bought the iray add on not realizing most of it needed the textures that only come in the pro bundle. ( My own fault for not reading more carefully) I own everything in the pro bundle except for two items.  Even at 80% off the pro bundle today IF I buy a new item it comes out to over $10 for each for those two items, neither of which I need.  There is no option to buy those textures separately, or any options to upgrade to the pro bundle at a reasonable price, so I paid for textures I will never be able to use.  I use the Hivewire horse almost exlusively now because I can get textures for it at a very reasonable price.  $4.95 I think was what I paid for the last set of multiple textures.

And I should add that I bought that add on package specifically for some of the coats that I cannot use.

was a couple years ago, i asked for a store credit refund on the horse 2,
explained i wanted to buy the pro bundle because of the skins. they gave it to me.

I THINK I tracked down the MilHorse -> Daz Horse 2 uv thingie and grabbed some zebra stuff. Don't recall how well it worked... maybe I'll poke at it again with the iray product

Speaking of the Horse 2, wasn't there a solution posted somewhere for the weird cutoff mane that stops short several inches behind the ears? Never really understood how it got released that way.

  • UthgardUthgard Posts: 878

Speaking of which, I would more than likely buy updated manes and tails for the horse. The original ones are not up to modern standards and they shouldn't be harder to make than a hairstyle for a genesis figure.

are there tutorials on how to face rig horse lips?

    horse nose needs whiskies

  • The Hivewire horse is way better than the Daz Horse 2. Lot's of different breeds and textures available, plus poses..and expressions . There's also a toon horse and unicorn. May be a bit expensivem but well worth saving up your cents. Also..although not yet available (WIPs)..the base horse figure is morphable into LOTS of different animals..bull, deer, dragons and even more

  • DaWaterRatDaWaterRat Posts: 2,885

Yeah, I haven't invested in the Hivewire horse as much as I want, but if all you need is a basic horse, then Hivewire horse plus one of CWRW's texture packs should be more than sufficient, and you can add breeds as finances permit.  (Don't worry about having the "proper" breed morphs.  Most horse breeds can have most colorations, there are only a few colorations - such paints (mustang) or appalossas) that are breed specific.)

As much as I like the HW horse, I love the old Milhorse path that allowed for more breeds and textures in one pack. With something like a horse or dog or cat, it can be very cost prohibitive when you only use a single breed only a few times and need another only to find it costing quite a bit more than expected. It's why I have never really bought into any of the HW animals or the ones from AM here at DAZ.

I guess if you plane to do a ton of renders with a single breed then it's worth it.

There is an addon freebie (don't have a link) that allows for a remap of the Horse 2 to take the old Milhorse textures and with the addon packs for it, you get some nice displacement and bump maps also. I created a normal map out of it and the set works fairly well in Iray with no conversion

    The Daz Horse 2 has unicorn options https://www.daz3d.com/sf-unicorn-for-daz-horse-2 , https://www.daz3d.com/da-unicorn-for-daz-horse-2 , not to mention llamas https://www.daz3d.com/loveable-llamas and a deer https://www.daz3d.com/tane-the-old-deer-for-daz-horse-2 . There's even a toon option https://www.daz3d.com/the-toy-pony

If you have the base Daz Horse 2 or the Starter bundle and want the extra breeds, please open a Sales Support ticket - I can't pronmise anything but they may be able to offer an upgrade deal.

Daz Horse 2 has a LOT of options, including toon animals, deer, llamas, and a bunch of weirder options.

And the nice thing about that Milhorse<>Horse 2 freebie is that it lets you do map transfers; I’m currently poking at migrating the bump and normal maps from the Iray pack to MilHorse 2 so I can apply them to Zebra.

(milhorse zebra has a mane that hasn’t been replicated for horse 2; I could probably make a zebra mane fibermesh if I was hugely motivated but I’m not)

Unfortunately neither of the old Mil Horse to DHH2 freebies still seem to be available as the sites that hosted them are gone, so unless someone has a working link that's not an easy option for new folks.  The mane fixes are still up there, though, as are SnowSultan's seam guides.
